Bloody hell james u made me change my vote - top 5 sounds awesome! i was only 3 in 1995 so i have no chance of remembering it.

I am sorry but we will have 2 agree 2 disagree. 5/16 teams in the finals just isn't enough. I agree there neeeds 2 be a new system, to avaiod the 1vs 8 etc, but 5 teams will not only make the finals season less exciting but the whole season as well

It's not good for the money the NRL makes, but it is the fairest system. It will just never be used because it's all about money.

The more finals teams - the more fans stay interested and think their team has a chance.
The more finals games - bigger total attendances, more tickets sold, bigger tv audience.

It's stupid for Bennett to say that 8th is a mismatch with 1st. If so, than they shouldn't be there, they are wasting time. It's a chance to pull off the underdog story. It's possible.

Look at Melbourne this year - you have to say that they should be in the grand final, and it would be highly unjust if say - they lost the grand final qualifier.

lol james you been reading my wish list again?

It starts off 2 vs 3 and 4 vs 5 (loser eliminated).

Then the winner of 2vs3 plays 1 - winner goes straight through to grand final. Loser of 2vs3 plays winner of 4vs 5 (loser elminated).

Then the last two remaining sides play each other in the third week to find the grand finalist.

It it the best and fairest system pretty much ever invented.

Could they do a similar thing with a top 7?

Probably. They had a top seven in 1997, but it included a match between Newcastle and Manly that had no impact whatsoever (both sides progressed to the grand final qualifiers the next week regardless of the result).

But there would be a better system for seven teams than that, I'd say.
