NRL General Recruitment and Retention

What they need to do is fire Gus into the Sun before it's too late.
He was the architect of penriths success, in setting up their junior system. Why he saw that finally come to fruit and then decide he’d do the opposite at the bulldogs i don’t know.
Everyone talks about how they need to go out and buy more players to fix the players they’ve gone out and bought.
Failure in every way

I'll rephrase it, Bulldogs don't need another running half, they need an organising 7.
Burton had his best games at 6 next to Sexton.

I'm not defending the Bulldogs' recruitment policy (quite the opposite), merely pointing out they're trying to buy a halfback when they could have kept Sexton.

What they need to do is fire Gus into the Sun before it's too late.

Geez, I hope not. Gus constantly meddling in the team, Ciraldo constantly grumpy about refs and players and Dogs fans sad- it's the best.

IDK of too many architects of success who had to be moved on following a "Me or him" ultimatum from the coach to the board before the team went on a 4-premiership run.

PS. From memory, the Panthers had been improving under Cleary, but he was sacked by Gould in a year that they had an injury crisis as bad as or probably worse than, our first spoon year, when we started the season with the majority of our best 13 dealing with long-term injuries.

He was the one who set their whole juniors system. To say he had no hand in that because he was ousted before the premierships came in is unfair.
The whole reason for their success has been their juniors and system. Gus had a fair hand in that.

Gus is great at setting up the the club pathways systems for the juniors. He should stop there

For me he gets most the credit for Penrith’s success of their juniors systems and pathways

He also spent a year at the Warriors before the dogs and I’d say he has a lot to do with setting up their junior systems and pathways. Which is partly why they have so much depth currently. There has always been a lot of talent in New Zealand, but before Gus was there, they couldn’t keep most of it.

Gould’s problem, in my opinion is that he constantly tinkers and meddles with the first grade side, undermines the coach.

If he wants to be the coach, then be the coach

Maybe true, but you know they've had one of the largest junior areas for decades, so how hard was that really?

I didn't say he had no hand; I pointed out, though, that he was the problem the club had to solve to move on.

The reason for their success is not just the juniors, although they were a significant part, when you consider that the majority of the team during their most successful period and the coach have remained static. The Panthers haven't won a premiership since Fish left.

This idea that Gus did the impossible in improving the pathways in the biggest junior development region in the country, and that it was really set and forget for the Panthers once he set up the juniors is way overblown.

Could argue the warriors juniors coming through now is largely down to Peter O Sullivan, his on the record saying the way he operates is to handle all recruitment on his own right through pathways. He only left there 4 years ago.

Yeah, he did, but when they were based in NSW due to the pandemic, he was in an advisory role. It's not like he relocated to NZ and set them up.

He also did a review of the Dragons, and that went nowhere... although, to his credit, he did try to stop them hiring Hook from memory. But you know that was after sacking Cleary to sign Hook for the Panthers in 2015, and we all know how that went.

Bulldogs are still going through the player turnover that Penrith did in those early years. Even Penrith made the finals a few years in to #5yearplan but Gus already knew it wasn't the finish line, similar as he knows the job isn't done at the Bulldogs. The guys that were there before were similar to the Soward's and Maloney's that do the job, and maybe mentor the young halves but you know they're not the future.

Oh definitely POS deserves a lot of the credit for identifying and signing the junior talent.

I just think Gus helped in setting up or at least pointing the Warriors in the right direction for setting their pathways up. Obviously he wasn't there long, so someone at the Warriors has taken notes from Gus.

Gus seems to know what to do to set up clubs with good/big junior nurseries

You don’t want Gus near your first grade side is what I’m basically saying

Yes you’re right, but he has been to New Zealand and he’d have some idea of what they were doing pathways wise. I assume he would have given them some ideas on what they should do and what might work.

He wouldn’t need to be in New Zealand to do that

That’s true, but how much of the Dragons struggling is due to them being a bit of a basket case and not listening to advice or what is recommended to them.

Don't have to be in NZ to set up pathways in NZ? Really?

IDK, it sounds to me like Trump...Gould's successes are way overblown, and his many failures are brushed aside. Personally still think the best thing for anti-Dogs fans is for him to keep doing what he's doing.

It probably has a lot to do with his ego
