Inspirational Jeremy Papamau plans for future on and off the field
BRAVE Knights teenager Jeremy Papamau will begin a traineeship with his manager after he recovers from chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer.
Papamau's courageous decision to speak out about his illness was inspirational, especially at a time when so many league stars are creating negative headlines.
The 17-year-old Australian Schoolboy has completed the first of six weeks of chemotherapy and remains positive and strong.
Apart from aiming to return to the game next year, Papamau wants to become a player agent and will start learning the trade with his manager, Craig Pearce, when he feels up to it.
Papamau thanked Knights medical officer Neil Halpin and everyone at the club for helping him through his life-threatening condition.
"Neil Halpin has gone out of his way for me and the Knights have been great too," said Papamau, who was in the first year of a three-year contract before his enforced break.
"They've covered all my medical bill so I'm glad that I'm here until 2010 so I can get back on the field and repay my debt."
[PI9017] He is fighting to regain his spot on Newcastle's left wing but Cooper Vuna has been included in the preliminary World Cup squads for New Zealand and Tonga.
But Vuna, who was named on a seven-man bench for the game against Gold Coast on Monday, is undecided about making himself available for either nation.
Aku Uate, who is keeping Vuna out of the run-on side, was due to return to Newcastle yesterday after flying home to his native Fiji to attend his grandmother's funeral.
Props Ben Cross (thumb and knee) and Jesse Royal (knee) are almost certain to return for Newcastle's game against the Raiders in Canberra tomorrow week.
[PI9017] Knights skipper Danny Buderus said a simple domestic task was the reason behind his knee scare in the lead-up to Monday's victory over Parramatta.
Buderus, who missed three games with a fractured bone in his left knee, had treatment for most of last week on torn cartilage in his right knee but was his usual dominant self against the Eels and pulled up mostly pain-free.
"I've had it for a while but it finally went on me the other day when I was on my haunches getting something out of the freezer at home," he said. "It locked up on me and I couldn't get up. It was ridiculous.
"I had a knee guard on at training and it was really sore but it freed up and came good."
* The Knights will enjoy a recovery session with a difference next Tuesday. They are booked on a late-afternoon flight after their game against the Gold Coast the night before so they will spend the morning cooling off at Wet'n'Wild Water World.
