English Recruits Watch

Maxibon

Tim Maddison
Wasn’t the best game for Giants especially since they had a one man advantage for 65 minutes.

Will Pryce
Could’ve ended up with 2 try assists but the winger on his team is honestly the worst player I’ve ever seen. (Watch video to understand)

Also nearly scored a nice try at the end of the match.

Absolute domination by Wigan with Bevan French scoring 7 tries.

Kai Pearce-Paul
1 Try Assist off the back of a damaging run.
And a few nice touches down the right hand side.

I think Pryce could be the 6 we need, he has a similar build to Wighton but imo he has a bit more class.

When he gets here I think he needs a few games in NSW cup rather than us throwing him straight into the NRL.

But I do believe he has all the tools to become a great player.
Stepping, passing, running and a few nice short range kicks from what I’ve seen.

We could get an early release, will just have to pay a transfer fee.
It's not ideal to be dealing in transfer fees just for some young English kids, but we seriously need to do something to help next year. The depth in the squad I feel has been getting worse each year under O'Brien. And it's only getting even worse. We're on track to be an even crappier team next year unless we start recruiting soon. Seriously have not been happy with the recruitment and retention team since Browny left.

Eggs, basket, yes basket case
While looking for the easy answer we are sinking, if, yes IF, he gets early release, if we pay the transfer fee, if he is the player we hope, need and finds his feet in a uptempo competition playing with not quite so good team mates yes all will be good . I hope for Knights fans that it all works out as like many others I crave success but not over confident

Will definitely need some time. Still very raw with a lot of improvement left in him, was dropped by Huddersfield last week.

His effort areas are non existent, a lot of slow walking and not getting into position quick enough. Inconsistent execution and forces his hand too much. Talent is there, but a long way to go.

I assume there must be some money left on this years cap since we cut Pearce and replaced him with Milford reportedly on a minimum contract. Hopefully we could use our cap savings this year as transfer fees.

Watching Pryce now it’s basically confirmed he’ll come here at some point. Agree with Pure_Knight, the talent is obvious but for every instance of him throwing a nice pass for a line break or breaking a couple tackles, there’s a couple of him running into a brick wall or going around in circles doing nothing. Classic stuff you see from a young player still learning, you can tell he used to just run over everyone as a kid coming through.

I think either way the sooner he gets to Australia the better, you can get away with playing a lot more laterally without earning the right first over there, and the conditioning/strength work you do in an NRL pre-season is a much higher level.

The standout good points for me:

- He’s right side dominant and his passing is much crisper (and with better timing) than Clifford’s - he’s a better fit for the role Clifford & Milford have been employed in this year than Jake is.
- He’s a goal kicker. A good one.
- I see no evidence of a big, booming boot, so we won’t see any towering bombs, but I agree with Maxibon that his short range kicking is notably good and it’s probably the best part of his game right now, takes high % options (loves the chip bomb to his winger we’ve been crying out for) and executes with a lot of finesse.

I don’t disagree that he clocks off on effort areas sometimes but he looks to be very vocal and dominant out there for a 20 year old who usually gets named at five-eighth, which is a good sign.

Dom Young was way below NRL fitness levels when he arrived and still struggled in his early games last year.
It's only this year you can rely on him to be able to keep putting in for 80 minutes.
I suspect these new guys will need 2 NRL pre-seasons.

Dom missed half of his first pre-season to be fair, due to not coming over until after Christmas and then having to do his mandatory quarantine.

Anyway Pryce has obvious talent, right side dominant five-eighths are the exception rather than the rule so he fills a need for us, and without getting too eugenics-y, he’s not an unathletic white guy so I’m bullish about his ability to cope with the athleticism and pace of the NRL. I’m keen on the signing. Which probably means he’ll be a bust. 😂
