Kalyn Ponga re-signs with the Knights

If KP was chasing money when he left the Cows, just maybe that isn't a big focus for him nowadays.

He does seem to be a fairly grounded bloke, he has definitely matured since the milkshake days and given the Knights have made him very wealthy, along with his Nike sponsorship and fox deal he had, he must have a boat load stashed away.

I may be wrong but I doubt he is motivated by building a bank account.

Wherever he goes now, he is set for life.

I heard he a rumour that Ponga left because he had a stalker.

Some guy always posting on the cowboys forum about him and about his dad wanting to be famous. And that the cowboys boss isn’t shrewd enough.

Cowboys were happy to see Ponga gone because it seemed the stalker went with him.

Hope it’s not true.

Best post I have read on here in a long time!

Ponga quotes " I want to win a comp here, that's pretty much my only goal". Let's see how true this is.
Exactly man, that's all we can really go off as it stands. If he leaves within a season or two then his words didn't really mean all that much. That doesn't mean I think he'll stick around for 10 years chasing one though. This damn club just can't seem to get out of the doldrums. It would hurt so much if we can't even get there while Ponga is here, would just seem like a massive waste.

That could be what Ponga is thinking!

I could spend my whole career here and never win a thing. What a waste.

And words don't mean much unless he comes out and says, I am not leaving Newcastle. Otherwise they are just words to say to the media.

How often do we hear from a player that they want to stay and their manager is taking care of it, then next minute they sign with another club. Or clubs say the coach has the full support of the board, 2 weeks later axed.

Deeds mean something, words are worthless.

Yeah but plenty of good players never win anything. Matty Bowen, ET, hindy, Stacey Jones even our own K gids. All players whom stuck around at clubs because of loyalty to the club not just the playing group. Seems all the traditional type players"men" are lost to the game and it's just a business now which I understand but a person has a choice and I respect that.

I just hope kayln can become that player we all know is in there consistently and lift all the group around him to win the big gong while his still here. 🤞

I reckon Ponga's Dad said to Gardener we want this (2 year option in our favour ) or were out of here. What option would Gardener have other than to agree if he wanted to keep KP here ..

Negotiation is about power. KP held all of it.

We needed him, he didn't need to extend,he could have walked and have over half the NRL thinking about signing him.

We couldn't offer him a chance at a premiership, we can't really offer anything any other club could, except money. So before he could be poached by another side getting in his ear and saying why are you busting you butt there for 600k when you can come here for a mil, we bumped up his contract.

KP didn't need to commit to a longer term deal and to ensure he had flexibility he put in the player option for 23/24.

Knights no doubt had plans on where we were heading and with a few extra players and a few years further on think they would be top 4 material and KP would be safe and happy.

This is the year it all needs to come together for Knights or I can't see KP staying.

I honestly wouldn't pay Tommy Turbo $1.5 million a year who easily a better player than Kalyn.

As others have said if they are that dumb they can have him.

On top of all his other revenue, surely an extra $400-$500k a year isn't the be all and all if he really is serious about winning a comp, we are way more likely than the dolphins over the next 10 years.

The Dolphins have ****ed up free agency so badly they may be worse than we were in 2016. If he wants to go play for a club which may literally go winless, him & his dad are dopes. See what getting belted every week does for you as a player long term.

Managing the salary cap should be pretty simple.
We work out what Ponga, or any other player, is worth to us, make him a fair offer, and if someone wants to pay silly money, we lose him and spend our money on players that offer good value.

As I posted above, money is the only thing they can offer, and Bennett.

Having said that, it would be a massive risk for him to sign there being really the only player of note. And there is more to life than money for a player like KP that already has plenty and is certain to earn plenty more from footy and after footy. He is set now to the point money shouldn't be the main factor in a decision.

He could go to the Dolphins, they get a fairly drab team put together and they are getting smashed week in week out. Not going to do his QLD origin chances any good, nor make him an attractive option for union if that be his goal at some point.

Good thing is we are now an attractive club to come to, sure we are no Roosters who click their fingers, but we have no trouble attracting players and don't have to pay overs anymore.

If he wasn’t injury prone I would but as it stands I agree

If it was simple, wouldn't all clubs be doing it well? The devil is in the detail; 3rd party deals, other clubs willing to pay players overs, the pool of players that are available at the time a roster spot needs to be filled, human nature and at the time of the negotiations and the emotions and cognitive biases that each party brings to that delicate process and deadlines. Lots of moving pieces i reckon.

Hope Pong signs before the season starts.
