He took out Rookie of the year at that position. We have to land him first. Parra are interested and seem to be looking to offer him 5/8 also. So both clubs appear to rate him at 5/8.

Time will tell!

Not his job to make metres. It's his job to capitalise once the forwards (and the halves kicking game) puts us in to a good attacking position. He can't do that, hasn't done that and seemingly is incapable of doing that.

He's good at passing to the next person in line though.
Yep.

Even with our forwards getting monstered, there's still no excuse why our senior half barely ever finds the in-goal on the 5th tackle or lacks a lot of basic fundamentals of an organising half. He has to cop a fair bit of criticism for that.

He did mate but if you watch him he's a ball runner, that is all. If that's what you want in a 5/8 then you will likely be happy. Don't get me wrong, I hope he makes a great 5/8 but I really don't see it. If he truly wants to play 5/8 then I'm happy for it to be not with Cronulla.

Now sharkstar has said Bird isn't much of a half other then a running one I went back and looked at his rookie year. Go and take a look peeps.........

The ball to lewis vs the Tigers is very nice...
Already in the line then waits for lewis to hit the hole he created by running at the line to then put lewis over untouched

He showed signs of being a real game breaking 5/8 in his rookie season, and since then he's been playing arguably the most useless position on the field in the modern game, and a position he's said multiple times he doesn't want to play. Hard to really judge his potential as a playmaker on that. From what I've seen, his first instinct is definitely to run but I wouldn't call him a selfish player at all. His kicking game is something he'd have to work on for sure.

Assuming he'd play on the right side next to Buhrer they could both play like a hybrid five-eighth/backrow role.

Foran also rumoured to be wanting a return to Sydney next year. A few halves look like moving around and being displaced. Maybe we can pick one up as a Hodkinson replacement.

RE: Bird. If he is a ball running 5/8 I have no problem with that if paired with a ball playing half. Clearly not what we have now. But I have no doubt Bird could make a huge difference to the team, and once Hodkinson is gone after next year, we can move Lamb to half, or import a better option and we are away.

All of that is true. The problem is he isn't asking for money you'd expect to pay a 5/8 with potential, he's asking for gun money. It's a very big risk imo, sincerely hope it works.

The Courier Mail has reported today that Parramatta withdrew their offer to Bird On Sunday.

The Tele has also reported today that Bird has come to Newcastle to meet with the Knights a second time. We have offered him 2.4 million over 3 years.

I hope we get him. With Ponga and Bird, we would have 2 strike players next year - woo hoo!
