Wyong Roos v Newcastle Knights
Hunter Stadium, Saturday 20 August, 12:40pm
Referee: Adam Devcich
Touch Judges: Mark Bohan, Benjamin Teague
Broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 501
The Roos and Knights do battle in this week’s Fox Sports Match of the Round, with Wyong yet to confirm a finals place and Newcastle out to prove that their drought-breaking Round 23 win was no fluke.
While Rip Taylor’s Roos sit ahead of a number of challengers with 26 points, a loss here could easily bring them back to the field and put serious doubts on their finals hopes.
Unfortunately for 2015 premiers the Knights, they are destined for the wooden spoon – but they certainly didn’t look like it with a 62-26 annihilation of the Sea Eagles last week.
Having led the Jets in the dying stages the week before, Newcastle are in some patch of form and will be no pushovers this weekend.
The Roos got the chocolates in the last installment of the F3 derby – a 28-6 victory at Woy Woy Oval in Round 9.
This time, the Knights’ ultimate fate is sealed – but they will be desperate to cause nuisance value in their home town.

Match analysis:
A local derby match will be played out at Hunter Stadium on Saturday between the Wyong Roos and Newcastle Knights in Round 24 of the Intrust Super Premiership.
Coach Matt Lantry acknowledges there’s always emotion tied up in the match-up between the traditional rivals, and with the teams' last hit-out in Round 9 seeing Wyong 28-6 winners, the Knights will be eager to get one back.
“You have the local rivalry between us,” he said.
Lantry points to a big game up front from Wyong who have bolstered their forward pack since last season.
“They are quality team there’s no doubting that and since their affiliation with the Roosters, they’ve really strengthened their stocks and have possessed some real physicality in their pack,” he said.
“With players like Zane Teteveno and Eloni Vunakece, they have some big guys and even have size in their back row with Mitch Frei who used to be here.
“Abraham Papalii also poses a threat out on the edge.
“It will be tough to contain the size of those guys, so their defensive attitude needs to be as good as what it can be for 80 minutes,” he said.
Although, Lantry says he has full confidence in the Knights’ forward pack and the players’ ability to slow the Roos.
“I thought Uiti Baker (prop) has been a massive improver and has come on in leaps and bounds from where he was at the start of the year and has worked really hard,” he said.
“He’s put some back-to-back games together that have been solid performances.
“His challenge is finishing the year really strong.
“Jack (Stockwell) speaks for himself with what he has achieved in the game and is good amongst our younger guys.
“Dave Bhana has also been another quality performer for us.”
Lantry continued to praise the efforts of the side’s part-time players who have consistently stepped up in their roles.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Grade Knights’ have ridden the high of their strong 62-26 win over the Manly Sea Eagles last weekend and look to capitalise on momentum built from that win.
“They have certainly taken some confidence away and it’s nice to see some smiles on their faces,” he said.
“To put on a nice performance against Manly was pleasing.
“What I really want to see the group do is play well again this weekend and that’s the challenge for them.
“We have challenged them consistently on their consistencies throughout their games.”
Where it will be won: Defence
“I think it will come down to whoever defends well,” Lantry said.
“The sheer size and physicality they possess may allow them to start to gain the ascendancy through the middle third.
“Mitch Williams is a really good dummy half with really good speed out of nine.
“He can be a constant threat on the back of good go-forward.
“If we can minimise how they start their sets with good go-forward and then manage the middle period of the set from plays three to play five, we’ll give ourselves a chance.
“We need to do that over a big consistent period of the game.”

Reserve Grade Knights go down to Roos
Sat 20th August, 02:30PM

The Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights were beaten 26-16 by the Wyong Roos at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
11 minutes in the Roos scored first points, winger Kieran Gallagher getting the ball down in the corner.
Tyler Cornish converted from out on the sideline, and then six minutes later fullback Dominic Reardon grabbed a try beneath the posts.
With 25 minutes on the clock Wyong continued their domination, left winger Matthew Ikuvalu grounding the ball in the corner to make the score 16-0.
Three minutes into the second half the away side scored again.
This time it was back rower Mitchell Frei who scored, and it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for the Knights.
Three minutes later the Knights scored their first try though, centre Tom Hughes busting out of a tackle to get over the line.
Bryce Donovan converted, and then two minutes later Hughes was over again when he picked the ball up deep and ran it through a hole.
17 minutes from time it looked as though the Knights could score again when Ryan Walker offloaded to Jaelen Feeney, but as the five-eighth was trying to wriggle his way over the line he was hit from behind and lost possession.
It all came undone with 11 minutes to play though, as fullback Reardon grabbed his second for the Roos and effectively ended the Knights’ hopes of a comeback.
Lussick converted to make the score 26-12, but six minutes later the red and blues hit back when winger Ken Tofilau managed to get the ball down in the corner.
Donovan missed the conversion, the final score 26-16.

Match analysis:
The Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights will be looking to harness the passion and energy surrounding Old Boys Day when they come up against Wests Tigers in their final round of the Intrust Super Premiership.
The side is determined to bring plenty of energy from the outset after failing to bring intensity to the first half of last Saturday’s match against the Wyong Roos.
“I thought we were disappointing in the first half against Wyong,” coach Matt Lantry said.
“We had five attacking sets and only completed one of those five.
“Four of those errors came on play one or two and you just don’t give yourself the opportunity to build any pressure.
“I thought if we could have gotten on the scoreboard before halftime, the mountain we had to climb in the second half would have been a bit smaller.
“To our credit we showed some real spirit and for ourselves in a position where a win wasn’t out of the realms of possibility.”
Some movement within the team’s outside backs has been forced after Akuila Uate suffered a season ending ankle injury last weekend.
“Losing anyone with Aku’s experience is disappointing but I have been really happy with the way Ryan Walker and Tom Hughes have been within our team,’ he said.
“They have made a real difference, which is critical to our performance and will do a good job at centre this week.”
As the compettion sits on the verge of finals football, the Wests Tigers are third on the ladder.
The team has been bolstered by the inclusion of experienced hooker Robbie Farrer in the back end of the season.
“They have real class right across the field. Watson Heleta (fullback) is a real danger anytime he touches the footy,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Justin Hunt in the halves was a member of the NSW Residents representative side this season.
“They will need to win on the basis they are pushing to be in the top four,” he added.
“The Tigers were beaten by Manly last weekend, we will need to make sure we are ready to play as they will be, there’s
no doubting that.”
Where it will be won: Completion
“We need to improve on our performance last week,’ Lantry said.
“If we can get the share of possession we had last week and convert that into pressure where we ask the Tigers to defend repeats sets.
We also need to be clinical with our kicking game and good out of our own end on the back of a good kick chase game.
“I think the priority is set completion and doing the best with the time with the ball.”
Old Boys Day:
The Newcastle Knights’ Reserve Grade side is eager to kick the annual Old Boys Day off in a positive way on Sunday.
“For us regardless of who goes out there, it’s Old Boys Day, we have the responsibility on the day to play with the spirit the Knights are renowned for and go back to the early days.
It was about blue collar workers and you roll up your sleeves regardless of your ability, you had to be able to tackle, have plenty of toughness and plenty of tomorrows.
They built their Club theme on the three Ts and that’s what we will expect from our team and finish the year with a decent performance.
I’m not too worried about the result as if we turn up and get some of those things done it will give ourselves an opportunity to be competitive and potentially win the game.
“This week we hone in on what the Knights were originally built on."

Newcastle Knights v Wests Tigers - Hunter Stadium, Sunday 28 August, 11:45am
It’s Old Boys Day in the Hunter and while the Knights will pick up the wooden spoon in both their senior grades, it’s the last chance for Newcastle faithful to show their support of Knights players past and present.
It all kicks off with an Intrust Super Premiership NSW clash against the Wests Tigers, who will be extremely unlucky to miss out on the top four from this point.
For all their flaws – including being the worst defensive side in the competition – the Knights have looked far better in recent weeks.
They led for the majority of the game against Newtown in Round 22, overcame Manly in a high-scoring Round 23 game and asked plenty of questions of Wyong last week.
The Tigers, who have named Robbie Farah again this week, will want to put the Knights away however, in what could be a helpful confidence-boost after last week’s defeat to the Sea Eagles.
All signs point towards a Wests Tigers victory, but the Knights will leave nothing in the tank on an occasion the club traditionally lifts for.

Reserve Grade Knights lose to Tigers

The reserve grade Newcastle Knights were beaten 30-28 by the Wests Tigers at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights went for a short kick off at the beginning of the match, and it quickly backfired as the Tigers won possession and score four plays later via centre Chance Peni.
Eight minutes later the Knights scored their first points, winger Liam Faughlin just managing to ground the ball before he was bundled out of play.
Bryce Donovan’s attempted conversion ricocheted out off the post to leave the Knights two points behind, and then several sets later the Tigers were over again via back rower Tyler Cassel.
15 minutes from half time the Knights hit back via Pauli Pauli, the massive back rower wrestling his way through several bodies to get over the line.
Donovan converted to make the score 12-10, and then eight minutes later he busted out of a tackle to run 20 metres and score himself beneath the posts.
Ten minutes into the second half the Knights were over again following a strong period of possession, bench forward Ben Stone bulldozing his way over beneath the posts.
Donovan converted to give the Novocastrians a ten point buffer, but with 20 minutes left on the clock Tigers halfback Justin Hunt returned serve with a try of his own beneath the posts.
It all started going downhill for the Knights from here, as Jaelen Feeney was sinbinned soon after for halting the Tigers’ attacking advantage on a break.
In the very next play the away side scored via winger Jayden Wheelhouse in the corner, and then ten minutes from time fullback Luke Sharpe ran 40 metres to dive over the line and give the Tigers a six point advantage.
Three minutes from time the Tigers made it eight points, but from the following kick off the Knights struck back via a returned Feeney. Donovan converted to make the final score 30-28.
