Dane Gagai

$350-400K. Maybe push that up to $400-450K if necessary to get it done. That’s fair market rate considering what other rep caliber outside backs are earning, factoring in his age; if Addo-Carr’s reported $550K/season deal with the Dogs is true, somewhere between 350 and 450 is right for Dane. And if a club as short on clout as the Dogs can get that done, surely bloody Wests Group can do this. If he wants more, let him go and see what else is out there. I’d be shocked if there’s a club able and willing to go over $500K atm - if there is, fine, on to the next prospect. Maybe Naden or something. But if he’ll take that it’s a no brainer as far as I’m concerned.

We haven’t re-signed players like Lachie Fitz, Edrick Lee, Kurt Mann, Connor Watson & Hymel Hunt at this point, so the money is definitely there. It hasn’t been allocated. At least have the bloody meeting, then worry about players who frankly are not as good at rugby league as Dane is after that.

Since signing most those guys you mentioned coming off contract you’ve signed Klemmer, Frizell and had significant upgrades to Ponga, DSaf and Best.

I don’t think you guys are as flush with cash at the moment as you may think you are.

Besides only Watson out of that lot would be on decent coin.

Watson got a pay cut this year

I’m getting flashbacks of Gagai’s horrible defence, I thought I would never have to worry about him missing tackles for us again.

Yeah I believe we are a bit tight in cap space now. I'd be happy with Dane at the right price, no way we get in a bidding war.

Oh really? Well even less cash to play around with then.

I think the major hint at being low on cap space would be the early decision to not re-sign Lee as he would be looking for a bumper pay rise now that he can call himself a state of origin rep.

I don’t see how you can tell that to Lee having just played SOO last year and then go get someone like Gagai on the same if not more than what Lee would of commanded.

I think with Eddie it might be more that we don’t want to pay rep rates for a player who’s only fit half of the time. I reckon Lachlan Fitzgibbon in particular is on pretty okay money, he was one of our best forwards when we last re-signed him, and he for sure isn’t anymore...

Fitz resigned around the time he was scoring a bunch of tries off Pongas hip and looking like a champion, that's over and he has done nothing since so there should be some money freed up there. I would be offering fitz a pie and coke contract to play off the bench. I am not sure it wouldn't just be better to have Jones on the bench after what I seen of him last week.

Fotz needs to be on near minimum. He is a toiler and nothing more.

I cant see any other club offering hom decent money.

Dane back here, I was glad to see him going and not looking forward to his return. He has the skills but just doesnt have the game turning moments he should.

Over rated.

There’s some clubs which are absolutely buggered for decent back rowers who’ll be interested in Fitz I reckon. Cowboys being the most obvious. I don’t want to be Mr “Let’s Punt Our Local Juniors”, and his dad running the club’s major sponsor maybe makes it a bit of a delicate situation, but he’s that exact tier of player where a good club would allow him to move on & be ready to replace him from within. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen from Brodie Jones and he looks close to ready to being that first drop back rower, and then beyond that ideally we’d bring another junior through for depth, or grab someone on the cheap from another club.

Outside backs & bench props/starting lock definitely bigger areas of need at the moment I think.

Cowboys won’t go for him. Got some very highly rated young back rowers coming through.

We have however just cleared up about $2 million in cap space for next year with what’s happened in the last week or so.

Well one has just started the last 2 games with Hess being shifted to the bench....

2 others are only 18 and recently turned 19 respectively so no need to rush them in this early in the season. Both are also on development contracts so not eligible for selection.

Still got Gilbert to come back from injury as well.

Logic says we should take gags for the right money if he’ll play wing, but it’s hard to forget the years of paying him big money to underperform.
If we sign him, I’ll try to see the good side of him.
If we don’t, I’ll quietly say to myself, thank god for that.

Dane Gagai @ the Knights:
128 games, 29 tries, 40 try assists, 52 line breaks, 75.63% tackle efficiency, 131 run metres per game.

Dane @ Souths:
74 games, 26 tries, 18 assists, 30 line breaks, 78.97% tackle efficiency, 121 run metres per game.

I can’t find tackle bust stats for his whole career but I’m pretty sure he’s consistently at about 5 per game.

Joey Manu, the player widely regarded as the best centre in rugby league:
96 games, 30 tries, 27 assists, 35 line breaks, 78.26% tackle efficiency, 96 run metres per game.

I guess it’s possible that Manu is staggeringly overrated...

Speaking of which, what do you think Condon's job security looks like? Thinking of bringing him into my Supercoach side this week.

I’d probably hold off on bringing Condon into a fantasy side. He gets gassed pretty quickly and we will also have Gilbert coming back in the next week or two. Will be interesting to see where and how he will get used by Payten.

That is why you shouldn’t use stats to decide who the better player is.

Manu is by far and away the premier centre in the comp right now.

“Far and away” the best centre in a comp which includes Zac Lomax, Latrell Mitchell (yeah I know he’s a fullback atm but he’ll be a rep centre his whole career like Inglis), Bradman Best, Josh Morris & Stephen Crichton?
