2027 squad

Defender1

Matthew Johns
Time to start looking at the Newcastle Knights 2027 squad.

According to Barry Toohey and Zero Tackle we have 2 spots to fill. I thought we had moved Schiller and Sullivan on. I also thought MaCarthy was confirmed as staying. Can anyone else see any changes?

Please, don't make this a debate on the top 19 etc, that's for another thread. This is just to discuss the state of the squad and confirmed signings.

This is a cut and paste from Zero Tackle.

Not fully aware of squad requirements.
Yes we have 28 but do we need to fill the other two to become 30
Can we bring Development players in to fill those two spots.
If so do we need to pay those two positions more than a development salary.
If our salary cap has been spent how can we fill those spots without available salary.
My understanding of Frizell is we couldn’t sign him for 2027 due to not having the salary required to pay him what at minimum he was entitled to, for example say he is valued at $500k, p.a. But we only have $300k couldn’t he be subsides $200k by employment, a job, or a donation by a well of local business.
Sorry if this is just my ignorance but I would appreciate some help in understanding all of this.

Yes we have 28 but do we need to fill the other two to become 30. Yes, by June 30
Can we bring Development players in to fill those two spots. Yes, but they would need to be upgraded to minimum contracts.

If our salary cap has been spent how can we fill those spots without available salary. It isn’t filled. The NRL wouldn’t register the contracts if it was. The issue is that we have only 2 minimum or low value contracts remaining (circa $150k). Realistically we’d need to be upgrading existing talent, or finding someone on the bargain bin (ie another club is k paying part of their salary)

He is entitled to do those things, but they are separate from the cap and his valuation as a player. These kinds of rules help out teams like the knights, as it prevents clubs like the roosters from paying a player $150k, and then “working” part time at city Ford for $850k a year.
See above for answers to your questions.

Third parties are often misunderstood as they are confusing. The club can make an introduction between a business and a player, but can’t take it any further. Any money they make from this deal is separate to the cap, and can’t involve the club at all. That’s why you see Reece Walsh wearing black clothes when advertising for musashi for example.

Think by start of season you only have to have 27/28 players signed in top 30 and think it’s 29/30 by 1st July

So every chance we leave spots open incase we have injuries etc and can sign somebody by mid season deadline

The fact looked at Friz the obviously think maybe another middle.

Need 29/30 filled by round one (though it can dip back under that during the season), and then all 30 need to be filled after June 30. That's when teams often upgrade development players or juniors into any remaining spots for cheap.
