Genuine question. Everyone on here is reacting as though Lawson was targeted for being a homosexual, as though there is an entire back-story here that Im missing.

Im trying to figure out if anyone on here who is outraged by the above ever actually played footy, sincerely, because being colloquially accused of homosexuality mid-game is about as inevitable as being tackled with the ball.

This is a really poor take. Calling it inevitable is excusing and tolerating the abhorrent behaviour. It's 2026 and the world has changed. If you haven't thats on you and maybe you should take your ignorance elsewhere. I'm sure 99.99% of NRL players wouldn't call it inevitable and would hate to be associated as such. Pull your head in.

So because something is “inevitable” to you then that makes it ok? It shouldn’t be changed? It shouldn’t be punished?… I welcome Kepaoa to come and join the rest of us in 2026

Joined the forum 16 years ago and this was inciting enough to warrant your fourth comment in that time?

It's the same as the red card today in the world cup for the Paraguayan player for covering his mouth while he spoke to an opponent. Very harsh penalty, but necessary to stomp it out of the game.

Don't use racial slurs, don't use homophobic slurs - set the level of punishment high enough that everyone learns not to do it. There's still plenty of things you can call an opponent in the heat of the moment.

The only "soft touch" or "soft c***s" are the people that are very upset that there is a punishment for saying this sh**
 
Slurs are about putting people down and excluding them, and Rugby League is and should be the opposite of that, for everyone who loves the game. I would love to see Kepoa make his journey back to first grade, but he needs to be better than this. He'll cop a deserved suspension, hopefully he also learns a lesson.

I fully agree with setting the punishment high.

I’d do:

First offence: 3 week suspension, verbal and written warning

Second offence: 5 week suspension, $5,000 fine and having to fully complete a course in the matter like the nrl do to people that have alcohol problems and like they do to people that have done domestic violence.

Third offence: Termination of contract

This I’ve more thought from a club perspective, I’m not really sure the punishment the Knights have or the NRL for this kind of behaviour.

Oh **** yeah!!!!! Sounds like a hoot of a Saturday night🤦‍♂️*sarcasm*. I know plenty of proud gay blokes, actually went to my neighbours wedding. They don't get offended easily because they couldn't give a rat's.

Give the Kane Evans interview a watch if you can, because that’s definitely not the case for a lot of people, especially in the NRL, I would say.

I've watched it. He wasn't a proud gay man. Now he is and won't be easily offended. If blokes in the NRL feel they need to be quiet about it that's on them, just own those feelings. If the other guys are offended or don't want to be tackled by a gay man they can do something about it by leaving the game. Humans are complicated I get that but there's been gay blokes for centuries.

Very easy to say if you don’t live it. The fact that two NRL players have ever come out tells a very different story. I’d say you have your head in the sand on this one.

It’s not really relevant what anyone’s sexuality is in this discussion, because we’re looking at the wider picture and the discrimination against gay people, and the overall effects of that.

Plenty of people will be able to take it … some people will get it constantly, particularly in super-masculine circles like rugby league, and some of those people will be affected in ways like self harm, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc.

It’s pretty basic to just avoid gay slurs in the first place … it’s really seen as a basic level of respect in 2026. The overwhelming response in this thread and the NRL’s sanctions reflect that.
