2024 Season

I hate the Roosters, I hate the Panthers and I hate Rugby League.
I’m getting that way myself. How would you be if knights somehow made it and lost on the back of those dodgy calls? Honestly all this technology and rules is supposed to stop all the crap in the game and it’s worse than it’s ever been by a long margin.

I renig.......seen a couple angles. When the ball looks down the other angle shows a 3-5cm gap between ball and ground.

Actually was down...........hahahahahha. Still would've lost though.

It looks like the ball is compressing against ground here but yeah the Bunker is looking at two angles at once so it’s hard to say for sure.

That phantom Coates touch when it was clearly Alamoti was an even bigger howler.

In the Bunker tonight? Penrith ref’s association Life member Grant Atkins. I’m just asking questions!

I never really saw an angle good enough to overturn the on-field decision with it. Even that tweet leaves a question in my mind as to whether it’s down or not.

Apparently people in the media have been shown Bunker angles which prove it’s a no try. Eg that video above definitely is an optical illusion - the thing hitting the ground is the white strapping on Howarth’s arm - not the ball.

Yeah doesn’t surprise me.
Jahrome Hughes was literally invisible tonight. Even when To'o went off and Garner went to centre he still wasn't demanding the ball.
He’d be very disappointed in his game. Hopefully he takes that frustration out on the Kangaroos! lol

It just goes to show the difference between the best of the best and the best of the rest. Munster looked far more threatening and wanted the contest. Hughes definitely seemed to shrink at the big moment.

Not sure the NRL deciding before the finals the ruck should be policed like it's 2016 was the best idea. Doesn't make for exciting viewing.

Few points from the game.

The ‘controversial’ storm no try. The only angle that looks like he got it down is the weird corner one. The other angles show there’s an arm underneath. Good call. Also, Howarth? Didn’t get up celebrating and claiming he’d scored a grand final try. Furthermore, I’m assuming bunker has time synced footage where they can compare angles.

The ruck was horrendous. Both teams were giving as they got, but imo it looked worse because the Storm were out on their feet and struggling to get to their feet. Both teams were renowned for their ruck slowing. Klein is also a bit of a numpty for that stuff, puts the whistle away for big games instead of trying to get on top of it.

I’m used to Fox commentary, and while 9 was a little different, god they have some cooked takes. I don’t know who ‘fatigue’ is, but he was running the ball every play.

Panthers must have called AOB during the week, they seemed pretty determined not to give paps any broken field kick returns, gagai esque smash the receiver as they catch it and only challenged the winnable balls.

Cleary running the ball so much was great. Luai and Martin were great. Edwards an absolute machine taking so many carries. His team were gassed and he took at least 2 runs in a few sets to help them out. Great team player.

Sneaky question whether Sorensen had his foot in the air when he caught the kickoff. No replays shown. Not super important but caught my attention.

Munster ‘bite’. If I’m Alamoti, I’m not leaving my hand there while it’s being bitten. They both react simultaneously. I’m not sure if Munster is THAT clever that he feigns he’s been hit in the mouth at the exact moment alamoti claims he’s been bitten. I don’t know what to make of it. Munsters reputation as a fierce competition may count against him here.

Anyway.
Happy with a panthers win. Their players stepped up. They missed Cleary for a chunk of their season and probably win the minor if he plays a few more games.
It safe to say, Cleary can’t achieve anything else at the panthers. If he really wants to be as good as Joey, he needs to come to Newcastle to win 2 premierships. Until then, Joey is king.

What Penrith have achieved is unlikely to be repeated, I’m happy for them. Gus created something very special.

The days of deriding the Riff as chocolate soldiers are long gone.

Blaize Talagi will have a full off season to try to replace Jerome Luai. The Panthers will miss the fish next year. I’m wondering if they will be able to replace his leadership and his role as a middle forward. Penrith are still going to be a tough team to beat next year.

They definitely contested some kicks when the time was right but yeah other than that it was a perfect illustration of how effective that game model is. They went back into 2021 mode for this one. Played knowing that if they give Melbourne as many chances as they get, Melbourne would win. So they barely gave them a sniff.

Penrith are definitely an aberration in this era - the good teams mostly blow you away with lightning fast attack. The Roosters, Storm, Cowboys, 2023 Broncos etc can score from anywhere, so hard to stop when they get a roll on, and they transition from defence to attack so quickly. Penrith get a roll on and… keep working over the middle. It’s very different. Through the second half Munster, Hughes and Grant were taking heaps of the play 3 and 4 runs because their forwards could hardly move anymore.

The Penrith style is more likely to be something we can replicate than the Storm/Roosters one given the kinds of players our best forwards (and forwards prospects) and backs are, and the player we’re chasing to play halfback. Punting D Saf is an important step down this path.
