Canberra Raiders' Jack Wighton to face ACT Magistrates Court over nightclub incident

Canberra's Jack Wighton is set to face ACT Magistrates Court on a string of charges from an incident at a nightclub.

The news comes a week after reports first broke of the Raiders fullback being under investigation for an alleged assault that occurred prior to the 2018 NRL season.

According to the Daily Telegraph, coach Ricky Stuart is set to name Wighton in his 21-man squad for Saturday's game against Parramatta despite the upcoming appearance in court.

Wighton is facing a total of nine charges from an alleged altercation in Civic, Canberra, during his 25th birthday celebrations, with ACT Police in possession of CCTV footage of the incident.

The charges include five counts of common assault, three counts of reckless or intentionally inflicting actual bodily harm, and one count of urinating in a public place.

"The Raiders have notified the NRL Integrity unit and will be not making any further comment as the incident is an ongoing police investigation."

The NRL has not given any sanction that would prevent Wighton from playing.

"If Ricky wants to pick him, he can. There is no reason why he can't be picked," Raiders CEO Don Furner told News Corp.

"Jack has to front court, he has due process. It’s up to Ricky."

This highlights our problems with the judicial system, incident occurred prior to season start but taking until now to go to court and if it goes as per normal will be deferred for several months for one reason or another.
Doesn't sound like a serious crime, got drunk, got in a fight, got carried away and hurt people then due to drinking needed to pee and did it in public rather than wet pants.
I understand we don't want this sort of thing happening by anyone, anywhere but am sure it goes on in many places on most fri-sat nights just not always 1sts grade footballers.
Unless he is sent to prison, need prior convictions I would assume, he will get good behaviour bond, end of story resume playing and continue playing with Raiders with a tut tut warning.

Andrew Webster on 100% Footy last night said he's heard the Raiders are done with him & will sack him as soon as this is dealt with. Though you would think they wouldn't name him in the squad today if that was true.

Assume if they are done with him he is a series offender, surely if this is first time and isn't sent to prison then a warning and on with life is most likely, must be more to this than we are being told and then again why name him in squad.
 
Don't know about that done with him.

Continues to train and play pending the court hearing until his guilt has been established. The piddling in public won't bring much of a penalty. Bird did it on a Police car on his wedding night without NRL recriminations.

Funny we live in such a desensitized world where people think 8 charges including assault and bodily harm isn’t serious...

If found guilty then no thank you he can go to prison where he belongs.

I explained the serious charge bit in a later piece don't be selective in criticism not everything is worded perfectly in these threads.
If he is guilty and of to prison I don't want him either.
 
Common assault could be pushing someone in a aggressive manner.

The 3 counts of bodily harm would be 3 punches.

A farking pub fight where another nrl player was probably provoked on multiple occasions before the chit hit the fan.

So yes those 9 charges will probably end up with a 2yr good behavior bond due tohim being a footballer, though 9 out of 10 things like this end up as section 10s.
 
Theres even the possibility that some drunk wenker started on him because he is a footy player and jack was the better brawler and won. Its happened plenty of times before. We will know if they release the footage i guess.
Innocent until proven guilty.
