TRIAL 1 - NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS V CANTERBURY BULLBOGS 21/2/2022

I can't believe Nick O'Meley got a run.
He must know someone.
Having said that, I hope Ogre's other son - AKA the Barrell on legs - is in our Flegg squad this year.

I liked the look of the running game on Tim Johansson, the rangy young prop in the second half. The young guys tackled very well in the second half. I hope that is the sign of how the club as a whole has been working on defence.

His brother went great in under 19s too - and I see they were both named in the reserve grade side.

Huth still here, for guys wondering about Ticehurst he had off season shoulder surgery. Not sure of he will move on to another club post injury. Does that say Pat achurch positive?

I assume Camroux, Mapapalangi and maybe Mitch Black are in Flegg.
Think Mapapalangi is nursing a minor injury. Would have played today. Camroux definitely in the Flegg squad. Not sure on Black yet, but a lot of competition if he is. Rugless, Kelepo, Jones and Nagliova after sg ball season is finished.

Solid 1st up effort considering its a whole new spine

Realise its just a trial but wish Kalyn would think run instead of pass

Leo Thompson looked like he could challenge for a bench spot rnd 1

Musgrove and Hoy - No Comment

When we won our second last under 16s I thought our best 2 players were Bradman Best and Max Buderus, and Buderus had a great season for Newcastle Wests last year apparently. i hope he gets a run.
If Matt Smith is the kid who played under 16s for us about 5 years ago - Will Smith's brother - son of Mal Smith, who was very close with Garth Brennan - he looks very good in the Koori knockout every year.

Good hit out. Our attack looked promising. Clune already exceeding expectations. Had no idea he was that quick. Nice to see some variety in the forwards with some offloads and that short ball from Klemmer was class. Leo Thompson looked very good too, Might be a smoky for a spot in the 17.

The fact that Ponga was fairly quiet and the attack still looked the goods is a big positive.

Impressed with the defence from the young blokes as well. Canterbury weren’t throwing a lot at them but they showed good resolve.

Shame about Hodgson and it looked like D Saf might picked up a foot or ankle injury?

I like what I saw. Cliffy and Clune were good and have obviously improved with some tweaks from A.Johns. The forwards were impressive and I didn’t hate Mann at 13, but still think he should be 17. Room for improvement, and it was only a trial, but I liked the attitude and effort of most players tonight. Ponga looked a bit unsure of his role , so they need to sort that, but generally it was a good hit out.
