2026 Recruitment And Retention

He says in the article the family he needs to be closest to is in Taree. You’d imagine with AOB gone (I think there was tension there) his first call would be to the Knights and seeing if that can work. From there who knows.

Would be a hell of a get to bring him back. Obviously the knee is a worry but I can't imagine it's going to ruin him given his game is all about work rate & physical first up contact, and his starting point is so high - even if he comes back at only 90% of what he was he's still probably a top 20 middle. But that + his age probably does reduce his value a touch to the point where, yeah, if this year is Dane & Tyson's last go around, you'd think we'd be able to make the money work.

You pair him with J Saf and Mooney, all of a sudden you've got great balance in your starting pack. J Saf is great off the back fence and a real bruiser defensively but doesn't have the best motor. Pairing him with Trey and Mitch should lower his work rate and allow him to be more of an impact player.

Yeah he himself says he had a lot of bad habits when he lived in Newy and the seachange to the Wahs helped him get his mentality and approach right, which is why he became the player he became over there. Feel like he'd have lessons to pass on to a guy like Cody.

If we are letting Jones go to make a spot for Barnette, that would be ideal.
Not sure if we have the $ though.
This is what I was thinking as well after hearing Barnett has asked for a release to return to Australia to be close to his family

When you hear we have told Jones he is free to leave this year and Sullivan sounds like he will be medically retired, we would definitely be looking for a middle forward for this year.

Since the Warrior’s are stacked for middles, they would probably let Barnett go this year

Just my hopeful optimism, but to me it sounds very plausible

I would love to see Barney back at the club, but he left under an injury cloud and spent most of last season out injured. He'll have another tough year of NRL under his belt by the time he's available.

If he can come back and make an impact on the field and in the sheds, then great, but if his biggest impact is in the rehab group...well, we may end up adding it to the long list of bad recruitment decisions by the Knights, which includes letting him go in the first place.

With a relatively young team, it would be good to see a leader like Barnett replace Friz in 27.

Agreed, the price would have to be right

While I expect us to take a shot, I'm sure Brisbane will too and they'll have Haas' money up their sleeve.

Seems like convenient timing with Haas leaving and suddenly Barnett needs to leave NZ on compassionate grounds. My tin foil hat says Brisbane are behind this.

You’d have to be confident we will get Barney back. And one has to wonder if it will be this season. Cos the reasons behind his move seem pretty urgent. It will all depend on what Sully thinks he is worth.

I'd be suprised if we couldn't get him for $600k for 3 years coming off a knee reconstruction and at the back end of his career. Be interesting to see what we have left.

I assume we have a full top 30 signed now?

Just a random thought Melbourne are horrifically short of outside backs, why not offer them Marzhew, Schillinger, Votano or Hunt? Would free up a spot.

Signing Barnett for this year would be great! Although there is some element of risk with his injury history. If we can get him here this year, I think a 3 year deal. 2 year with club option better. Wonder if we can back load the deal once Gags and Frizz are gone. I think 600-800k for Barnett is good business.

If Barnette and Wife are serious about being close to Taree, Newcastle is really the only team that makes sense 2hr dive approx.
NZ is a flight and a drive.
Brisbane is a flight and a drive.
Sydney is a long drive.

Hopefully just using Broncos to get a better deal. 🤞

Get it done POS, if you haven't already.
