My take is that pretty much everyone in that named side above is gonna be in the 17 or at worst a commonly used squad player, and there’s no one in said 17 I’d really really be desperate to cut *except* the player Gagai may be by the third year of that deal. That’s a bit of a worry.

I think all the players we’d be most desperate to shed are gone by this year or next so, in that sense, the club is in a good position.

*in theory* we should be able to filter in some talented young positional players on their cheap early career deals, to replace departing forwards and outside backs.

So *in theory*, the club is in a strong position to pay whatever it takes to get a good halfback.

Now: how will we **** it up? Oh sorry, sorry, I meant to say: who do we try to sign?

… because 2023 is basically a write off already…

Here’s a team you can make out of the players currently contracted for 2024 or who are all but extended to then & beyond already:

1. Kalyn Ponga
2. Dane Gagai
3. Simi Sasagi
4. Bradman Best
5. Dominic Young*
6. Will Pryce*
7.

13. Leo Thompson
12. Adam Elliott
11. Kai Pearce-Paul
10. Daniel Saifiti
9. Jayden Brailey
8. Jacob Saifiti

14. Mat Croker
15. Jack Hetherington
16.
17.

*Extension/contract basically done but not yet announced.
A good list of players, but I’d desperately be trying to f*ck Gagai off to England because he gets worse every week. Waste of cap space.

If we sacked every overpaid player in the squad we'd be left with a very lonely dom young.

Still plenty of time for him to disappoint but Adam Elliott if anything has been playing better for Canberra since he signed for us… it’s called the power of love, and to love a giant woman is to yourself become a giant.

Looks to me like a straight upgrade on Barney.

I hope Elliot plays 13 for us, he has looked so good there this season and he's actually quite a skillful player.

Off contract halves and their age over most of 2024:

Five-eighths:

Cameron Munster (29)
Dylan Brown (23)
Cody Walker (34 - danger! danger! old! old!)
Matt Burton (24)
Adam Doueihi (25)
Jack Wighton (31)

Halfbacks:
Ben Hunt (34 - bzzzt bzzzt abort abort)
Hard to project a player so young, but: Sam Walker (21)
Mitchell Moses (29)
Jackson Hastings (28)
The corpse of Shaun Johnson (age irrelevant, almost certainly retired)
A whole bunch of fringe NRL players like Kyle Flanagan, Jake Clifford, Adam Clune, Braydon Trindall (mid-20’s)
The Lunch Lady (53)
My dog (8)
Luke Brooks (29)

I don't rate him much, but it's clear the club has high hopes for Liam Sutton, the 7 in Flegg and Ball this year. He played Mathews for Cronulla and was a standout for under 16s schoolboys I think, but all I see is a very impressive athlete with average playmaking skills.

Here’s the master list of players off contract that year. It doesn’t include players with optional years, to the best of my knowledge the notable players who have options for 2024 are Jack Wighton and Mitchell Moses.

Notable juniors currently in the system who may be in line for first grade in 2024:

Chris Vealia and Krystian Mapapalangi (outside backs, development players)
Max Bradbury, Paul Bryan (props), Oryn Keeley, Edward Hampson (second row) - u19’s Origin reps.

There ya go boys fix her up. I’m gonna go get another drink.
What is the absolute obsession with the Poms, no guarantees we have signed them, no guarantees they are quality NRL Firsts, are we so desperate, yes we likely are, to put our future success on them being quality plus, I will wait until they arrive and play 4-5 games and show me.
Please keep looking for others

I agree. They’re in there purely because both have been confirmed in British media to have signed with us from 2024, and those are the positions they most commonly play in England.

Having watched a fair bit of their games in England lately, KPP is like Dom in that he’s so athletically gifted that he’ll inevitably be a good NRL player if he has the work ethic for it. Pryce as a half is more of a crap shoot but he’s at least big and strong enough that I’m confident he’s up to the NRL physically. But yeah will need an experienced halves partner to make things easier on him.

Elliot in the 13 but its a decent squad, especially if 1 or 2 of the young guys kick on.
All we need is a dominant 7 and a new coach

We are supposedly interested in Drinkwater.
He’s from the Central Coast and a good playmaker but his defence is atrocious at 6 so maybe we are planning on transitioning Ponga to 6 and having Drinkwater at 1?

Is your mob aware that there is 14 other NRL clubs out there? It’s getting quite pathetic now trying to pick up all our scraps

There's also 14 other clubs who aren't the basket case that we are at the moment. Why would Drinky want to come here over anywhere else right now?

The Knights when someone suggests trying to recruit a player who plays for anyone but the Cowboys: 🫤 😠 😡 😤

In saying that, yes every day and twice on Sunday to Drinkwater. He’s crap defensively as a half, and a lower work rate fullback than KP so I’m sure the fans here will hate him, but he produced points even in the crap Cowboys teams of the last few years let alone in the current top drawer side.

Why he’d wanna come to Newy is anyone’s guess…
