2023 NRLW Recruitment & Retention Thread

The absolute best case scenario for roster construction which enables consistent strong performances season after season is a strong core group of players you can hold onto long term - lock those players down, then fill the gaps however you can. It’s hard to overstate how lucky we are to have Upton, the Southwells, Clydsdale, Johnston and Parker locked down, with a few more key girls like Predebon still to come. The oldest of those players besides Clydsdale (Upton) is 26, and the rest are all under 24.

It’s really, really hard to find players who tick as many boxes as they do at such a young age - recruitment managers don’t keep cycling through guys who are 29-32 to “bring leadership to the club” because they’re stupid and think it’s better to sign older players. They do it because it’s really ****ing hard to find on field leadership and competitive intensity in players who haven’t hit their prime yet.

Other clubs have made some really good signings, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a lot of mixing older girls in with a number of young prospects to try to get “a mixture of youth and experience”, because they didn’t get lucky with a generational #7 and elite forwards who are barely old enough to drink yet just falling into their laps like we did.

Not gonna take it for granted.

Roche started at halfback and has an assist and another try involvement plus a few nice other plays after 30 minutes but France look like they’d be out of their depth in Tarsha Gale Cup so not sure how much to take out of it.

She looks very capable and switched on as a playmaker but she’s not going to have as much space to work with when she’s coming up against better athletes.

She went pretty good, but like you said France would struggle in the tarsha gale.

Doing pretty well if we've replaced Manzelmann with Maynard but surprised she can't find a bigger role elsewhere.
Feels like we’re seeing the benefit of being defending champs.

If you’re only getting offers for the standard $30K, why not pick the place where you’ve got a real shot at winning the comp?

5 more resigned
Predebon and Romaniuk for 2 years - Higgins, Davison and Karpani for 1 year.
So happy to see my girl Kayla re-sign. Don’t really know why but she became one of my favourites. Feels like she was just everywhere in defence, I guess that’s why. Works so hard.

She has a wonderful ball playing ability too. Great connection with halves. But yes that defence. MmmHmm

Feel like those are all spot on in the amount of years we should be giving out to those players. Doing good things with this roster.

Higgins deserves more.
I believe she only started playing the year before she joined the Roosters and is now shooting for her 3rd premiership in a row, and I think she gets better the longer she plays.

Probably being conservative as she’ll be 31 this year. Would’ve given her a 2 year deal, as she is the best 9 at the club.

Caitlan Johnson had surgery on an MCL tear last week.
No word on how bad it was, but since she was injured weeks ago I'd guess it was not a big tear and only needed a cleanup or something.
I think if it was going to rule her out for a long period, they would be saying that, but the article did say she was unlikely for SOO.

Two more expected signings according to NRLW Watch - Abigail Roache & Felia Kia.

Roache played as an outside back for the Chiefs in Super Rugby earlier this year and played 3 games for the Kiwi Ferns in the World Cup at five-eighth, so a similar profile to Autumn-Rain Stephens Daly. Hasn’t played NRLW before but won player of the year in the Auckland women’s comp last year.

Kia is a centre/second-row who was a development player for the Titans and played for QLD u/19’s last year.

Bugger me Mia MIddleton has signed with Cowboys! I'm gobsmacked. She was looking like one of our better junior outside backs!

Cowboys look like going down the youth path, will be without a shadow of a doubt the youngest side in the comp. Really lacking a forward enforcer at the moment.

Cowboys also announced Makenzie Weale & Bree Chester, and Raiders have announced Jessica Gentle.

Of that lot I'd say Weale could've been on the bench and Middleton might have been in the running for a wing spot but both should have bigger roles at the Cows.
