2024 Recruitment and Retention Thread - Rebuild 2: This Time It’ll Work For Sure (Unironically)

It really does seem like he came back too soon last time though, is the thing. Hopefully he’s back for a decent chunk of pre-season, but if it takes longer to get it right, it takes longer.

You look at the old fracture in that X-Ray and it looks like it fractured into several pieces right near the ankle joint and they had to screw it all back into place with a lot of difficulty, so maybe it wasn't all perfect.
This new one just looks like a clean break half way up the leg, so they probably just need to do a reduction (the term for putting bones back in contact after a fracture) and give it 6 weeks to knit together. The textbooks say that bones knit together stronger than original bones if joined cleanly, and it takes 6 weeks on average and should take less for fit young men eating a healthy diet.

I hope you are right Billy. We need his leadership on the pitch next season if we are to push on for a top 4 spot!

I have no idea about this stuff so appreciate the insight. That does sound heartening.

My training in it was 40 years ago, but I suppose the basics haven't changed much, although all those screws and plates were pretty uncommon when I was being shown fractures on X-Rays

Not sure he is game breaking, but a good quality FG prop. Article saying Sean Keppie given permission to speak to other clubs.
Missed this but I reckon Keppie is a bit too much in that lumbering/low mobility mould which can cause problems defensively. If I was going to pick up any of Manly’s forwards, I’d want Bullemor. Who’s currently off contract anyway and looking for an opportunity to start somewhere. I don’t think any of our middles are so good that it’s impossible he’d steal their jersey.

We have 2 spots left in the top 30 I think we should be looking at a wing and a middle. (In bold are my two first choices):

Wing options:
  • Thomas Jenkins
  • Ken Maumalo
  • Grant Anderson
  • Billy Smith
  • Charlie Staines
  • Solomona Faataape (played centre for Easts Tigers in the q cup grand final on the weekend)
Middle depth options:
  • Ethan Bullemor
  • Luke Thompson (at the right price)
  • Jordan McLean (at the right price)
  • Wiremu Greig

If we put Laitia Moceidreke on a development deal it will also give us another option for the wing, between him, Faataape, Tuala and Mapapalangi one will fill the void.

Bullemor can also put pressure on the backrow position as he has played soem good footy in that position over the years. Great depth/bench option

Jordan McLean can never play for the Knights. He just can’t.

I don’t know what the right price for Luke Thompson is but yeah I’d kick the tires on him if it could be below $300K, good calculated risk. It sounds like he’s keen to stay in Australia and prove himself (and he’s gotten almost $2.5 mil out of the Dogs so he should have decent savings 😂) and he’s interested in going to the Roosters (how original). We can allow them to do creative accounting with train and trials for months while they negotiate releases, or we can see if $250K will convince him to come right now…

Agree about McLean, I would not be happy but i just seen him on the list, I feel like the other three could really play a role, depending on Thommos price of course

Another left field option for our wing replacement is to have a look at the current rugby World Cup, some of these other nations have some handy outside backs:

- Jiuta Wainiqolo (Fiji)
- Nigel Ah Wong (Samoa)
- Danny Toala (Samoa)

Or someone along those lines

Few young Queenslanders signed to the club probably to play SG Ball next year. (Got this info from a CODE article)
Obviously Herdegen has been mentioned already.

- Kane Self (Ipswich SHS Back-rower)
- Wailer Whaiapu (Keebra SHS Lock/Backrower)
- Zac Herdegen (Wavell SHS Halfback)
- Jake Bryan (St Patrick's College Mackay Backrower)

Self was already here this season, played Harold Matts
Whaiapu seems to be from Perth but had been with the Titans since 2020
Herdegen is apparently staying in Brisbane for another year to finish school but will be flown in for games
As Billy said, guessing Jake is the younger brother of Paul

SG Ball next year is shaping up to be pretty good.
Jye Linnane is young enough to partner with Zac Herdegen in the halves.
Jermaine Mcewen is young enough to play Ball again and we have a few quality props coming up from Mathews, including Jack Hilliar to go with Jake Bryan and Wailer Whaiapu.
Deisal Hagan at hooker is a real livewire out of dummy half.
And at fullback we'll have Connor Votano who is a potential superstar.
I don't know anything about Herdegen other than he seems to be highly rated, but a spine of;
1 Votano
6 Herdegen
7 Linnane
9 Hagan
looks pretty special

Oryn Keely set to sign with nrl dolphins 3 year deal not a done deal but looking very likely.
I believe Fletcher Myers is the only member of the 2019 HM winning 17 left from the Grand Final. What is happening to Knights retention of juniors.
What happened to Noah Nailagoliva?

Would have preferred us keeping Keeley and letting Brodie Jones go.

We still have Taj Blackman and Noah Nailagoliva, but both had ordinary years, so maybe will be let go.
So sad to see players from the 2019 HM, which I thought was our best ever, and stats back that up, playing for Melbourne, Cronulla, Manly, Parramatta, Canberra and maybe now Dolphins.
About half the team played reserve grade this year and Pezet and Keeley played firstgrade, but all can play Flegg again next year.
