Jesse Southwell gone!

I’ll still watch the girls, Yazzie etc give it their all every week. They deserve it. Also I kind of have the hots for Liv Higgins.

But yeah it will be hard to actually look forward to now.

I really don’t think the club could have done anything more to be appealing to a young star. Hopefully we get a few good years out of the young U19’s five-eighth/fullback we just signed before the Broncos poach her too. I suppose they’ll need a 6 in a year or two.
Exactly mate. I’d love to switch off and stuff the NRLW but we’ve got so many girls that give their all, it’s not their fault. I’ll still watch them and get behind them

Maybe next year Brisbane can take out the full top 5

Saw people saying Mato might be going to Bronx as well. I assumed Titans releasing her would only to be to go to NZ. Wtf does she need a realise to play an hour up the road?

Tamika’s speech was pretty much a Fk u Newy IMO.
I don’t know how to feel tbh. I’ve been very salty about Upton and the fanfare about her in a Broncos jersey, doesn’t sit well with me.

Irrational thoughts: We have never really heard a “thanks to Newcastle for their compassion in letting me leave for ‘personal reasons’, sometimes kindness is bigger than the game” type dribble. I don’t expect that (and it would be a blatant lie) but even her very first interview in Brisbane kit, she was all but saying, “hahaha, I’m bloody stoked to be here, so good, love Brisbane, happy to be here” which is great for your new club, not so much the one you bailed on a multi year contract.

Should we be angry at the club for not making these women feel wanted, providing other avenues for income, for quality of coaching etc. Is there something really wrong with the club?

Or are the players just making their money while they can, pooling their success at a club in hope to win comps and taking the **** getting out of their contracts for “personal reasons”. There ain’t much we can do as a club if it’s personal relationships fuelling some of these moves. But you can’t tell me we couldn’t offer similar money to Brisbane/Roosters for some players under our cap - it’s those third party deals.

Mostly, I feel sad for the young girls who looked up to Millie and CJ, Upton and the Southwell sisters playing in Red and Blue - it’s been a disappointing few years. At least we don’t have names on jerseys yet.
Clydesdale seems like the shining light in all of this.

The comp on a whole has always been a big F-U to all other clubs other than Roosters and broncos from the start, only have to look at this season when there were players that Played for Australia as starting 9 like Olivia that then got put down to 3rd in line after they appointed the Roosters head coach to NSW cinch and then half stacked the side with his own player’s

If it wants to be fully transparent and a fully fledged comp the salary cap needs too increase so they can cut the “do nothing jobs for third party money” and have each player have a set financial minimum price like in men’s game
Not sure if they do that now with the cap how it is but would make it harder if Tamika and Jessie say had to be on minimum $500k under a say new 3-4 mill cap compared to this years $1.6mill or whatever it is

Only then will it be a fair comp and the one sided Will change

We just need to find one or 2 more mobile monster forwards and a quick fullback and even without Jessie will still be alright going forward

I've had nearing zero interest in the NRLW since Tamika stabbed us in the back to run off to Brisbane.

Sadly, Tamika saw where the premierships were going, and went there. I don't buy the personal reasons.

I haven't watched a game this year as it was very clear the comp was 2 teams. Before the Knights v Brisbane Prelim I told my mother I hoped we win but we were going to get smashed.

Concentration of talent though, it's not just an issue in the NRLW. And the league is pretty powerless to prevent it.

Jesse has played her last game for the club

Caitlan, The roosters winger, Hannah, Tamika, and no doubt Jesse going will have others looking for greener pastures.

Nice gutting job in the last 2 years.

It's hard to see it changing the NRLW is years if not 10+ away from being a self sustainable comp and being able to pay liveable let alone lucrative salary, so if Roosters and Bronco's can provide these girls with great jobs outside of the footy who can blame them.

But in the fair dinkum stakes in a 1 team city like Newcastle with the mining, not to mention West groups how the heck can't we do the same?

If they are making enough money to fund it yes, if they aren't than no.

The club does employ a bunch of the players:

I’m pretty sure a couple of them do work in mining. But I’m gonna take a wild guess that a real job working on a dig site isn’t as appealing and glamorous as say the job you get given by the Roosters, where you kick a ball around with some kids for an hour or two, make a few member outreach calls, then get to go to a movie premiere or something. And that’s if you’re not one of the ones who gets handed a gig with Nine or Fox.

And then playing with those teams, way more of the squad gets to do a lot closer to a full time professional training load.

That's very disappointing to read.. I think the game still needs people to watch it but in a game that's not very large, nobody wants to watch the same 2 teams win year after year without it even being close. As a fan of the club I'll still tune in here and there but not going to lie that's really put me off..
If the donkeys gave her more money or more benefits then you can't blame her for going, I just hope the NRL step in and put something in place to even up the game going forward.
There’s something inherently ill about the Knights NRLW program with so many top line players leaving or left over its short history.
And nobody can finger POS as apparently he has nothing to do with recruitment and retention.
So who’s left at the Knights organisation who is on the nose with the best players leaving or left?
This just doesn’t happen at other clubs.

Jessie could have had a legacy similar to Joeys in the Women’s game, but instead she choose to turn her back on her own city and do incredible damage to the league by helping creating a duopoly.

Other people can try to rationalise it all they want but it’s exactly what happened clear cut.

That’s what her legacy will speak of.

That’s it’s for me, I’m done with the NRLW

Disagree, if we wait for that to happen the comp will wither and die, and in fact look a lot like it does now, where the super rich clubs are able to just stockpile all the talent they want.

If the goal is to grow the game, then it does need investment. The NRL boffins should be able to calculate potential growth, what that would mean for a TV deal, and then budget according to that (not really convinced much stuff like that happens at the NRL, though).

Sometimes you do have to invest in order to grow something. The NRL is notoriously bad at doing this. But worth asking if when rugby league kicked off back in 1908 for the men, was there money there to fund it, or did some people take a punt that gate receipts would fund what they were trying to do? That's why the game was changed from rugby, to make it more appealing to crowds and get people buying tickets. The women deserve the same faith, imo.

Although I can't really speak, having barely had time to watch a game this year, it's disappointing to see people say they're never watching the NRLW again. We still have probably the best talent pool in the game coming through. It's another setback for the Knights, but the girls still deserve every inch of our support. It's a great product. And personally I think our supporters have got in behind the women like no other club has ... would any other team's forum have anywhere near this much discussion? The ones I've looked at don't even have a subforum for it.

I'm definitely going to make the effort to tune in more next year! :)
