NRL General Recruitment and Retention

Apparently, PNG want Munster to be 7 if they can't get Cleary, who they can talk to Nov 1 (according to Kent). IDK if they get Cleary, but if they do, they probably get one or two other Panthers. Yeo, To'o and I think Martin are all off contract.

I think it's funny because PNG will struggle to hold players; they won't have any depth. Chammiss is doing a good job of getting ahead of the recruiting and has more money to splash than the Bears, but honestly IDC who they buy over the grind of an NRL season(s) when Origin and injuries bite; they're going to struggle.

Look at the Phins, who had a successful QLD club underneath; they still haven't played finals. They probably will this year finally, but they've also conceded 50... twice.
 
Anyone can do a good job when they get 'special permission' to negotiate with washed up rejects from other teams lol well ahead of time. Bears nor Dolphins never had that privelege. Spending close to $5m on 5 players isn't ideal cap management.
Storm are probably doing Munster a favour if he is on the slide

No protocols were breached; it appears the request to talk to PNG came from Munster, and the Storm were only too happy to oblige. The Storm are looking after their future as it's likely they can't offer this club legend big dollars post-27, and Munster, realising those dollars have gone, is exploring his options. Everyone wins: the Storm move on, PNG maybe payovers but get leadership and experience, and Munster banks a few more quid towards retirement.

Anyhoo...it appears Brails has signed for two years with the Tigers. According to the article on Zero Tackle (for what that's worth), he's leaving the Raiders because he's behind Pattie and Starling, but he'll still be behind Api at the Tigers, so maybe hoping for a regular spot on the bench. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, if even half the reports about Benji's coaching this year are true, I wish him luck; he's going to need it.
 
Kent was suggesting the Bears could be the first team to concede 100 in an NRL game and that they only have 4 current NRL first graders. I might have agreed a few months ago.

But I think with the signing of Smithies it's more like 8-10 current first graders, with a few like Puru, Sexton and Cole NRL quality.

I can imagine the road trip to Perth is going to be a b******.

Given where they were, they actually might not be entirely awful. I rate them a chance to win a few games, especially in Perth and maybe even avoid the spoon.

Of course, long-term their development, recruitment and retention is going to be where the real success or failure lies...like most clubs that don't have a salary sombrero.

Yes. Am I right in hearing the NRL have control of the draw again. Also the Bears have an established reserve grade team that they can draw players from?
 
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that:

The Perth Bears will have a top-30 squad as required for all NRL teams under the CBA with the players.

I believe the North Sydney Bears will run standalone in the NSW Cup and provide a pathway for players to the NRL through the Perth Bears.

The Perth Bears have also signed an affiliation deal with the Brisbane Tigers in the QCup. So I'm assuming that fit Perth players not required for the top 20 squad each week will feature for the Tigers.

Edit: Actually, it might be the other way around reading this media release...the QCup Tigers will be for Western Australian prospects, whilst North Sydney will field leftover top 30 players not required for NRL duties each week.

The Perth Bears have officially announced a landmark affiliation partnership with the Brisbane Tigers ahead of their entry into the 2027 NRL season.

If i was perth bears I'd be flying my recruitment team out to the top rugby schools in south africa and doing exactly what the roosters do. Heaps of saffas in perth. Only an overnight flight and few hours time difference. Poor country and loads of good athletes.
 
Perth has a lot of NRL fans.
Lot's of miners from Qld and NSW have moved to Perth over the years
They have juniors too.

Knights had a firstgrade regular who started playing for South Perth Lions and Knights scouted him playing for WA juniors.
