2016 Intrust Super Premiership

I suppose it was our best performance of the year.
Having Adams and Pearsall in the 9 and the 7 was probably why.
The difference between this year and last year is that we had a pretty good spine last year, and this year we rarely get more than 1 or 2 experienced spine players on the field.

Match analysis

The Newcastle Knights are searching for a repeat of their Round 4 win over the Wentworthville Magpies when the side meets them for the second time this season at Hunter Stadium.

While the Knights were beaten 33-22 by the Mounties last week at Aubrey Keech Reserve, coach Matt Lantry was impressed with the team’s overall performance.

“For 50 minutes of the 80 minutes we were the better team,” he said.

“We just lacked concentration in execution 10 minutes before half time and 10 minutes after half time.

“We spoke about our discipline that needed to be tidied up because we had a 6-1 penalty count leading into half time and within the first set of the second half, we gave away two penalties.

“We need to eliminate those things out of our game to minimise the opportunities the opposition gets.

"They are things we can control.”

Lantry commended the team for a gutsy effort and knows the players are determined to compete to the highest of their abilities when their the second game of a three game fixture at Hunter Stadium.

“I thought Pauli Pauli played his best game for us in reserve grade and Dave Bhana again was consistently good,” he said.

“The pleasing thing is we had a number of good contributors that led us to play the way we did.

“To the boys credit they really hung in there and with 10 minutes to go and against the team coming first, we were down 28-22 and put a bit of a fright in them."

Turning attention to the Magpies, Lantry points to a number of players who will have influence over the game.

“The have had a disrupted season, but still have some decent experience there,” he said.

The side features former reserve grade Knight Honeti Tuha as well as Bureta Faraimo who is a NSW Resident player and Cameron King in the halves.

“They don’t come up here with any sort of lack of quality and it will be a really tough game and one I’m looking forward to,” he said.

“Their outside backs have been consistent throughout the games I have seen in the course of the season.

“We have to be making sure we come up with some really good defensive decisions on the wing because they do have the ability to score some tries.”

Where it will be won: Discipline and control

“We have no issues with scoring points. We played the Warriors two weeks ago and scored 32 and racked up 22 against the team running first,” Lantry said.

“It’s about minimising the amount of points the opposition scores and that comes down to good committed defence and also disciple.

“If you are a disciplined team you limit the opportunities you give away with good control of the footy.

“You’re not giving away penalties.

“We’ll then be a chance to sneak two points this week.”

Newcastle Knights v Wentworthville Magpies
Hunter Stadium, Sunday 10 July, 11:45am
Broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 501

The premiers Newcastle might be languishing in last place but don’t expect them to roll over easily against the ninth-placed Magpies.

The Knights are searching for a repeat of their Round 4 win over Wentworthville when the side meets them for the second time this season at Hunter Stadium.

While Newcastle was beaten 33-22 by the Mounties last week at Aubrey Keech Reserve, coach Matt Lantry was impressed with the team’s overall performance.

“For 50 minutes of the 80 minutes we were the better team,” he tells newcastleknights.com.au.

One of the most dangerous players they’ll also need to control is Wenty fullback Honeti Tuha, the former Newcastle winger who scored a hat-trick in last year’s grand final.

Try to Pauli Pauli.
Pearsall is doing all the kicking, and both our tries have been a bit lucky with the ball lose on the ground.

FULLTIME - INTRUST SUPER PREMIERSHIP

Wentworthville Magpies - 40 (T: Tuha 3, Schulte, Kassis, King; G: Izzard: 6/6 PG: Izzard: 2/2)
Newcastle Knights - 8 (T: Hughes, Pauli; G: Donovan: 0/2)

Tuha belongs in firstgrade.
I watched him play like crap for years in our lower grades - the guy could make a 60 metre run and just drop the ball cold at the end of it.
Last year he really turned it around and was our MOTM in the grandfinal, and this year he is getting better again.
He is only 23. If we brought him back for the top squad next year, I'd be happy to see him, despite all the times I cursed him in NYC and reserve grade for his crazy brainsnaps.

Reserve Grade defeated by Magpies

The reserve grade Newcastle Knights were beaten 40-8 by the Wentworthville Magpies at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The red and blues gave as good as they got in the first half with Pauli Pauli and Tom Hughes scoring tries, but it was simply one way traffic after the break with the Magpies running in two unanswered tries and two penalty goals.

The Magpies got over the line in the fourth minute, the Knights’ left edge not doing enough to defend a kick that winger Scott Schulte latched onto.

Five-eighth Dylan Izzard did well to steer his conversion over from the sideline, but ten minutes later the Knights were back in it as centre Tom Hughes finished off a backline move with a try on the right side.

Bryce Donovan’s attempted conversion ricocheted off the upright to leave the score at 6-4, but several sets later the Knights were over again as Ken Tofilau batted back a kick for big Pauli Pauli to get over the line.

The Magpies struck back from their own half in the 28th minute, fullback Honeti Tuha finishing off a big break on the left edge.

Izzard converted to put the away side back in the lead, and then seven minutes later Tuha grabbed his second to push his sides’ lead out to ten points.

12 minutes into the second half Wentworthville got over the line again, Nick Kassis getting a charge down on Will Pearsall’s kick to run 50 metres and score.

Things got worse for the Knights soon after as Luke Yates suffered a head knock in a tackle and had to be assisted from the field.

Soon after Wentworthville picked up another two points as Izzard slotted a penalty goal, and then with 15 minutes left on the clock halfback Cameron King got a try.

Tuha completed his hat-trick two minutes from time, Izzard converting to make the final score 40-8.

For anyone interested, James Taylor is now playing for Souths in the local league. Not too sure when he started playing there, but he came off the bench and was easily the best forward on the park.

The few times Taylor got fit, he really seemed to have something. He was short, but built like a gorilla with long arms and a low centre of gravity, and he really could move laterally in defence. The pity is that he just got injury after injury and only got match fit 2 or 3 times the whole time he was here.

Probably could've flourished if he stayed in NZ, but the opportunity was there to possibly get into firsts but that never eventuated.
