Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Telegraph reporting Knights as one of five clubs who have flagged interest in Dylan Brown (also Dolphins, Dragons and 2 unnamed clubs). Says he’s starting to meet with clubs next week.
I’ve thought about it & I think we probably should chase him.

I know Dylan looks way more like an out-and-out 6 right now than a 7, and we’re up to our ears in 6 prospects. And look. I love Sharpe. Linnane, Pryce & Votano are big talents. But they’re all “maybes”.

Dylan isn’t a “maybe”. He’s a proven, experienced first grade half, one of the better ones in the world right now in fact, at 24, an age when many very successful first grade halves over the years still haven’t actually cracked first grade. That’s how old Jarome Luai was in his first full year of first grade for example.

The worst case scenario a ways down the track is: we have a top 5 five-eighth in the NRL in Brown, but he’s not just not a halfback. So, we still need a 7, a bunch of those very good 6 prospects are gone, and we’re rooting around for a do-a-job 7 like Fogarty, Sexton etc. So… the same situation we’re in now, except we have the best five-eighth we’ve had at the club since Matty Johns.

It doesn’t sound that bad?

Best case scenario is that Brown’s game evolves as Luai’s has, and he becomes a very good to elite NRL #7. Happy days.

I would love to be wrong, but I can't see any chance of Brown becoming a Knight given the competition for his signature. Parra will be cashed up and keen to keep him as well. Not to mention the extra the Knights have to pay for players with other suiters to move to Newcastle. We're potentially looking at $1m a season deal. So that would mean $2.4m out of our $12m 2026 top 30 salary cap on two players.

As for Fogarty, I'd be surprised if the Raiders didn't take the option. Even with a lot of talent coming through, they're going to need Jamal's consistency and leadership.

Sexton, look if the Knights roll the dice on him it wouldn't be the worst gamble the club has taken. But otherwise, I think it's just a situation we're going to have to be patient as the club is clearly getting better at developing our own and watching POS work his magic in picking up young talented players and diamonds out of the rough.

Getting Brown would involve paying a bigger number than any other club will. Not $1 million. Over $1 million.

It would be an overpay, but it’s not as bad as $800K on Jackson Hastings, and I don’t know what we were playing hardball with Leo for if it’s not so that we are in a position to sign the best half we could possibly find.

I think there’s an argument that if he lives up to his potential, $1.2 million on Brown is better value than the same for Luai. Again, factoring in that Luai didn’t prove himself as anything more than a good #2 until he approached 30.

Yes, I was being conservative. I think we're really looking at two players on $1.2-1.4m out of our $12m top 30 salary cap.

To juggle that and build a team with an actual premiership window (because why do it otherwise) POS is going to earn every cent of his contract.

Zero Tackles says Brown is chasing $1.2mil.
He’s a mercenary. No question. I don’t love it but I’m a bit “what the **** else do we do?”

We need to convince Kalyn to stay.

We will probably need to convince a capable first grade #7 that we’re worth playing for.

I do think a player of Brown’s calibre helps with both.

Not if he just wants money. The Roosters aren’t desperate. They have a very talented young fella, Toby Rodwell who’ll probably be ready for first grade in 2027 at the latest.

Dylan Brown is a good player and if signed here would be the best 6 at the club since both Matty Johns and Mullen.

But I think he's going to ask for too much to come to Newy.

I do think KP with Brown together would be a very handy attacking combination and then would only need to sign Sexton or Fogarty to really strengthen that spine.

Maybe, but the Roosters aren't going to wait until 2027, if indeed it takes that long for Rodwell to be ready.

And in anyone’s language, Brown simply is not a $1.2 million player. That’s laughable!
Look what happened to him at Parra last year when Moses was injured.
Just laughable, and not at the Knights!

TBF, Brown was in a very poor Eels team vs Luai in the best team in the comp, and Luai “excelled” in like his fourth extended run without Cleary in the team (and hadn’t stood up like that in his previous chances) whereas Brown had never been asked to do it before, and Luai is 28 & should be in his prime vs Brown who’s 24. It’s not a clean 1:1 comparison.

Do you think Newcastle spending $1.2million, maybe more, on Dylan Brown, is good business and cap management for us?
