2022 Knights Recruitment & Retention Thread

Kotoni Staggs - club talked to him - asking price $800K (too high).

Dane Gagai - current deal $700K - would need to take a pay cut to come back to Newcastle but the club still doesn’t think they’d be able to afford him even if was willing (which, reading between the lines, I’m taking to mean Gagai’s agent has told us he’s still looking to get a pretty big salary wherever he ends up).

... Blake Ferguson is on a reported $500K at the moment, plays centre + wing, and say he wants to sign for “a team where he feels wanted”... one thing I’ve gotten the impression Adzy wants is big blokes.

Gardner's comments re: salary space could simply be a negotiation tactic. Telling the media you've got plenty of money to spend will mean player managers ask for more. The fact he was openly talking about Gagai wanting to come back makes me think it's a good chance of happening.

Since when was this the Cowboys forum. Yet I’m the one that constantly gets blamed for the Cowboys being such a hot topic for discussion

Premiership winning half that won’t break the bank like Reynolds. No complaints from me. Our points will come from Holmes, Hammer and Drinkwater if he is still at the club next season. Someone to control and do the kicking as all we need.

Bro Chaddy’s getting paid at the Sharkies and he’s giving up player options if he leaves. Cowboys aren’t getting him for a meat pie & can of coke. No one knows exactly what difference there is in salaries between Townsend & Reynolds but I guarantee it’s less than you’re thinking.

If you’re thinking ‘Chaddy’ will be on near a million a year then I can promise you he won’t be getting near that.

Reynolds has knocked back 700k from his childhood club. It would have to take a 900k plus offer to get him to Townsville.

‘Chaddy’ ain’t getting that much so yes he won’t be breaking the bank like Reynolds would have.

Are you off your head?
Grass is always greener on the otherside.
We have the best half-back since johns and people are still not happy.

I'm not sure if Andrew johns knows anything about half backs, the other day on one of the footy shows or pregame can't remember which one but he rated Pearce as 3rd behind cronk and Thurston as the best halfback to play in the past 10 years. I admit he probably has not earnt his pay check as we had to pay overs to get him here but that's not his fault. Everyone craps on about all we want is effort and people to compete. Pearce is the ultimate competitor.

There was talk on her a couple of seasons ago with replacing the safiti bro's with some no name young forwards from another club as the safitis would not amount to anything.

I don't think Hughes or Townsend are particularly great but you need to take off the red and blue glasses, Pearce has been in very ordinary form for a long time now and I don't think it's coming back.
He's still a high energy player and decent defender but in addition to his lack of kicking and control of the game, the raw numbers just aren't there.

2020
hughes: 19 games, 15 try assists, 8 forced drop outs
townsend: 12 games, 9 try assists, 7 forced drop outs
pearce: 21 games, 11 try assists, 10 forced drop outs

2021
hughes: 6 games, 3 try assists, 2 forced drop outs
townsend: 6 games, 9 try assists, 5 forced drop outs
pearce: 4 games, 2 try assists, 1 forced drop out

I reckon if you offered Reynolds $600,000 for 3 years you would get him. I dont think its the money he was worried about but how long the contract was for .

I think Gagai ends up back at the broncos

Blake Green records fewer try assists than these three, but is the best genuine halfback, so the stats aren’t everything, but I agree they don’t make great reading for Mitch. His individual attacking output was the thing which put him above the likes of Reynolds, Soward etc in the eyes of so many over the years and kept getting him picked for Origin.

If you asked me to pick out of Pearce, Hughes & Townsend for who I could have starting at 7 for Newcastle next year, I’d take Jahrome in a heartbeat at the moment. As he’s a manufactured 7, that’s a huge indictment on the other two.
