Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Surely the Warriors wouldn’t let Healey go? He was an investment to them and they used him wisely!

Letting Davis go? No idea why they didn’t use him but the club seemed to bypass him this year for Arthur. That may change now Arthur’s not backed by AOB but think Davis was only on a Cup deal so he’s not taking up a spot. If they wanted to free up a spot they would get rid of Arthur!
Never said anything about freeing a spot up by getting rid of Davis but obviously they’d have to just like they’d have to for any hooker they go for.

For the warriors letting him go, that’s exactly what i said, they would have to be stupid to let him walk since he is such a talent, hence why I’d think of a swap with Davis to at least kinda sweeten the deal hooker for hooker, On the flip side it isn’t just a club choice many times it’s the player wanting out to actually play, im not sure if people are aware it’s not like Healey is 18 years old, in fact he is 23 at the moment, time isn’t on his side, im sure him and his manager are aware he is definitely good enough right now to play week in and out in the NRL, how long until he decides to leave to pursue that.

Wayne is 28 at the moment so let’s say he goes until he is 31-33 years old that would mean Healey would be around his middle to late 20s before he can even play regularly in first grade, if he is fine doing that well than that’s on him but not many are willing to throw their career away waiting for injury opportunities and than go back to reserve grade when they return.

Healey isn’t the only hooker I’d be monitoring, but he is the one that if for some reason he wants to leave I’d be on the phone to him within the next hour.

But you are right in the sense new ideas will come with a new coach maybe Holbrook believes Arthur is ready and uses him or finally gives Davis at least one chance.

I honestly don't believe Leo was that bad this season. I certainly wouldn't go close to saying he had a "good" year but naturally with a player that left in disappointing fashion I think there's a consistent readiness to downplay anything good he did, and overplay his deficits across the season.

There were several games where he put his body on the line for 50-70 minutes in the middle with very minimal supporting cast, and was often quite good defensively considering that lack of support. Touch unfair to say anyone making regularly making 40+ tackles at NRL-level is completely phoning it in. His running game has always been rather limited for a starting prop, so I wouldn't have expected him to be pumping out 150m+ of the best each week - that just not his style. Everyone gave up at the end of the season but that certainly isn't attributable to Leo IMO.

Is he ever going to be worth 800k? - On balance, probably not, we made the right decision not to budge at that price - I don't believe we ever got close to Leo's ceiling, he possesses a degree of skill that could definitely make up for his lack of ball-carrying talent, but this wasn't something that aligned with AOBs coaching.

Is Trey Mooney a higher-ceiling prospect long-term? - I believe so, but there's no guarantee he even makes it to Leo's level. I certainly believe he can have a breakout season but I won't bank on him dominating from Round 1.

Think we will miss Leo more than any of the others, not sure the replacements at this time are as good, might be in time, Mooney and Saulo the most likely in 2026 others may need a season, all about gaining experience but think we will be ok in 2027 as the younger guys develop

For 500k a year he’s a decent pick up. For 850k it’s a disaster. We dodged a bullet by ****ing him over in his last contract.

We’ll get the same output (minus the lengthy suspensions) for half the money with Mooney.

Listened to our post season review section on the Bloke podcast earlier. They reckon Mooney is on $500k+.

Mind you they also said that they think Sandon will start at #14 so shows how much they know.

That podcast till mid season last year used to be one of the better ones
Now they are all flogs trying to just pump themselves as so called league experts

They pretty much bagged every signing/release for our side then pumped themselves titans up on everything they are doing plus how much positivity the showed when we were equal points and it was only our complete bed **** that let titans of bottom

They don’t even know a thing about Newcastle and their team, even bagged out our junior pathways when we won Andrew John’s, grand final in Matts and whilst disappointing in flegg we put most of the kids up into Cup all year to help their development

Especially that idiot Guru who calls himself the No 1 talent spotter in juniors, should know that our pathways are developing, main problem been the coach/first grade transition/chances in previous years so hopefully Holbrook makes the right choices

Kempy called us “a team full of reserve graders” 😂. That will do me.

"Guru" I use this term loosely, he says "Bradley's walking out the door, KPP is walking out the door" no mate, do your research, KPP's money couldn't be matched so we let him go and Brailey wasn't offered a new contract due to his major injury issue... If we had paid good money for Brailey they'd be complaining about that too!
