2023 Preseason thread.

I understand the AOBs quest for utilities but take Gambles view point, signed to play 5/8? But now we have Ponga to play 6 with Hastings at 7, likely Gagai at 1 if not a signing, suddenly Gamble is a likely Cup player, bench 1st grader at best so what now. I want to play first so I will play anywhere. Fully understandable, not a AOB thing but a Gamble thing.
If he keeps pressure on top 17 then great

At Brisbane he was the second in line backup so he’s in a better position here

If McDermott were our head coach i'd expect Gamble and his gritty, high effort, high risk style to be used very well in 2023.
I suspect O'Brien will either coach it out of him or drop him to reserves.

I like him as a player. And if either of our starting halves are not available for any reason he will do a good job. Especially compared to what we're used to.

But even watching him for the Broncos, you can tell why he's never cracked it as a permanent first choice half, he's just not quite consistent enough in areas of skill for clubs to be able to rely on him.
 
I am not saying his a first choice 7, his just not as crap as people make out.

They had Ezra and Walters on the books who are younger and have a higher ceiling.

Everyone hates Mann but his the logical 14 for the team, can cover 1-7, 9 and 11-13 at a pinch.

How ever Gamble will be a good yard stick for Hastings and Mann if they are sh!!!!t gamble can come straight in.
 
It’s not just about the talent brought in rather than more about the effort. Not saying Hastings and Gamble are top notch but hopefully they will put in the effort and drag a few along with them as well as the new forwards pushing the others especially the Safs and we need the Cup side putting pressure on our top 17
 
Gamble was a good idea when we were struggling to find anyone for the halves, but as things have turned out, we shouldn't need him for the halves and Mann, Sasagi, Crossland, Riley Jones and Liam Wilkinson will all be battling him for that number 14 jersey.
Oddly, we need a backup fullback like Tex Hoy, and Hull FC are pushing Hoy into 5/8 because they really need a 5/8.
We'd have a better balanced squad and so would Hull if we swapped them for the same money.

Need for both to agree for that unlikely event to happen, doubt either party would agree let alone both, Hoy isn’t great but letting him go under the current circumstances seems to have lacked planning
 
I'd rather try something new than Hoy at fullback to be honest. Hoy plays too similar to Ponga. I'm excited to see someone actually playing fullback like a fullback next year.
 
This club needs to focus less on 'backups' and more on first team players who can actually help us beat top teams. Having quality depth means sweet fk-all if our starting 13 looks like it did last season. All depth acheives in a lacklustre roster is to help protect against worst case scenarios--but what could be worse than being mediocre for 20 years?
 
Think I’d gamble focused on sprinting and dropped down 5kg he’d improve a lot. He has decent skills but is just very slow off the mark so defense has time to see what he’s doing. From my watching he has a very decent kicking and passing game

i don’t mean to be rude but what does Hoy do similar to Ponga? Like Tex as a person but he’s ball playing was so limited it was hard to watch at times and hardly a threatening ball runner.

I didn't mean he does it as well as Ponga, but his style is definitely that crossbreed 1/6 style. I'd like to see how we go with an energiser bunny, sniffing around the ruck style fullback. Hoy is not really that.
