2026 Recruitment And Retention

It’s something that could only happen if Kalyn left.

Incidentally, Baz on SEN today said he thinks it’s far from a guarantee Kalyn will actually stay to the end of 2027.
I have a feeling that when Parr and Ponga had a chat a few weeks ago now, they came to some kind of agreement where we will let Ponga go at the end of next year

To add to this is Sandon Smith. If we sign him, I think year one he will be our hooker, then he will move to halfback, Sharpe to fullback and Ponga free to leave

It’s all just a thought on how the puzzle pieces will come together

I'm not sold on Pezet though, his injuries and defence are a worry.
I was more sold on him by his last two performances, aside from the worry when he twinged something. I thought he was very good against Penrith and then brilliant against the Dogs. Big role in a depleted team against quality opposition and he’s coming off long injury layoffs. That’s a really good sign and he looks like he added an extra ten metres to his long kicking game while he was getting fit again.

I don’t know that he’ll be elite or that he’s on the very top level of early 20’s halfbacks - being Sam Walker, Isaiya Katoa. He’s below those two as a prospect. But I see a guy who can be a very good first grade halfback for a long period of time.

Id lose no sleep if we let sharpe play his best position and lost ponga for a genuine young half with pezets ceiling.

His salary and lack of return is a contributing factor to the ****show.
And Ponga, as a generational player has been stifled by how he has been asked to play at the Knights.
He should probably have gone to the Dolphins when he had the opportunity.
I agree, the morphing of players into a strict, regimented, sometimes bone-headed game strategy has cruelled many individuals, and the team generally of recent times.
And the medium term administration resembles Nero watching Rome burn, that nearly everyone saw except the administration itself.
Yes, it has been a ****show all round unfortunately.

Pezet only becomes viable financially if Ponga goes. Maybe Braith can give us the halfback combo deal - Peters as coach, Pezet NRL halfback and Southwell NRLW halfback.

Jake Arthur = poor man's Liam Sutton

Liam Sutton is the form player in the Qld cup and qld NRL sides are lining up to give him a pre-season.

I was thinking the other day that I could name a full side of guys who spent years in our reserves putting in good performances and turned out to be NRL players as soon as they went somewhere else.
That’s rotten Billy. Especially when our halves have been so poor for a number of years.

You would assume now that Jake Arthur has signed with FC, that Gamble won't be released for next year now? I still think Cogger will be gone with a deal set to be already done and I think Annan and/or McCarthy will follow. Cogger out Sandon Smith in, Annan out Mooney in, McCarthy out and who comes in? Maybe worth looking at a Davvy Moale, 70 NRL games experience at 22 for a middle is crazily impressive imo

This is a cracking signing if the figure of around $500K is accurate. If he's a consistent 100 metres/30 tackles/45 minutes sort of middle, and he's decently impactful in both directions, $500K is about what that costs now. I reckon Moale will get $600K for example.

But Mooney absolutely has the potential to be more than that. He's so athletic, so quick for a middle forward, and he has genuine ball playing skills. Just a matter of how bad he wants it.

These arent great numbers tbf and perhaps why he hasnt played more FG.

Yes, he plays long minutes for a middle forward. Defence is pretty good, average tackle efficiency of 95%. Averages a couple offloads per game. But by no means a metre eater. But we'd probably prefer Mooney profile than an equivalent Saifiti profile given the type of footy we're aiming to play with the likes of Sharpe, Brown, Ponga, Smith etc
