Aaron Woods

I never rated him as a meter eater but we could do with an offloader and a meter achiever. Would be better then half our pack right now. $$$$ is what scares me but if dogs are paying then yes. Adlib footy has always been a newcastle style. Time to bring it back.

Can you show me a prop in history that averages 300m a game and 50+ tackles a game?

Ill put 2k on this with you right now, ill deposit it into @rhugh89 paypal account and he can deposit it to you if you show me 1 prop in history that does 300m 50+ tacckles for more than 10 games on average.
Infact I'll exstand a Olive branch, find me any player in history to match 300m 50+tks and you get 2k.

Otherwise you are being a trucking dipstick with nothing but sour chit talking.

I can't guarentee that money will find it's way to it's intended destination....Come to think of it I'm due for a holiday :p

I say NO to Woods, not based on stats or because he can't do a job but because that job isn't the type of job we need;
1. He isn't the type of player we need we need the type of prop who change the momentum
2. He isn't type of influence on younger players we need he is type player who racks up stats but doesn't do the 1%ers those little things off the ball we need our players doing to win a premiership.
3. Some staff at the last club he played for I know where relieved when he signed with the Dogs. That's not the reaction you want to hear from a club a players at when they leave.

We'd be bonkers not to throw some money at Woods, we seem to lack the ability to draw good, established props to the club, lets face it, Woods isn't popular, but we NEED a prop that can churn out good meters every game, not just every now and then, if we had him, plus if Dsaf keeps putting his performance up, we will have two props churning out 140m per game.

That alone would see us stop being dominated by every pack we play.

He has an offload which the safs lack.

Again, stupid not to throw chunks of cash at him.

I don't rate him as high as SOO selectors in the past and hope they don't pick him this year but he is a good club player and he would be good for us. He stands in a lot of tackles and gets some fast play the balls.

One of his biggest issues I think he has is sometimes he tries too hard for the offload and can sometimes lumber up to the line turn around try and push an offload and make errors, I think if he tucks the ball under his arm and just runs hard more often he would be a lot better player.

Numbers don't lie: The Origin case for Aaron Woods

If you ask most people who should be the first front rower picked for NSW, the answer you'll likely get is Reagan Campbell-Gillard.

And it's hard to argue with that given his impressive start to the year for the Penrith Panthers.

But how misleading is individual form? Is it affected by perception of how well your team is going?

For instance, Aaron Woods is almost the forgotten man when it comes to Blues selection.

But is that a reflection of Canterbury's woes or is he genuinely struggling?

It looks like Campbell-Gillard is running harder, tackling stronger and having a far more meaningful impact on the game than Woods.

It's as if he's making 42 metres or four runs more per game. Like he's missed 23 less tackles or offloaded 18 more times this year.

Well, turns out looks can be deceiving. It's actually Woods who is on the dominant end of those figures.

Granted, statistics don't always paint a picture of the truth. But they also don't lie.

Campbell-Gillard is averaging 8.9 runs per game for 98.1 metres with a total of 386.8 post contact metres for the season.

Compare that to Woods, who is averaging 13.4 runs per game for 140 metres with a total of 581.2 post contact metres in 11 games this year. Yet it looks inevitable that he will miss out with Paul Vaughan, Jack de Belin and Campbell-Gillard expected to make their State of Origin debut in the June 6 opener.

Campbell-Gillard has missed a staggering 37 tackles this year, while Woods has missed just 15.

There's also been pressure on David Klemmer to hold on to his spot but his numbers are superior to both Campbell-Gillard and Woods – or any NSW forward for that matter – averaging a mammoth 173.8 metres per game this year.

Woods has also had slightly quicker play-the-balls than Campbell-Gillard this season, averaging 3.27 seconds compared with the Panthers prop's 3.51.

By no means is this a suggestion that Campbell-Gillard shouldn't be picked, because he deserves to add State of Origin honours to the international honours he racked up last year.

But it seems as though the fortunes of respective teams somewhat dilute perception of how a player is actually performing.

Take Andrew Fifita for example. He's once again being touted as the best prop in the game on the back of five straight wins for the Sharks, but his numbers over the past five rounds aren't too dissimilar to his start to the year.

Now there's talk about Fifita playing game one and three, despite pledging his allegiance to Tonga and will miss the second game of the series as a result.

Given the way Fittler has spoken in the past and the values he seems to be basing his team on, it will be extraordinary if he jeopardises what he is trying to build by selecting Fifita.

It's almost as if the Blues have used his form spike to detract attention from all the rookies they are about to unearth in the series opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

One of those was expected to be Curtis Scott, but his brain explosion at AAMI Park – where he punched Dylan Walker – has cost him any chance of partnering Storm teammate Josh Addo-Carr on the left edge for NSW.

Can't believe we are knocking the Saf boys, Lillyman, Glasby, our locals such as King etc and we are saying Woods is not the player we want, makes lots of yards, off loads, plays lots of minutes and has done for years and still has plenty in him, buy, buy, buy.

Would take Woods in a heart beat while he needs to be more selective with his offloads his still one of the best front rowers in the game. If missing Wallace and Ah Man gets us Woods I think we will have come out on top plus Woods can be our forwards leader for years to come. Woods, Glasby, Ese’ese and the Saifiti boys gives us some depth in the front row department.

I would even be comfortable taking on more of his wage if the Bulldogs released him this season to us. We desperately need a forwards leader up front to take some of the load off Ese’ese and Woods would give us that.

Definite yes to Woods. Would be the pack leader that we are missing badly. I don’t think he’s a rep quality front rower but he’d be a brilliant signing for us.

Plays big minutes, great work rate and has a handy offload. If the Dogs are paying part of the freight it’s a no brainer.
