Knights Injury and Suspension Updates

Damn that was a hell of a strain for Ponga. 😢
Purely speculative here, but I think he added a few weeks trying to play through it….

If it felt good enough to “try and play on” - it would likely have been grade 1 and a few weeks maybe to get it feeling good.

I reckon he’s done more damage trying to play on and turning it into a grade 2, really makes him susceptible to re-injury if he rushes back.

Notoriously hard to determine if they have healed properly without putting them to the test.

Horrible luck. But also horrible management of the situation if I’m being critical.

We do also lose Brown for his defence. That’s also a big loss.
Yes, Brown does a lot of work organising and covering for the players around him. He has really good game sense, which you would think would be natural to most players at this level, but isn't necessarily.

That’s why so many have been so down on him, it’s not just that he’s quick, strong and skillful, it’s that he has “it” as well, decision making, calmness under pressure, etc… that he didn’t become clearly the best 6 in the game, a guy who “takes over” every other game, that meant he disappointed expectations. That’s how talented he is.

Looking at the positives: Kalyn & Dylan combined beautifully from game 1 after only two weeks of pre-season together. They should be able to pick it back up again quickly.

Now Sandon & Fletcher get a bit more "in" time together, which should help if we get another injury later in the year & Sandon has to come back in.

We do also have a looming contract negotiation with Kalyn coming up, and it wouldn't be the worst thing to have a bit of tape of Fletcher at 1 with Sandon in the halves in the back pocket going into that negotiation, particularly if they go well. I think they will.

Should there be more emphasis on the doctors, coaches, trainers to pull these players straight off when there’s a certain type of injury. Particularly with 6 man bench now. Mentioned on here Ponga may have made his injury worse playing on. Just pull them off and get a proper assessment in the room. I feel that’s happened a few times with players trying to stay on the field.

The curse strikes again......every year same crap over and over
Honestly I reckon we are a better squad the young kids have had experience can cover for a few weeks! I feel for kp all this non contact injuries! When he is on the field and in the mood he has been in I reckon he is the best player in the comp! Fingers crossed he can get this niggles sorted as his body fully matures

At this stage "best player in the comp when in the mood" has to go to Reece Walsh, but Kalyn's certainly had a stronger start this season.

It’s so frustrating for everyone, fans, club and himself. I honestly think his form, he would get another Dally M if he could stay on the field. I really hope it’s only 6 weeks.

Yes.
Any muscular tear type injury should be straight off, bundled with ice. Get a scan. Go from there.
Hamstrings are just horrible injures.

I know it was a trial, but the Dogs pulled Burton when he felt a twinge. He played 2 weeks later. There’s absolutely every chance if he played on, he tears it more and it’s 6-8 weeks.

Sometimes, they’ll cop a cork, and you kind of need to keep it moving. The second you let it cool down and sit, it’s pretty much game over. There’s some things you can “run out”.

We have Sharpe unable stand on his leg without it giving way. Think he largely lucked out. And without being an echo chamber of a few weeks ago but GET HIM SOME ICE!

Ponga feels his hammy go. Enough to not kick. Tries to play through it and obviously pulls up, and now has the “hamstring hobble”. He’s made that worse. At least he got some ice.

Brown gets strapped up like a mummy. Thankfully half time was only a few minutes away, and able to test it out. Then next minute he is in an immobilisation knee brace.

I largely think protocols/best practices were followed with Sharpe and Brown. You need to test it out (I’m choosing to say they are testing it out, rather than running it out…) I get that. Ligaments are kind of more structural, you can to a degree, strap them and support certain movements to limit the strain/pressure, but tape can only help so much.

Anyway. Particularly in the Ponga case, I can’t help but feel let down by that situation. Blind Freddy sees him pull up lame, clutches his hamstring - should be off at that point. I think that run added 2-4 weeks.

I think the other 2 are just a bit of salt in the wound.

Nice insight brems. Thanks

Yes, the Bradman Best hamstring situation springs immediately to mind.

Yeah, this has happened a few times with Ponga where it was blatantly obvious he needed to come off but his pride/ego/determination meant he stayed on. I remember when he first did his Lisfranc and he stayed on for absolutely ages even though he couldn’t run. It might have even cost us a try from memory. Thankfully it wasn’t as long this time but you wonder whether his standing in the club often over rules the judgement and good sense of the medical team.

Let’s hope it’s a full recovery and doesn’t become a persistent thing for him!

Fairly early in the first half against Manly Dylan Lucas ,clutched at a hammy after a tackle, then minutes later McEwan was hobbling with a leg/ankle injury. Neither came off , and trainers gave thumbs up to continue after very quick assessment on field. Nothing else mentioned during or after the game.

Players know their bodies and are able to diagnose the problem to an extent, and generally hate leaving the field, especially early in the game.

It’s a double edged sword though, because it can cause further damage, and that’s what we saw with Ponga.

Fletcher Sharpe should have been taken off immediately against Cows in Vegas, so I think the trainer was at fault there. Sharpe probably didn’t do anymore damage but it definitely cost us a try because the trainer knew the guy was on one leg .

Ponga needed to be told to get off now, it’s the trainer and clubs duty of care, especially with his injury track record.
