2015 ICC Cricket World Cup

Probably wouldn't have made much difference in the grand scheme of things but it meant James Taylor was denied the chance of a century.

JP Duminy 115 (100)
Tafadzwa Kamungozi 1 for 34 (8 )

It's a terrible mistake and regardless of what the match result it shouldn't happen

Common sense and yet none of the umpires got it right

40 people involved in wild brawl over Cricket World Cup clash between India and Pakistan

POLICE have arrested two men aged 18 and 20 in relation to the 40-person brawl that tore Merrylands RSL apart in a wild brawl during the India v Pakistan World Cup cricket match last night - and they’ve urged the others to turn themselves in before they are caught.

The two men are in custody and police say they are likely to be charged with riot and affray.

They are examining CCTV footage and expect to be able to identify everyone involved in the melee, which saw four people taken to hospital with a range of injuries, promptly.

“We are working closely with the club,” Inspector Tamara Kirby said.

“The RSL is very good with footage.”

Inspector Kirby said she had not seen this level of violence at a cricket game viewing before.

“I think it’s disappointing that people can’t go out and have a quiet night without resorting to violence,” she said.Police would not comment if the incident was race related.

As 50,000 fans celebrated the closing stages of India’s crushing victory over their arch rivals at Adelaide Oval, up to 40 people clashed inside the Western Sydney club as they watched the action unfold on the big screen.

Club CEO Bryn Miller said every fist and chair thrown during a wild brawlwas captured by CCTV inside the club which prides itself on its multicultural harmony.

“The tensions rose as the evident winner was going to surface,” Mr Miller said.

“20 minutes beforehand there was some pushing and shoving by overexcited fans and it was calmed down.

“Pakistan hit a six and the crowd went very vocal and cheered and a person raised a chair and threw it at someone.”

Security footage from one of the club’s 200 cameras captured the offender walking “a great distance” with the chair before throwing it at an opposition fan. The blow was softened by the chair’s upholstery.

The man and his friend, neither in an identifiable team jersey, ran from the club.

“Then other people were punching and throwing other furniture,” Mr Miller said.

“It lasted about a minute but in a minute it was an unbelievably ugly scene.

“When the police came it put oil on troubled waters.”

“We believe it’s an isolated incident and the attackers were not known to each other.”

Mr Miller agreed with the assesment.

“It’s a silly place to do something like that because it’s not too hard to track people, No way they’ll ever be allowed back in.”

On a typical Sunday night he said there are only two or three people in the sports bar.

“You could shoot a gun in there,” Mr Miller said.

But before yesterday’s hotly anticipated match between the political and cricketing arch-rivals, the club had received hundreds of calls asking if they were playing the match.

“It’s no different to when the Parramatta play Penrith, State of Origin, there’s usually a bit of banter,” Mr Miller said.

“That’s why people like coming out watching sport with other people because they mightn’t be able to pay the $400 to go and watch but they certainly like being able to watch in the company of others.”

Mr Miller said the fight was not alcohol fuelled. In a separate video posted to Facebook, patrons can be seen fighting and throwing various object, including chairs, while security guards attempt to break up the wild melee.

Glasses and crockery can also be seen flying through the air, with the video ending on one patron left unconscious on the floor.

An onlooker uploaded the video with the comment

“So a plate flew past my face”.

It then begins with him commenting:

“Just when you think it’s over”.

“Oh s***, and he’s flat out. The n**** just got knocked the f*** out… That guy gone,” an onlooker can be heard saying.

In the comments section below the video he explained how he saw the fight unfold.

“So this *** *** Indian guy (n*** why ya’ll gotta ruin it for the rest of us) instigated the fight and threw a chair at a Pakistani dude who was just sitting down minding his own business,” he wrote.

“Then the two gangs got they squads to square up and this is the result. 3 people bottled. 2 people knocked out… 6 police cars on the scene and me happy and full filled (sic) as f***! Guys learn to control yourself when drunk.”

Emergency Services were called to the venue on Military Road, about 9.30pm with paramedics treating four people for non-life threatening injuries.

Not holding my breath that the Aussies will get on the park today. The A-League match last night was called off and quite a few race meetings in Queensland have been abandoned.
