NFL Thread

Not much to talk about this week haha.

lol ...... The only thing making news in the NFL is helmet to helmet contacted ............. what is a major over reaction by the NFL, what may lead to the retirement of Pro Bowl linebacker for Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison after he copped a $75k fine for helmet to helmet contact to Browns WR Josh Cribbs & Mohamed Massaquoi .......

But really get used not much to talk about in the NFL to after the divisional championship series/world series finishes over the next couple of weeks in MLB .......

Harrison's not gonna retire. Said he's not gonna let the NFL force him out of playing a game he loves because of a few stupid rule changes, not to mention he doesn't wanna let down his family, teammates, and all of Steeler Nation. Kudos to James Harrison. I hope he wreaks havoc the rest of the season. Now onto the bigger issue...

Goodell is an absolute fool and is making a mockery out of the NFL. He's pussifying the game and is turning it into the National Flag League. They may aswell change the lyrics to the Monday Night Football theme song and make it "are you ready for some two handed touch football?!?!"

The only cheap/dirty/illegal hit on the weekend was the one by Merriweather on Heap. He launched himself helmet first at Heap, a defenseless reciever, and IMO was clearly head hunting. He got fined $50k for that. The Robinson hit on Jackson was fine. That was a great, legal hit. He also got fined $50k. Harrison's hit on Cribbs was fine and was ruled legal. His other hit on Massaquoi though was ruled illegal, which is absolutely ridiculous. I guess you're not allowed to jack players up anymore. What's even more ridiculous is the fact he got fined the most, $75k. WTF is the league doing? There's no consistency there what so ever.

If you can't hit a reciever like that anymore whose going across the middle of the field, then they may aswell ban contact in the NFL all together and just call it soccer. It's a joke. What's next? Hamstring injuries are up... Goodell's gonna start suspending players for running too fast. Wouldn't surprise me.

He's a hypocrite aswell. Harrison gets made an example of and gets fined $75k for, supposably, an illegal hit, yet the NFL is selling photos of that exact same hit on Massaquoi ranging anywhere from $15.95 to $249.95. Are you fuking serious?

As for the illegal and "devastating hits", from a very young age, defenders are taught to aim for the chest and drive up into the facemask, which has always been a legal hit, yet after one weekend of a couple of big hits and concussions, that's all of a sudden an illegal hit now and you can get suspended for it. Dirty hits and blatant helmet to helmet hits I can understand, I'm all for player safety too, as I'm sure every fan is, yet when they come out and say "devastating hits" will also be under review now, they're basically eliminating big hits from the game all together, which is gonna hinder those physical, intimidating defences like the Steelers, Ravens, and Jets, arguably 3 of the top 5 teams in the league atm. What a joke! What are they expecting the players to do now? You know what they're gonna do? They're gonna start aiming low and diving at players hips, knees, and ankles, which is worse IMO. Aiming high and going for the chest is the way to do it, because diving full speed at a players hips, knees, or ankles is gonna start ending careers. There's gonna be players getting flipped up and landing on their necks due to players grass cutting them and diving extremely low, and there's also gonna be a major increase in knee injuries and blown out knees, which IMO is the biggest reason why these new rule changes are a massive mistake. With how fast the game is these days, diving helmet first at a players hip is going to cause a few hip replacements too. Not to mention that a defender diving low at a players knees or hips is gonna give him a higher chance of concussion. Compare helmets bouncing off of a players chest where there's padding and leeway as oppose to a defenders helmet bouncing off of knees and hips, pure bone that's just not gonna give. There's gonna be concussions to defenders because they're wreckless. With the helmet and all that padding on, they think they're invinsible at times and just can't get injured. They're mot gonna think twice about doing it, because in the rule book, it's legal. Asked what the NFL think's about defenders diving low and taking out knees, one spokesperson said it's a non-issue for them, because concussions are life altering and blown out knees are only career altering. WTF? I'm sure RB's and WR's are gonna be feeling good about that.

Goodell's a douchebag. He says he's all about player safety and blah blah blah, yet he's pushing to extend the season to 18 games. Can this guy be anymore of a fraud?

Would be weak as if Harrison retired over that.

Whilst I do agree that Goodell is a ****er for the most part, I do have to disagree on most of the other stuff you have said.

Whilst I'm all for big hits and all that since I prefer defense anyhow and spent quite a number of years watching Rodney Harrison jacking people up like crazy, concussions not only affect players short term it affects them long term with things like migraines and all that.

I don't necessarily think it's a great idea or anything and it probably wont be enforced all that great, however I think if enforced consistently fair and right I'm all for it.

I can understand why Harrison was contemplating retirement, or at least said he was anyway when his emotions were getting the better of him. He makes a great, completely legal hit with his shoulder, not helmet to helmet or to the head of Massaquoi, and gets fined $75k for it and is being portrayed as a thug and a dirty player. Then there's Merriweather, who launches himself helmet first at a defenseless reciever, a prime example of a dirty, head hunting hit, and only receives a $50k fine for it. Harrison's whole thing was he didn't know if he could continue to play within the leagues rules if big, punishing hits, clean or not, were completely eliminated from the game, as that's the way he's been playing since he was 10 years old. I also think the league making an example out of him pi$$ed him off too, and the fact that they were selling photos of that exact hit and trying to make some money out of it probably didn't help either.

As I said, I'm all for player safety, which I'm sure 99% of the fans and players are too, but to try and eliminate "devastating hits" from the game, helmet to helmet or not, is an absolute joke. If you go high and hit the guy in the chest with your shoulder, there's still a chance you may get suspended for it. That's ridiculous. As Harrison said, if I'm an offensive player and you're going to hit me from the side, hit me high and knock me silly, don't dive at my knees and end my career. That's what a cheap shot is.

Thing is, I think Goodell is making the NFL less physical and more of an offense orientated game then it already is, and I highly doubt they'll be able to police this issue properly and be consistent and fair with their fines and suspensions.

NFL is taking the wrong stance by cracking down on violent hits & the league could be stripped of its identity..........
Players on the "D" side of the ball are taught in pop warner to dive in & hurt the receiver so they can not make the play & told never to do a arms tackle what coaches hate with a passion...... There is a chance this will lead to career ending injuries if the NFL makes a hard line stance on this issue, With the Knee's being the target area for most players if they loss match payment plus get fined to boot as well for violent hits .....
The NFL's VP of Football Operations Ray Anderson should take a look into the NFC championship game last season when Brett Farve was hit with the worst illegal hits for a long time, plus they didn't even draw a nice yellow flag....
Anderson has stated most of this week that the tackle by Massaquoi will lead to a fine & suspension from week 7 on ......
Love the timing Ironically, in the same week that the NFL made it a mandate to crack down on helmet-to-helmet blows, Rutgers’ Eric LeGrand was seriously injured making a special teams tackle against Army :boohoo:

Panning out to be an interesting this year. All the teams I think look most likely of winning it are in the AFC. The Steelers, Jets, and the Colts (if they can fix their DEF). Then a lot of the potential contenders are there too, like the Ravens and Patriots.

The top 3 teams in the NFC have been disappointing in parts early this season, those being the Packers, Vikings and Saints. Then the usually strong NFC East has been up and down this year too.

Overall, the NFC heavy weights havent looked as consistent as some of the AFC guys, but due to the playoff format, its wide open for an NFC team to win the SuperBowl IMO as they are likely not to face as tough matchups in the lead up. Whereas in the AFC, all four weeks looks to have tough matchups.

Steelers vs Dolphins. Predictions Matho?

Hey heart is telling me Dolphins by a saftey...... but lets get real here, IMO the Steelers are the best in the AFC by a mile ....... dam only one lose when Charlie Batch & Dixon was at QB, shows how good the Steelers are on all sides of the ball ...... But the match up I can't wait for is Marshall against Polamalu, what will help our slot man Davone Bess but if Fins win it's will be a fluke ....... Dolphins are a good team but the Steelers are a great team heading for Super Bowl tittle number 7
But for Miami just look at there three wins ...... just got home against the Bills (the worst team in the NFL), a win @ the Vikings only because Misi Koa forced afumble in the end zone from Farve and got home in OT against a injury hit Packers side ....... Not good form for a team what has a Conference with the Pats & Jets

But match of week 7 is Vikings @ Packers (Vikings by a field goal) and the Cowboys should fine some form this week against the Giants or it's time Jerry Jones swings the axe ....... (Cowboys by a touchdown)

Those three are no way the best in the NFC no way ...... the Eagles & Falcons are the pick of the bunch right at the moment may be followed may the Giants & Bears .......

I wouldn't bet on the Packers, Saints or Vikings making the play offs at all

why??

Because the Packers are one dimensional with no Ryan Grant at RB you know Rodgers will throw the rock 90% of the time ....

The Saints are struggling with the fact that there the champions & every team (not counting the Buccs) have got close to knocking them off this season.....

The Vikings why the trading Jackson to the Giants a couple of months ago will show how good they are if Farve get injured and has to sit out some weeks or may be retire mid season!!!!!

They were the top 3 teams in the NFC last year is what I meant, and all 3 along with the Cowboys (like every year) were most 'experts' picks in the NFC at the start of year.

Out of those 3, i'd only have the Saints making it. Their defence has been good so far this year, but their offense has been below par and its only a matter of time before they hit full speed, probably tomorrow against the Browns. Favre is finally showing his age, and the Packers face a tough task with all their injuries. Those two teams best chance is if the Bears fall off the face of the earth, which is a possibility given their Oline woes.

Personally I think the Playoff will look like (records a rough estimate);

NFC
1. New Orleans (12-4)
2. NY Giants (11-5)
3. Chicago (10-6)
4. Seattle (9-7)
5. Atlanta (11-5) (WC)
6. Philidelphia (10-6) (WC)

AFC
1. NY Jets (13-3)
2. Pitsburgh (13-3)
3. Indianapolis (12-4)
4. San Diego (9-7)
5. New England (11-5) (WC)
6. Baltimore (10-6) (WC)

I agree with you on some of your predictions Jonno .....

NFC
1- Philadelphia Eagles
2- Atlanta Falcons
3- Chicago Bears
4- Seattle Seahawks
5- New Orleans Saints
6- NY Giants
*But won't rule out Washington or the other 3 in the west yet......

AFC
1- NY Jets
2- Pittsburgh Steelers
3- Tennessee Titans (There my smokey)
4- Kansas City Chiefs
5- New England Patriots
6- Baltimore Ravens

*Colts, Texans, Broncos & Dolphins will be in the hunt for a wc spots

Which just means that (insert any top notch AFC team here) are going to be more battle tested, no?

Yes probably. But also, theres mental side of things. Getting yourself up 3 or 4 weeks in a row to play SuperBowl caliber teams. Its the NFL, and no matter who you play in the playoffs, your going to know your in a game, so the NFC teams will be prepared, no doubt about it.

Also, if it wasnt in this format, the top teams in the NFC would have to go through 2 or 3 AFC teams before becoming Superbowl champs, which on current form the top 4 or 5 teams in the NFL are in the AFC (many power rankings show this). Due to the current conference format though, its guarenteed there will be an NFC team in the Superbowl, and as the saying goes, "any given Sunday".

Anyway, there is a lot of football between now and the SB, and who knows what might happen, the NFC teams could go on a surge, while the AFC teams have a form slump. Thats the beauty of the NFL, like the NRL, its so hard to predict.

I've been watching Bills lately, looks like they wont need to take a QB with their number 1 pick, Ryan Fitzpatrick looks to be their solution.

4 game stats
11 TDs
4 INTs
242 YPG (7.3 Avg)
102.0 Rating

Granted he hasn't got them a win, but he's taken them damn close and what he has to work with damn that's a good effort.

Not sure who they should #1 overall and they will probably take a QB, but if I was them I'd be rolling with Fitzpatrick get him so O-line help and watch him produce in the future.

Hey his a soild #2 but look at Matt Schub & Carlson Palmer soild backups, now pro bowl QB's after getting there shot ...... Fitzpatrick has been around along time to learn his trade so totally agree that the Bills should take there #1 pick of the draft (the Bills are the worst team in the NFL & should stay there to get the #1 pick) & get some help in the O-line ...... But they do need a young back up QB as well ......

If I was in the Bills war room come next April (as a fins fan would love too ).......
Rd 1- Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Rd 2- Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
Rd 3- Mike Pouncey, C, Florida
Rd 4-(from Seattle) Josh Bynes, ILB, Auburn
Rd 4- Kelvin Sheppard, OLB, LSU
Rd 5- Lance Kendricks, TE, Wisconsin
Rd 6- Shiloh Keo, S, Idaho
Rd 7- Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State

Steelers lost to the Saints by 10. They just left too many plays out on the field. Knew it was going to be tough coming up against a desperate Saints team at home with both our starting DE's out, but it was a game we could've won, that's the sickening part about it. Gives us something to work at though.

As for the Pats, I knew they were a good team but I was a little skeptical at first. Lets just say I'm a believer now. IMO they're the team to beat at this point of the season. The results don't lie.

Personally, despite the win/loss records, I still think Steelers and Jets are better and possibly Ravens just a tad.

The Steelers just lost Aaron Smith for the season, Mark Sanchez is average, and I'm yet to be convinced that Joe Flacco can win a game in crunch time off his own merits. Meanwhile the Pats are the Pats and are finding a way to win games, even without Randy Moss and a top notch defence. Oh and they have the best QB in the league in Tom Brady. As much as it pains me to say, I'm taking the Pats here.
