Bradman Best discussion

His issue is his defence, his reads and decision making at times are terrible but hopefully that's just an age thing because defence in the juniors is not compulsory
I agree his defence still needs work but I think he has improved a fair bit on last year's positional play and reads in the centres...I think having Dane in the squad has brought some mentoring and support that should improve his game as he develops.

I think part of the problem for Bradman in attack is caused by a few things - the lack of quality from the service inside him, the constant changing of personnel/structure and lack of sophistication in a game plan to actually use him and his best attributes. Most of the time he is at his best when he receives the ball in broken play and he can draw multiple defenders and create overlaps for his outside men or they stay out and he can use his strength one on one to beat his man.

I think he has talent but he needs players and well executed plays that capitalise on his strengths

The problem with moving Bradman to the wing isn't that he couldn't do it.
The problem is that he has nearly as many try assists as tries at centre. He is very good at drawing the defence and putting his winger over for a try, and if you move him to wing, he won't be doing that.

I don't hate it but with Gags indifferent form now might not be the right time to shift someone him out of the centres, would allow Gagai to go back to the left where he enjoyed the best form of his career at Souths.

If the basis of the decision is fast-tracking Young to centre which is inevitable anyway then there is some merit in considering it.

I just hope it means they're going to move Dom to centre. Our most dangerous ball runner and rarely gets to touch the ball outside of early set hit-ups (which he can still do as a centre). Defence is sus but no worse than Gagai, and I'd put Hymel alongside him on the wing to hopefully help there.

Best is injured anyway so Edrick keeps his spot for now, but at full health should be Best/Gagai on the left and Young/Hunt on the right for the rest of the season.

Not arguing, but does moving Young to centre take away from what has been his best attribute this year, strong kick returns?

I’m here for Dom and Braddy on the wing. Yeah Bradman has that fend and offload going, but he’s still a bit of a blunt instrument and doesn’t bring a great deal of skill or good judgement to backline shifts.

The fact that “how do we get Braddy going in attack” is such a conundrum is definitely down to the coaching staff yeah but, let’s face it, also down to the fact the bloke’s a bit dumb. He doesn’t run good lines, he makes bad decisions, etc.

And yeah the team’s attack is bad, but a big issue we have is we struggle to get downfield, and we also struggle to stop the other team rolling. We’d be better at the latter with less gassed forwards who could push the line speed a bit more, and better at the former if our kick returns and early set hit ups were more powerful, if the backs were harder to dominate in the ruck, etc.

How often have we been stuck in quicksand in our own end until Dom wound up and came up with a big run which got us out of trouble? I think Dom is on track to be one of these wingers who runs for 180m+ a game, but you literally can’t have too much of that. How unbeatable do the Panthers look now that they’ve got a guy who’s almost as good of a yardage runner playing on the other wing?

Let’s see what happens if we really have him wind up and charge into open space. It’s at least something different.

Talk that Best is going to be shopped, can’t believe it, still young for a NRL player, sure he has some work to do to improve his game but lacking quality around him such as positions 6 & 7 doesn’t help.
He is signed until season end 2024, surely keep him and then assess what we have, lots of players contracts end 2023 including Clifford, Clune, Fitz, Hodgson, Hunt, Johns, Jones, Klem, Mann, Randall, Thompson, Tuala and Young, 13 in all and only a few you would keep over Best and only a few are younger.
Weeding out players is ok if you have suitable replacements

Bradman has been in open space maybe 2-3 times the whole time he’s played for us. We’re clueless.

The try Best scored towards the back end of the Broncos games was probably one of the slickest offensive plays we've put on in an opposition 20 since the Roosters game in Round 1

Best takes on Staggs and wins

Kotoni Staggs had the better of things for most of the night but not this time as Bradman Best one ups him for a try

And it is the same story with our utilisation of Dom Young... a player with that much size, strength and speed and what do we do...largely use him up and waste him as a battering ram into the teeth of the up and in defence from our red zone?!

Someone's gotta quiz Barry Toohey on why we keep making our backline battering rams so when it comes time to actually do the fun bit we are so buggered to even try. Then tell him to take that to Adam and say the fans wanna know.

Think Best is seriously overrated on here. I expected him to break out last year but time and time again he lets you down with either his poor form or injuries.

The ‘potential’ he has is just a myth at this stage. Got by on sheer size in juniors but can’t do it against the men and he has no football talent in him.
