Fletcher Hunt discussion

Think he's got the makings of a long term player at the club and has had some very good moments so far but definitely has struggled the last couple weeks.

Definitely burned out and needs a break from first grade.

Centre is the hardest place to defend.
I don't know where he played as a kid, but he played all last year as a fullback or 5/8 in Ball and Flegg and he started this year at fullback and then did some wing and finally centre.
He might have only played a handful of games at centre in his life, and it takes ages to become a good defender at centre. Bradman Best was rubbish at it for his first year and a half. Gagai was a rubbish defender his whole first stint at the Knights - for years.
Teams are picking him out a bit now.
If we think centre is his future, he probably needs a season at centre in reserves to develop the instincts needed to defend at centre - or let him learn it in firstgrade like Bradman did.

Hunt’s got some potential with his threat in the air, but I’m not convinced he’s ever going to be the best option in any position. Obviously right centre is where the space will open up in 2027 but he doesn’t seem to have the right instincts for centre. The defence is excusable given his lack of experience and will develop, but you can tell he’s not a natural centre in attack either.

I think we made the right call keeping him on a development contract for 2026 before getting a top 30 spot. Need to give him some more time to develop before he’s even considered as a regular when everyone’s fit. We didn’t expect him to be playing so much FG this year though.

I keep seeing people referring to him as being good in the air. From what I've seen of him in first grade, I cant remember more than just being willing to compete that I've noticed (ie the tap back in the Manly game). Is he actually really good in the air, like safe as houses and scores tries in the past in reserves? If so, we should be working it into the game plan.

The try he scored in that game was sensational. In cup he was noticeably good in the in the 1-2 games I saw him play. Honestly think we’ve hardly had enough ball in the opposition for our halves (who also struggle with attacking kicks) for him to showcase his skills the last few games.

Difficult for any attacking players when we only had 40 percent of possession for the whole game against Penrith; and having to make 450 plus tackles.

He scored that cracking try from getting a kick vs Manly, in addition to winning the game with the tap back. Has looked great under the high ball when played on the wing as well.

I checked out two preseason training sessions with my daughter in January/February, he was training with the top squad at centre both times.

Good question. @Billy will be able to answer this
He is pretty easy to recognise and I remember he was close to the only guy I wanted in the pre-season squad who wasn't in any of the photos pre-christmas.
I don't know, but what I think happened was he started in the part time squad with Dobson and was brought into the top squad after Christmas when Jye Linnane got injured - so I think he only got half a proper pre-season, but went well enough to get picked for trials.
