Recruitment And Retention Discussion

De Courcey articles appearing on Canberra pages this morning.
Perfect recruitment target for them.

“Tell me a little about this De Courcey? What’s he like? What position does he play? Any footage?”

“Well, he’s currently at Newcas-“

“Newcastle?!? We NEED him! Sign him up”.

Intrigues me a little, especially with Gags (all but confirmed to be) leaving. Open centre spot. Presumably Hunt front runner at the moment. But both McCarthy and De Courcey were touted as options and seems the club are pretty happy to move both on.

Implies to me that we have some better prospects coming through, and that neither have impressed enough to warrant much attention to their retention. Can’t imagine either would be commanding much $$ (or in line for a bigger pay day elsewhere).

2 year extension sounds reasonable and the prospect of locking down a centre spot should be enticing. Curious if he’s throwing his toys out of the cot for being hooked at half time vs Tigers or not getting the gig last week with Best out.

I like that we have withdrawn the offer, shows we mean business.

Others have said he is more a wing than centre. Could be cos we locked down Greg that he is now surplus to requirements. A small deal, dont want it? See ya buddy.

I think having de Courcey informally earmarked as Greg’s successor… and then Greg getting signed to a new 3 year deal tells you all you need to know.

In terms of replacing Gagai, Hunt has looked good at centre, Winter is pretty clearly looked at as our best young outside back replacement, and we know of they don’t work we can just put Sharpe there and play Sandon in the halves.

"The Newcastle Knights and Jacob Saifiti are understood to be locked in discussions over the prop's future, with the salary cap a sticking point."

Click bait and hyperbole.

Should be titled “good guy Saf puts club first” .

Wants to stay, but will leave if it’s in the clubs best interest to use his money on up and coming forwards.

Think he’s earned himself a new contract with recent performance. In the nicest possible way, I hope he isn’t being relied upon in 2 years time the way he is now.

Yeah that’s a nice way of how to say a lot of words without actually saying anything meaningful or with substance. Might as well just copy and paste what Baz said on it before

Safiti is off contract end of 2027 right, losing him and Frizz in 24 months would blow.

We'd literally have no ready to go props I think Mooney is still 3 years off his best personally.

3 years? He’s already a competent to good Prop. We definitely do not want to lose Jsaf. He will be signed this year, 2 year and option I say.

Mitch Henderson has signed for Cessnock.
I don't know if that's only for the weeks he isn't picked for the Knights, because they are still calling him a Knights player in the article.

Have seen Henderson in a couple of televised Cup games this season, competent player, has his moments but not likely a first grader, not even a 18-19 but covers a few positions for injuries in Cup but realistically would we better off if he played for Cessnock each week and if injuries occur step up a Flegg player for experience and an opportunity

I'm not real happy with the halves in Flegg, and the ones from Ball are too young. Chase Butler is still in school and only 17 I think.

Hunter has possibilities and we are ok with Gamble but not much depth so we might have Henderson for most if not all this season and hope the likes of Rosemeyer and Crosswell develop a bit for season 27
