Siosaia Vave

TOOHEY'S NEWS | Parramatta Eels prop Siosaia Vave is the latest potential recruitment target to meet with Knights coach Nathan Brown

He won’t generate the level of fan interest that Brisbane Broncos powerhouse Tevita Pangai Jnr has done but seasoned Parramatta prop Siosaia Vave could be a far more realistic target for the Newcastle Knights.

Little more than a week after Pangai Jnr was in town for a meeting with club officials, Vave and his partner were at Knights headquarters yesterday and held discussions with coach Nathan Brown.

We understand the club potentially has seven recruitment spots to fill for 2019 with three of those to be middle forwards.

It is not clear if the Knights have made an offer or are in the process of making one but in the same week skipper Mitchell Pearce called on the club to “beef up” the forward pack for next season, the 120 kg Vave certainly fits the bill.

At 29, Vave has played more than 100 NRL games at the Cronulla Sharks, Melbourne, Manly and Parramatta but was told earlier this week by the Eels he won’t be offered a new contract for next season after two years at the club.

He spent two seasons at the Storm in 2012 and 2013 with injury robbing him of a grandfinal ring in his first season in Melbourne.

The big negative surrounding Vave has always been his big appetite and resulting weight issues that have hampered his career but he is a big body and there is no question the Knights need some big bodies next season if they are to be seriously competitive.

If we signed him he would do a good job for 20-30mins off the bench.
If we sign better props or our younger guys step up and we have Vave playing in reserves that would be awesome and mean we have good depth in the front row.
I cant imagine he will cost much.

See this is what I feared when we didn’t want to talk to Matterson because we were holding out for a marquee prop, we’d end up with someone like Vave.

Nothing against Vave he’s a decent player but looking at what we’ve got he’d be 4th best prop at best at the club.

I could be overreacting and we might still get the marquee guys and Vave would be good depth let’s hope this is the case, but if I had to chose I’d rather have Matterson starting right edge back row and Sione and Barnett off the bench rotating with the big boys.

You might be overreacting Jaybro. I mean classic example is the Pearce signing, came out of nowhere. We have no idea what will happen between now and February. Vave definitely won’t be the end of the world, will come cheap and will add a bit of grunt and experience to our depth. Won’t be the top line forward we’re after so no need to arrive at Panic Station just yet.

not sure on Vave tbh. Would add some depth and experience, but would he improve our quality when going forward? we dont need to be wasting time on these 50/50 players tbh as we have several of those in our club already. We should be focusing on a James Graham, Sam burgess type forward who can play good minutes and an absolute work horse in both attack and defense

i dont mean them personally. Just an example, these players at their prime is what we need
At this time though who do you think we should get .
TPJ has been using us to get more out of the donkeys . Tapau doesn't want to leave Sydney , we have tried for a few others and they have stayed where they are or chose somewhere else ...So who do you propose we buy , its easy to say buy someone like this or that but there is no one like that available ATM .

true, but at the same time there isnt any point buying someone because we can. Just dont think Vave is what we after and we have similar players to him on our roster already

No point spending big money on fringe guys yes, but as long as they're on fringe money it shouldn't affect our search for marquees too badly. It would be stupidity putting all our eggs in the marquee basket & not signing anyone along the way. What happens if no one becomes available? The whole time Brown & Mooney have been here, they've still signed low money players when they had to, while waiting for marquees.

We have plenty of fringe middle forwards excluding Esee, DanS and Glasby, they are King, Saulo, JSaf as well as yet unsigned Felise and Amey but not enough 1st graders, no point in signing them if not as good as those waiting in the wings. We fall away with backup players.

Thank you! Exactly what ive been saying!

Wasn't there another Vave in the NRL, a different one to this one? Think he played for Penrith
