NRL Round 1 - Knights Vs Cowboys - 1:15pm Sunday 1st March (AEDT) - Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

I also think it’s heading towards Brown and Sharpe halves with Smith 14
It definitely could work with Friz coming off after 20 mins moving Crossland to lock and Smith to hooker having all our attacking players on at once
Also Sharpe does need to play 80 mins with how good he is and it can’t be wing as we need Young and Marzhew metres

Why does everyone think Crossland is going to lock? I think Holbrook prefers a bigger body there based on what we've seen so far

But it lines up with the rest of the stupidity in that he spent all pre-season and the trial not playing there.

The new bench numbers will let coaches play a lot of games with selections.
It's not impossible that 18 and 19 on the teamsheet could be our starting halves and 6 and 7 could sit out the entire game without even bothering to warm up.

Could've done that with the old rules, too. Don't know what purpose it would ever serve but it was possible.

Where does not bringing either of the backup hookers align with the potential halves debate? Are we planning on Crossland playing 80 and keeping our fingers crossed? Is Tom Cant legitimately going to be the backup hooker? Is Smith switching positions mid game after starting at half, or coming off the bench as the backup hooker to begin with? Those are the only three options I can really see from the players going over there.

Hooker is easy. When phoenix needs a rest Tom Cant can play 9. He can cant he? We saw Cant there in trials and in store he got resigned because of his hooking, try scoring and goal kicking versatility.

Of course Tom Cant can, can't he?

Sorry everyone......

I think it’s likely it’s Brown and Smith.

I just don’t understand what Sharpe’s role will be.

I can’t get my head around why he’s trained at fullback if Ponga is gonna be good to go, and not in the position we have planned.

Unless that’s 14 and he’s just gonna follow the ball around.

But surely he’d get some reps at wing or centre if that was the plan. I know we don’t see all training sessions, but I reckon it would’ve leaked out by now.

Also seems unlikely Smith will be filling in at 9.

Agree with the sentiment that surely this isn’t us keeping cards close to our chest. I can’t see too many teams taking notes on what last years wooden spooners are planning? Sure, it may help us catch cowboys off guard, but then what?

Hoping this post comes back to bite me and serves as a great “this is why I’m not an NRL coach”, but I’m not really sure what we are playing at here.

Your mail Sandon in the halves, Sharpe at centre. Strong mail?
The impression I got was that he was just drawing the conclusion from Holbrook never ruling out that Sharpe would play centre, only wing. See I was listening lol.

If he has mail, that means we have competing mail - one person has heard we’re vilely crowbarring Sharpe in in the halves, one person what we’re gently caressing Sharpe into a perfect spot for him at centre. May the best mail win.

Exactly what I was saying.

I'll just sit back and see what does happen! Comment from there.

Correct... but, the mail I got doesn't get much better either lol.

Seeing is believing.

So far, Smith has been the halfback and dominant playmaker, at training and during the firsr trial. Second trial, Brown was given the reigns. Does that mean Brown will be playing on the right as the dominant playmaker come round 1? Who knows, but I don't reckon it's all that likely.

If Holbrook had Brown and Ponga available for both trial matches its likely that we don't see the same tactical set up we saw in the 2nd trial which seemed to accommodate the fact that Brown in particular needed to prove a few working theories before round 1

They could have, but now they have to sit 2 guys out, which lets them throw in at least 1 red herring if they want. I expect coaches like Ricky will do that a lot.
I don't know if Holbrook will, but it does feel like he plays games.

I hope you’re right mate, I think Fletch will brain it at centre and it’s the kind of thing which IMO instantly placates any of the “what if he gets antsy and asks for a release” chat. Taking a guy who wants to play 6 or 1, when you have a better/established 6/1 already, and chucking them in at centre, why that’s as Australian as a meat pie. A time honoured tradition. Guys don’t want to play on the wing but they seem to find it very cool to play centre.

Article that says the boys will get a few days off in Vegas to get over jet lag and check the place out before getting down to training.
Says the drinking age is 21 so Hopwood, Hunt and McEwen are all too young to drink.
Says the club has hired a security firm to keep them out of trouble.

Hundreds of thousands $$$ between an elite centre and elite winger. Maybe why it’s cooler lol 🤷‍♀️

If it's true that selections are a shambles, I get why people are concerned, especially after 6 years of AOB.

I still think he's trying to sort a mess, and it's too early to be writing anyone off, coaches or players.

But I get the concern, one thing is for sure in the NRL, without some level of success, head coaches who get a third chance are rarer than hen's teeth.
