Quote from Matt Gidley;

Asked for his theory on why crowd numbers have risen, despite Newcastle’s results, Gidley said research indicated an “overwhelming desire” for fans to cheer for a team comprising a strong home-grown component.

“I think what we’re doing is what our members and fans have asked for,’’ Gidley said.

“They want to see a real focus on the Knights being a development club again.

“Over the last 10 years we’ve probably chopped and changed our philosophies on recruiting and retention.

“Quite clearly we’re back in a development phase, as we were back in the first two decades of our club’s history, when we won premierships on the back of local talent.’’

I think that says it all.
The fans are voting with their feet. They want to see Newcastle players doing their best for Newcastle.

I agree Bill! The numbers tell the story, let's hope for another big turnout on Sunday!

I am GUESSING around 20,000'ish!:dancing:

The numbers are only up because we have had barely any home games, if we keep losing towards the back end of the season the numbers will drop right off. These crowds are awesome don't get me wrong but I wouldn't look into this increase all that much at this time of the season.

This is a negative. I'm not quite sure why but this is a negative. Just ask Slots, Lords etc.

Mate, cmon roopy. understand your point but are you sure this team will deliver anything but a loss in crowd numbers once the small sample size diminishes?
It's clear that fans are buying into what Brown is doing.
Actually, it's not all Brown. The extra money spent on juniors under Tinkler is where this all started, and Gidley, Stone, Hagan, etc have all been onboard.

We have been losing consistently for 2 years, and the crowd numbers have suddenly and unexpectedly picked up.

We probably do need to start winning a few games by the end of the year to keep people interested, but the same Newcastle people who lined the highway for 30 kilometres when the team left to play in the 2001 grandfinal, and filled the stadium at 2 in the morning when they came home are excited by having locals to follow again.

Good news but needs some perspective imo

Round 10 last year marked our 6th game at home with an average of 16,427 (Including Round 10)

They have used the average home crowd figure after Round 26 (15,891) and said it's 14.25% gain

After 3 home games this year our average stands at 18,157 whereas after 3 home games last year it stood at 16,840 so yes that is a gain but of 7.82% not 14.25% at least that's the way I see it

Once again, Don't want to sound negative and it's great to see our fans supporting the club in these tough times plus it is a gain but just not as big as the Herald says imo

I just had a look at getting tickets for the game tomorrow. When did they get so expensive? $28 for the hill and $38 for a seat in the grandstand. It's a joke.

Was looking at tickets yesterday. Western grand stand is packed and only odd seats here and there. But plenty in Joey Johns stand. I'd assume another 18k+ crowd

When TInks came in they made single game tickets expensive, and memberships cheap (relatively) to boost member numbers.

I really find it hard to believe that crowds are up...be delighted if it was true though...
I can still recall when general admission was $15...and we paid it and were happy to do so and if you didn't get there early well you were ****-outta-luck 'cos it was standing room only...

I've always though they should make a whole swag of the Eastern Stand General Admission and charge 10 bucks to get in.
