2017 NYC Holden Cup

Henry Penn doing a Sione and making the move to second-row, or did he already have previous experience in the position? It'll be interesting to see whether we'll rotate Cooper and Farr or whether the club see's Farr as just a winger, he seems a bit lanky though.

Funny how both starting second rowers have come in from the centre/wing! Should be interesting!

If coopes puts on a bit of size he will be hard to go past

pez has too much influence on who stays and goes ,if he doesnt like u your gone .you have to learn to suck up and be a yes man

To me that looked like a trial team where they were giving a lot of fringe guys a chance to impress.
I expect a very different side for round 1.
I googled the halfback and he seems to have been playing fullback for Farrer last year.

By the way he plays you can tell he's a fullback, he plays or played against canberra the same game as Matt Cooper,
He was or they were getting in each other's way. I don't agree
With your comments on round 1, Nash Birch controlled
The first half against the raiders, he was the pick of the
Hookers,
Where they struggled on Sunday was kicking in general
Play and Birch has that. It will be a similar team round 1
Pending Meaney and Stone in saying that Cooper will
More than likely play wing.
Where's Brody jones

That birch family has produced some classy footballers. Blake wasn't a bad half either. Their father was a good prop in his day also.

I'm glad Birch went well at hooker, but I can't believe he went better than Starling, unless Starling only had a short run.
I watched Starling play in the reserve grade trial in Murwillumbah, and the only guys on the field better than him were Hodko and Pythian.
If he were big enough, i'd have him in the firstgrade squad right now.

Round 1 side.

The two halves must have really impressed the coaches to make the starting side ahead of a heap of other good halves options in the squad. The 7 doesn't even seem to have been a halfback last year. His highlights on youtube show he was a fullback for Farrer last year. I quite like that Jack Johns seems to have picked up a lot from working with Dureau, who learnt a lot of what he knows from Andrew and Mathew Johns when he was in the under 20s and under 18s.
Of all the players I saw in the trials this year, Zac Hosking is the guy who I think has made the most progress. He was in the starting side of the reserve grade trial in Murwillumbah, and apart from dropping the ball far too often, he looked as good as several of the firstgrade forwards who started in that match. I think Zac will have a big year.

Tom Starling should have a great year.
He played in the reserve grade trial in Murwillumbah against Qld cup standard opposition, and he killed it.
It was funny before the game. I was surrounded by players who looked like they were probably about the same age as Tom, and they were saying how the little hooker wouldn't last 10 minutes. He not only smashed them with his skill in attack, but tackled anyone who ran at him, and also had some great runs where he broke tackle after tackle of guys who looked 20 or 30 kg bigger than him.
His profile says he is 78kg, but because he has very short legs and a big body, he looks like one of the ball boys, and you'd guess he was closer to 60kg than 80kg.
Towards the end of last season he had some fantastic games of NYC, one in particular against the Warriors. If this game against the Warriors is on TV it will be great viewing I think.

Neither Farr nor Dawson made the first round squad.
The only 2 new recruits to make the top 17 are the halves.
Most of the rest played some NYC last year. The only 2 I can't recall playing NYC are Dark and McIntyre, but they were both standouts in Ball.
Lowrie coached most of these guys last year and should be able to start the year with his game plans all worked out. The only big difference is a new set of halves.

Here's a recent article on McIntyre you might be interested in.
