2023 Preseason thread.

“Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old-- and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders”

Yea, Ancient Greek scholars wrote about the frivolous disobedience of their youth etc. Obviously the art of journaling is timeless, but that doesn't apply to commericial news journalism which didn't exist until 17th century at the earliest. And I should caveat my criticism to news journalism of 'Western wartime allies', as journalism has collapsed many times over throughout the centuries most often in countries that underwent radical socio-political changes during war etc.

But let's not pretend that the strict commitment to the art of news journalism hasn't fallen through the floor since the middle of the 20th century, for example. I appreciate that sensationalism and political biases have always featured in commercial news journalism, but the intent to at least appear objective in pursuit of the facts was something most publishers would be embarrassed to violate. These days they wear their personal vitriol with pride and honour as though journalism was a job for activists who's personal opinions matter more than the blind facts, and the public either don't know the difference or just enjoy reading the WWE Sunday Smackdown Times.

The only reason reporting standards went off a cliff is because their business model is in a slow, agonising death spiral.

Back in the day the SMH was the most profitable news source in Australia, all because they had the majority of classified and business ads tied up.
If you wanted to buy a house, car, dog or mail order bride the Ad was in the Saturday SMH.
That paper was 80% paid ads and 20% news.
Long story short - all those ads are on the net now.
Journalists have to write provocative clickbait articles about Mitchell Pearce and dogs so thousands of people click on it to pay them 1c each.

In short, only a handful of people can make a living doing quality journalism now, and they don't work for regional papers.

2nd Knight to make the NSWRL 20 stars for 2023 list - Oryn Keeley

Article that looks at the ups and downs of the draw.
They list a lot more positives than negatives.
They don't draw a conclusion but it looks like they think it's a pretty good draw.
It’s a good article by Robert Dillon. The Knights do have a favourable draw next year.

Under 2 hours to Sydney Inner West is fanging it lol. But yeah, Berro is right on the end of the M1 so should be relatively quick.
It's a regular weekend trip for me. I do it 1hr 40 most weeks. Fanging meaning over the speed limit? Cruise set to 115 😎. Makes me wonder why Newcastle aren't getting a radar on kids like this though........

Article about Souths signing a 17 year old halfback from Karuah and how his parents are driving him to Souths training 3 days a week (10 hour round trip).
I don't think he was in our Mathews squad last year.
We will more than likely be adding him to the long list of one's that "got away" who went on to Super stardom.

It's only a matter of time.

How’s the scouting work? With Newcastle anyway. Is it one guy? Was Alex McCinnon doing it before? So scouts from other clubs go all over the place? Just curious how it all works.

Back years ago they had a scout in each district(from Gosford to just before mid north coast and inner west) who then reported to a main guy at hq. Who would then put on trial games and invite said players, they'd get offered spots from them and usually other clubs scouts were at the trials aswell.

Then they started to branch out more before the McKinnon days to England, NZ etc. Obviously we seen what Macca did but as for how it's working nowadays....ive got not a clue.
