ANTHONY Mundine has vowed that by the time he is finished with helping troubled Canberra star Blake Ferguson through his rehabilitation, he will never drink another beer.

Mundine, a teetotaller and Ferguson’s cousin, has taken the 23-year-old under his wing since Ferguson was dumped from the NSW side, after being charged by police with indecent assault over an alleged drunken incident in Cronulla.

The champion boxer told NRL360 on Wednesday night that he has faith Ferguson will respond to his treatment and turn his career around. "l'll tell you one thing, when he’s done with me he won’t have another beer," Mundine told NRL360. "I really believe that, I believe in the kid, I believe in how I’m working with him and how he is responding."

Canberra Raiders coach David Furner calls for Blake Ferguson's return

CANBERRA coach David Furner is pushing to have suspended NSW Origin star Blake Ferguson back for their next game - describing it as "essential" to keep the troubled centre in footy.

While the Raiders took their unbeaten home run to 11 games against North Queensland on Sunday, the real talking point continues to be Ferguson, who will contest indecent assault charges in Waverley Local Court on July 16.Speaking with The Daily Telegraph, Furner revealed that, should his troubled centre be cleared by the courts, he will push to have the 23-year-old named in his side to play Parramatta following the bye."

Initially, the NRL said Blake would be out four weeks and after the bye it will be four weeks," Furner said."Obviously we have to go through the right channels, but I'll certainly be asking about things to see where we're at."So, yes, I'd like to have Blake back for our next game because he needs to be playing.

I'll say right now that he still has a long way to go (with his rehabilitation) but an essential part of that is to have him back in a footballing environment.

NEWCASTLE veteran Willie Mason has questioned Canberra's leadership in the wake of the latest disciplinary drama involving one of the club's stars.

Speaking candidly about the latest incident surrounding Blake Ferguson, Mason asked whether the Raiders senior players were strong enough to come down hard on players who were tarnishing the club's name."I'm not sure Canberra have that whole system," Mason said on NRL360after explaining how his Newcastle teammates would confront a player who had misbehaved.

"I don’t know if the senior players down there like David Shillington are strong enough people to say, 'Hey mate, you’re letting down the whole club and yourself personally.'"I put it down to that club and the lack of leadership down there."

Ferguson was axed from the NSW squad ahead of game two of the State of Origin series and stood down from club football by the NRL after being formally charged with indecent assault of a female at a Cronulla nightclub.

Blake Ferguson's tomorrows are destroying today, writes Paul Kent

THE tomorrows are endless when you are Blake Ferguson's age.

Get stood down from Origin? There'll be more.Suspended for drinking? Always next week.Hungover and can't make training? I'll be right this afternoon.

The tomorrows are endless because when you are Blake Ferguson's age, 23, you are going to play forever and anyone that has ever had to make that tough call on retirement can tell you all about it.

We call it experience.

But when you get to a certain age you find there are many people with yesterdays, and in some of the ghosts of footy past the yesterdays are filled with what ifs?

We forget about them because we seem to only remember the success stories.

Mark Geyer was as big a wildcat as you have ever saw during his career and has totally reinvented himself as a morning radio star. His early career came with a parental warning, and was nothing like the ambassador for the game we see now.

NRL to block Blake Ferguson's return for the Canberra Raiders

THE NRL is set to block Canberra's attempt to have Blake Ferguson's suspension lifted once the NSW Origin winger appears in Waverley court on a charge of indecent assault on Tuesday.

The Raiders intended to lobby the NRL to re-instate Ferguson after his initial day in court, reasoning the charge was expected to be adjourned to a hearing at a later date.

But the NRL maintains Ferguson's suspension stands with the Raiders flyer still in the process of completing the alcohol management program he was ordered to undergo.

Ferguson was stood down after being charged with indecently assaulting a female patron at Cronulla's 2230 bar on June 18, with the NRL pledging to review the situation after four weeks.

On Tuesday, the four-week deadline arrives. The Raiders initially hoped Ferguson would be re-instated for Saturday's match against Parramatta in Canberra but the NRL has torpedoed the move.

Canberra Raiders star Blake Ferguson answers assault charges at Waverley Court

The alleged assault was quickly reported to police and the 23-year-old league star was charged after handing himself in at Waverley police station.Dugan, who Canberra sacked earlier this year after another drinking scandal involving Ferguson, was not accused of any wrongdoing over the Cronulla nightclub incident.

We need Fergo back: Tilse

Canberra’s senior playing group is just as anxious to get wayward centre Blake Ferguson back from suspension as coach David Furner is, according to prop Dane Tilse.

The veteran forward has denied reports that Canberra’s senior players had been left frustrated by the relatively lenient stance the Raiders have taken against Ferguson following his infamous night out with Josh Dugan last month. Ferguson was suspended for at least four weeks by the NRL and forced to face court on Tuesday to face an indecent assault charge – where he pleaded not guilty – stemming from that night.

Tilse admitted he had been disappointed by Ferguson’s actions, which came just three months after he was sanctioned for the infamous rooftop drinking session that led to Dugan’s sacking, but insisted the playing group was ready to welcome the troubled star back into the fray.

Canberra Raiders green light Blake Ferguson's return

DAVE Furner knows the Raiders season could ride on Blake Ferguson's behaviour but the coach says he wants to give the troubled centre another chance - and, importantly, so do his teammates.

With the NRL on Tuesday expected to give Ferguson the green light to make his return from suspension this Saturday night against St George Illawarra, Furner on Monday opened up to The Daily Telegraph about a player he says "is a good kid" who wants to be a better man.

"He has been compared to Greg Inglis and he has a way to go yet but he has talent and the build and he is special," Furner said."He can do anything in the game but if he doesn't work on himself as a person he won't give himself a chance.

"But I wouldn't go this far if I didn't think he was worth it. I like him and the players do as well.

"He needs some guidance and he has to change his life and he knows that."

NRL reinstates troubled Canberra Raiders star Blake Ferguson

UPDATE: THE NRL on Tuesday reinstated the registration of Canberra Raiders centre Blake Ferguson following his suspension last month for repeated alcohol-related issues.

The league said Ferguson had participated in an intensive four-week program of rehabilitation since being stood down on June 17, including counselling.

The NRL's welfare and education unit has over the past few days reviewed Ferguson’s adherence to the program and agreed on an ongoing support plan with the Raiders that he needs to comply with in order to maintain his registration.“Issues like these are not solved overnight but Blake and the club have committed to a number of steps going forward and we will continue to work with them,” NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said.

The NRL added that Tuesday's decision was unrelated to Ferguson's court proceedings relating to an indecent assault charge and that would be assessed once the proceedings are over. Ferguson has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Anthony Mundine says Blake Ferguson will make Australia's World Cup side as world's best centre

ANTHONY Mundine has revealed his bold plan to get a resurrected Blake Ferguson into the Australian World Cup team, insisting: "My little cousin's gunna become the best centre anywhere on the planet."

With Ferguson on Saturday returning to rugby league, Mundine has opened up to The Daily Telegraph about a private mentoring role that has seen the wayward 23-year-old boxing, working with community groups, even "studying" champions like NFL great Ray Lewis.

After hosting the dumped NSW Origin star at his home for a month, Mundine says the pair will now continue their process daily via telephone with the aim of getting him into a Kangaroos jersey by October.

"With a strong mind Blake Ferguson will be the best centre on the planet," Mundine says. "Not a good centre, not a great centre, but the best centre anywhere."So my focus, it's to get him right mentally. To get his head strong. I've been teaching him my philosophies on mental strength so that, when the time comes, he is going to make the right choices.

"And believe me when I say he will; that he's turned the corner . . . I'm expecting nothing but greatness from now on."

I don't think it needs to be said, but I want to say it anyway. Mundine is an idiot. Shut up. You stopped being relevant so long ago.

I am putting my left testicle on that ferguson will be suspended/sacked over another incident before he wears an Australian jumper

BLAKE Ferguson will make his first top grade appearance since being stood down by the NRL following a controversial drinking session with former teammate Josh Dugan.

Ferguson will line up in the centres in the only personnel change for the Raiders, who suffered the biggest defeat in the club's existence last weekend in a 68-4 mauling by Melbourne.

His return results in Jack Wighton moving out to the wing, with Reece Robinson named as 18th man.

Ferguson has not played in the NRL since June 15 against Penrith, a breakout season ruined by a late-night drinking session with Dugan as the pair celebrated their selection in the NSW team for State of Origin II.

Wayward Raiders centre Blake Ferguson accused of creating ruckus in Kings Cross cab rank

ANOTHER day. Another Blake Ferguson drama.

Still to return to his teammates in Canberra, the wayward Raider has now been accused of creating a disturbance at a Kings Cross cab rank in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The latest upheaval comes as Raiders insiders concede Ferguson is no chance of remaining at the club, thanks to a falling-out with senior players and a contractual clause that’s made him a free agent following last week’s sacking of coach David Furner.

Cronulla is the firm favourite to secure his signature, with Paul Gallen and Todd Carney leading a Sharks player pitch for the NSW Origin star to return to Wooloware.

After posing for photographs with Carney at the Clovelly Hotel on Saturday evening, Ferguson kicked-on to catch up with other mates at popular Kings Cross night spots Tradmark and The Club.He was spotted at the latter venue around 1am in company with several Tigers players.

Witnesses claimed he appeared at a nearby taxi rank a short time later, acting erratically under the watch of three security guards.“He was just going really crazy, saying he had to get the next cab because he had to get home,” one male onlooker said.

“It was upsetting a few people in the line.“The security were trying to keep him under control and they managed to get him into a cab and on his way.”

Ferguson denied acting inappropriately at the cab rank.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Ferguson was still in Sydney on Monday night and does not plan to return to Canberra until Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Kent writes a letter to Anthony Mundine on 'The Man's' influence over Blake Ferguson

DEAR ANTHONY: Like many I have been reading about Blake Ferguson and, like many, see a career spiralling out of control. We all ask the same question: where is it going to end?

The other night Gorden Tallis was saying on the Matty Johns Show how everyone knew someone growing up who was going to be the next big thing but, for a thousand different reasons, never was.

The road of wasted potential. It got me to thinking, watching you trying to help Ferguson, of two men who could help each other.Redemption is a funny thing. You and your crew have made a lifetime of taking.

You walked out on St George for better money at Brisbane. You went back because the Dragons returned with a better deal than Brisbane. You took up boxing because the money there trumped them both, and for the next 13 years nobody in Australia took more money out of the boxing game, and gave less back, than you.

The me-first model is being successfully adopted by Sonny Bill Williams and Quade Cooper, was done less successfully by the likes of Solomon Haumono, and is at work again as Blake Ferguson is shopped around for best offer among NRL clubs. And all the time we're being told you're there mentoring him.

I know that as your career winds down you have got to thinking about the path you've taken, and where it has left you, and that this little thing called legacy that athletes like to polish is on your mind.

A man gets to thinking about what he has done in life, and your time has come. And so you are now helping Ferguson, who has it all before him and is in danger of blowing it.
