FIFA World Cup 2026

Yeah, you’re right 48 to 32. Really not sure where I got the 4 teams eliminated thing from. Must have been a comment on a podcast that reinforced my blind hatred of the modern day FIFA organisation!

Good round up of the teams there. I reckon Japan will be dark horses to go far in the tournament.

In terms of “getting World Cups” then surely Germany are Queensland? Even when they turn up with a dodgy team and look terrible in the groups they always find a way to make it through to the latter stages. With Wirtz, Musiala, Havertz and Kimkich they have some quality in their team.
Haha! I did the “maths” more times than I care to admit and got 4 a few times as well. But it didn’t make sense 😂

I was thinking - 12 groups, 8 best 3rd place go through : 12-8 =4. But 48-4 =44. *googles how many teams. *googled knockout to confirm round of 32.

The realised I was forgetting the 12 last placed teams haha.

Good point re: Germany. I’d forgotten about them.

This best 3rd place thing will help a few of the bigger nations that may “start slow”.

I think there’s a lot of pressure on France to win this. I think a lot of the other “big dogs” are underrated and low expectations - or at least I haven’t been subjected to much hype about your Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, England and even Spain.

Amazing what a quality coach can do with a group of good young players.
I think for ages diehards would say Australia needed to keep chancing their hand more not get into the arm wrestle and hope for an opportunity. Even if Turkey scored at least you’re giving it a good dig.
We’ve seen them do it in the past but for like one game not all three. And you have to do it against these sorts of Euro teams. That aren’t on the elite end but if it’s a draw you’re happy sometimes.

I was watching the TRT news this morning (news out of Turkey that gives an interesting spin on the Iran war).
They said Turkey has only been to one other WC in the last 50 years and they came 3rd in 2002.
They were pretty much counting this game as an easy win and mostly talking about playing the USA and how good a win over them would be.

Great start.

Some big ones to drop your Captain and Irvine, who is one of my favourite players over the years. Usually tireless in the midfield.

I was most excited to see Irankunda on this stage, and he delivered. What pace. If we plan to “defend” for large periods of the game, we need an attacking threat like him up front. If you stack 11 behind the ball, it’s inevitable at this level, they will score. So having an outlet to counter with is a must.

Beach did well too. His save of Canhanoglu’s shot was great. I’m just sad there’s not some better camera angles of it. To be fair, I think Ryan gets beat on that shot. Ryan’s distribution is a bit better though, so while it’s hard to drop Beach based on his performance, it wouldn’t surprise me if Popa has some specific players in mind for certain games.

Newcastle’s (South Cardiff Junior) Connor Metcalfe with a nice goal to seal the victory.

Overall, great, gritty performance.
In the modern World Cup with best 3rd places moving on, a 2-0 win, sure puts one foot into the round of 32.

Also, I’m a big fan of most of the changes they’ve made to rules.
I think it’s 5 seconds for a throw in - then it’s reversed.
5 seconds can be triggered by the referee for Goal kicks.
Keepers have 8 seconds to release ball.
10 seconds to leave the pitch when subbed otherwise you need to wait a minute to try again.
If you receive injury treatment - you go off for a minute.
All things to eliminate time wasting.
There was even a free kick reversed the other morning. Defender given a yellow for a tackle. Replay showed it was a dive. Reversed. Attacker got the yellow. Step in the right direction.

Pet hate of mine - South Cardiff is Lake Macquarie - Not Newcastle.
Craig Johnstone was from Booragul - Lake Macquarie - not Newcastle

The biggest one of all - Paul Harrogan bills himself as Mr Newcastle - comes from Belmont and as far as I know, lived in Lake Macquarie for most of his life, but has moved north now.

Lake Macquarie has a bigger population than Newcastle, but anyone who does something good, immediately becomes from Newcastle.

Greater Newcastle Region better?

I mean, why stop at local council boundaries?

Newcastle is only postcode area 2300.

Newcastle Knights should be the Broadmeadow Knights.

WC favourites Spain 0-0 with Cabo Verde was quite the shock. 23 shots/8 on target to 6/1. Spain will probably still qualify first in their group, but I reckon there are quite a few heavily invested punters that have some sleepless nights ahead.

Getting out enthused by this USA team.

Overawed by the occasion it seems. Think they really wanted to beat the US and take it to them. That desire is showing, but not in a positive way.

Our mindset is let’s show these yanks.

Our tactical set up is submissive and negative - 5 at the back, 4 in midfield. We are inviting pressure and have no outlet when we win it back.

Something about the reff cramping and time wasting really irked me. Thought he was terrible actually and im not saying he did anything here but he was banned for match fixing and every call seemed to go the way of the US.. just saying.. orange man strikes again maybe..
But we were dreadful in the first half and they just wanted it more.
Also interesting starting side choices, getting tips of Loz? 🤔
