Newcastle Knights (12[SUP]th[/SUP]) v New Zealand Warriors (2[SUP]nd[/SUP])
Hunter Stadium, Saturday 11 June, 12:40pm
Broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 501

At first glance it might look like a pretty uneven contest in this 12[SUP]th[/SUP]-versus-second clash, but two big mid-season signings might just level the playing field enough to create a good contest in Newcastle.

After a period of speculation, the Knights this week secured the contracts of Roos and Roosters outside back Brendan Elliott, along with Mounties second-rower Mitch Barnett.

Elliott has shown his class in his 14 NRL games to date and while Barnett has been unable to add to his two appearances this year, many would consider him the form player of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW in 2016.

The pair haven’t been named in either grade this week, but Newcastle coach Matt Lantry explained that a call will be made late on where they will play in Round 14.

“We’ve got a few that are under an injury cloud in the top grade so Nathan (Brown, NRL coach) will train today and make his decision late this afternoon,” Lantry told NSWRL.com.au.

“They’ve been brought to the club to play NRL, not necessarily Intrust Super Premiership NSW so if they perform well I assume they’re hopeful of securing a first grade position.

“It just adds a little more depth and hopefully we can start to get some troops back and begin to be a little bit healthier of a club.”

It remains a tough ask for the Knights to take down the Warriors, who have now won six games consecutively – including a 26-6 victory over Newcastle in Round 7.

As usual, however, Lantry isn’t concerned with his team’s ladder position or the results of past performances.

“Irrespective of the result and irrespective of the position that we currently sit on the ladder, it’s important for our guys to take something away from each game,” Lantry said.

“There’s no reason we shouldn’t be up to perform at our best as individuals to get something from the game.”

That call in the 79th minute when the Warriors player dropped it cold but the ref called penalty really got me angry but that aside I thought it was a great effort for most of the game by our boys and if we can improve of that we will string a few wins together

Gallant Knights edged by Warriors

The Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights were beaten 34-32 by the New Zealand Warriors at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights were first on the scoreboard, fullback Bryce Donovan collecting a short ball to get over the line.

He added the extras to his own try, but four minutes later the away side hit back via halfback Jeff Robson.

The Knights were in fine attacking form though, and four minutes later winger Matthew Soper-Lawler leapt skyward to grab a spiralling bomb and score.

Donovan added the extras to double the Knights’ lead, but six minutes later the Warriors again pegged the home side back with a try to centre Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

With 31 minutes played the Warriors took the lead for the first time, forward Shaun Lane forcing his way over the line.

Less than a minute before half time Knights five-eighth Kurt Aldridge came up with a crisp pass for Luke Yates to run ten metres and score.

Donovan added the extras to make the half time score 18-16, but four minutes into the second half the Warriors scored their fourth try via Mason Lino.

The away side were on a roll now, and five minutes later Ata Hingano found a hole to sneak over the line.

The Knights weren’t giving up just yet though, and 20 minutes from time edge back rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon got over the line.

Donovan added the extras to make the score 28-14, but again the Warriors bounced back with a try, this time to James Bell in the 66th minute.

Four minutes later Soper-Lawler made it a brace on the left touchline, collecting a classy pass from Fitzgibbon to score.

With only a try in it the Knights went for broke, and with four minutes left on the clock Mayo Uta collected a pass to dive over the line.

Donovan was unable to convert though, to leave the final score at 34-32.

Match analysis:

The Reserve Grade Newcastle Knights prepare to play rivals the Penrith Panthers on Saturday in Round 15 of the Intrust Super Premiership competition at Pepper Stadium.

With plenty of history between the two sides, which includes back-to-back grand final match ups, the Knights are determined to make a good account of themselves in Penrith.

The Knights fell two points shy of the New Zealand Warriors last weekend at Hunter Stadium with the Panthers chasing their fourth-straight win to help secure their spot in the competition's top six.

While the Knights failed to record a much-needed victory, the team presented a quality brand of football and competed right until the final seconds of the game.

“I think its important we back up that performance from last week. We can’t just hang our hat on one performance,” coach Matt Lantry told Knights TV.

“We need to make sure we are ready to play again.

“The Warriors are second on the competition ladder and fielded a really strong NRL experienced team.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky not to win the game and just didn’t manage that first 10 minutes after half time where we let two soft tries in and then chased our tail a little bit in the second half, but we showed plenty of character.

“If we can keep a consistent team on the park of similar quality, I’m sure we can upset a few more sides before the end of the year.”

The Knights have retained a number of players with first grade experience and have also named Akuila Uate on the wing.

“(Lachlan) Fitzgibbon, Pat Mata’utia and Dave Bhana remain with us and Aku (Uate) comes back," he said.

“I’m looking forward to his (Uate’s) contribution to the team and it’s a real thrill for the young guys within our group to play with him also.

“We have Pauli Pauli back on the edge too so it will be interesting to see how he goes. He has a big frame and will be good to knock out some minutes with him."

Matching it up front with the Panthers is always important according to Lantry.

“Generally they are a big physical side," he added.

Meanwhile the Panthers' line-up bursts with NRL experience.

“James Segeyaro is back there (at hooker) and Jamie Soward, we will need to make sure we control the middle third because if
we don’t, Segeyaro is really dangerous out of dummy half,” he said.

“Soward off the back of that bit of momentum can be dangerous as well.

“One thing we spoke about last week was backing our ability and not fearing failure or what may or may not happen, just having a
go,” he said.

“We took a little bit of the shackles off the team last week and played a lot freer and backed our ability.

“We had a theme that if things break down, they broke down with us trying and I think that’s an important theme with a young team to carry on this week and ensure whatever we do as a team, we are all on board and playing our part.”

Where it will be won:
Completion

“If we can complete well, I know it’s a cliché, but I think it’s vitally important for our team at the moment," Lantry said.

"We need to get through our sets because over the first part of the year we haven’t absorbed pressure overly well.

“We haven’t been able to defend back to back sets so if we can minimise our opportunities where the team has back to back sets through completion of good discipline, I think that will certainly help us be competitive through out the 80 minutes.”

Live stream - reserve grade - 3pm

http://www.penrithpanthers.com.au/news/2016/06/16/livestream_panthers_.html

Stockwell out.
Uate and Pauli Pauli are playing.
Also Pat Mat, Bhana, Fitzgibbon etc.

Player to watch - Moa Uta. He has been out with injury for a long time, but in the early rounds he was destroying guys with his hard running and massive tackles. Very similar to Junior Sau I thought.

- - - Updated - - -

Logan Harris might also be worth watching. I heard he went well in his first game for us last week, and we signed him from the Qld cup mid season for some reason.

- - - Updated - - -

live stream has started - just an empty field so far

Will Smith scored for Penrith
6-0

- - - Updated - - -

Pauli Pauli is having a shocker.
When Will Smith is making you look bad, you are having a shocker.

Pauli Pauli is trying to do a lot of work, which is good to see.

- - - Updated - - -

Harris seems a very good dummy half.
He has a good pass from dummy half and doesn't mind a run, and he also does plenty of defence.
Don't know what Uate is doing. He is wandering around in backplay like he is looking for a chance to run, but he hardly ever does.
Baker was good, but only for very short minutes as usual.

The only good thing I can see is that Pauli Pauli is trying to get involved with everything, but he keeps making errors.

FULLTIME - ISP

Penrith Panthers - 44 (T: Watene-Zelezniak 3, Harawira-Naera, Smith, Hall, Soward, Pua G: Soward: 6/8)
Newcastle Knights - 6 (T: Walker G: Donovan 1/1)

awful
the one positive is that Pauli Pauli did a lot of work and must have done his fitness no harm - but he also made a heap of really basic errors as well.
