NRLW premiers Newcastle are pursuing North Queensland coach Ben Jeffries to fill their vacant coaching role for 2024.
In a move that would shake up the NRLW landscape for next season, Jeffries has risen to the top of the Knights’ hit list to replace premiership-winning mentor Ron Griffiths.
The Cowboys’ coach is contracted to North Queensland for next season and would need a release from the club to take up the offer with the Knights.
However, if he is granted one, the Newcastle role would make a perfect fit for Jeffries, who grew up in Forster and lived and coached in the area for most of his career before heading overseas to play in the Super League.
He was signed to the Knights and played in the club’s lower grades in the late 1990s before making his NRL debut with St George Illawarra in 2001.
Jeffries was the Cowboys’ inaugural women’s coach this year and has been coach of the Indigenous All Stars side for several seasons.
The delicate situation is ongoing between the Knights and the Cowboys, with others also in consideration for the role.
Both State of Origin women’s coaches Tahnee Norris and Kylie Hilder are also being considered for the job after Griffiths, who led the Knights to two consecutive NRLW premierships, moved into a full-time role coaching the club’s NSW Cup side for next season.
