The absolute best case scenario for roster construction which enables consistent strong performances season after season is a strong core group of players you can hold onto long term - lock those players down, then fill the gaps however you can. It’s hard to overstate how lucky we are to have Upton, the Southwells, Clydsdale, Johnston and Parker locked down, with a few more key girls like Predebon still to come. The oldest of those players besides Clydsdale (Upton) is 26, and the rest are all under 24.
3 years for Johnston, 2 for Parker
It’s really, really hard to find players who tick as many boxes as they do at such a young age - recruitment managers don’t keep cycling through guys who are 29-32 to “bring leadership to the club” because they’re stupid and think it’s better to sign older players. They do it because it’s really ****ing hard to find on field leadership and competitive intensity in players who haven’t hit their prime yet.
Other clubs have made some really good signings, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a lot of mixing older girls in with a number of young prospects to try to get “a mixture of youth and experience”, because they didn’t get lucky with a generational #7 and elite forwards who are barely old enough to drink yet just falling into their laps like we did.
Not gonna take it for granted.
