Official Teams Round 2 - Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

Glad to see Browny isn't being stubborn with Korbin playing backrow. I have little doubt Korbin could become a good backrower with enough gametime there but we need him more at prop right now. It balances out the squad more too when at full-strength.

NEWCASTLE coach Nathan Brown has called on fans to support the club’s youth policy, warning there is no quick fix and declaring “this is where the club is at”.

Brown blooded five rookies in his side’s opening round loss to wooden spoon favourites Gold Coast and is sticking by all of them for Saturday’s clash against South Sydney.

“There is no need for us to go chopping and changing teams,” he said.

“There are no quick fix methods. Not unless someone wants to throw a couple of million dollars in our bank account.”

Brown says his young squad needs time to develop but claimed they would not fear taking on the Bunnies.

“I know there is going to be people out there who are going to whinge and complain about us, saying you’ve got all these rookies in there,” he said.

“This is where we are at and this is where the club’s at and this is the path we are going to go down.

“It’s not going to happen overnight.

“They need to support the young kids and over the journey, the young kids we keep picking over the period of time, some will unfold and be very good first graders and one or two may not.

“But until they get to play successive games and get to watch their game and work on their game, we won’t know.

But I’m comfortable with all the young kids playing.

The Knights have lost winger Chanel Mata’utia for up to seven weeks with a grade three medial tear in his knee and decided against challenging a grade one dangerous tackle charge levelled at interchange prop Pauli Pauli that will see him miss the Souths game.

“We had a look at the incident. It was one of those ones that was probably 50/50,” Brown said.

“We deemed it best to take the early plea and move on.

It’s a short week so we’d rather focus on what we have to do for South Sydney.”

The Knights haven’t beaten Souths since 2011 and have copped some hidings at their hands in recent seasons.

But Brown says his side won’t go into the game with any fear of playing them.

“The key for us is to improve and to get our effort levels to last for longer this week and for the younger kids to understand what the process of winning a game is all about,” he said.

“As long as they keep getting better from week to week, that is the key for us.

“They will be hard to beat as all the teams are but I don’t think we should have any fear.”

It is reality, and we can all see it for what it is I hope - but it's really brave for any coach to basically come out and say from round one that we aren't going for the title this year.

Mad dog was on the radio a few days ago saying that Brown is probably on his last chance to make it as an NRL coach, which has a ring of truth about it too, which makes this an incredibly brave move from him. He is virtually shooting for the wooden spoon in the hope the young guys he uncovers will give us a shot in the future.

I dont think he is shooting for the wooden spoon at all IMO he is not aiming for anything other than improement in the side and if they improve a little bit each week we wont be wooben spooners ...

He'd be the only coach in the comp not doing everything for the win each week.
I'm happy enough with the strategy, but it's a brave move for anyone.
Even Bennett wasn't brave enough to try it, and he could have virtually done anything short of dressing the team in clown suits and he still would have been called the supercoach.

It's a hard position to be in and he can't please everyone. It's either a long term fix, or short term bandaid fix and imo he is doing great for thinking long term but doing very little for the short term. I believe brown would be happy to take the spoon again if the young guys develop, whereas I personally want to win a few games..

Thank god for Brown. Rebuilding properly is the way to go we need a complete overhaul and this is the right way to do it. A year or 2 of rebuilding properly is way better then bandaid fixing and fighting for 8 - 10 position.

I really like what Brown is doing and don't see the risk in playing young, talented and enthusiastic rookies over some older guys who appear happy to just trundle out each week! Defense is about attitude and winning is about staying in the contest and you can't do either without enthusiasm! Sure these young guys will make mistakes, but they will learn and as long as they keep trying and improving I see a brighter future for the club and its culture!

Well mate the senior guys we were using last year got the spoon.

So what do you suggest?

Once some players realize they are not an automatic selection every week they have two options:
1. Dig in and work really hard, so the coach has no other option but to select you (win/win).
2. Sulk (lose/lose).

Yes Me too..... slow and steady wins the race...I think he has changed so much already the way the club and players think about things , Fitness , showing that he means what he says is great.

1. Korbin Sims
2. BJ Leilua

Leilua showed up from pre-season out of shape and never got dropped. Stone fought tooth and nail to keep him, even after he had activated a get out clause for 2016. They didn't want to grant an early release for 2015 until it became apparent BJ was going to mail it in for the rest of the year.

Totally different situation to how Brown is operating. Tapine dropped then punted, Korbin benched, Snowden benched/dropped, Sione to come back through Cup.

But he IS doing everything he can for the win each week he's picking the players that he thinks will eventually get us a win. That's why the Saifiti's are in and why Snowden has been dropped for the second time in 70 od games I think....I would bet my bottom dollar that Brown told the board when going for the job that this is how it would be and they agreed and nothing will cost him his job.
IMO that's how it should be I reckon 2018 top four , this year he will use to see who wants to stay and who doesn't and start getting them to attack and defend as a team .Next year they will hone they're skills and 2018 they will be top 4 and will worry all the other teams.
We cant afford to buy the better players in the comp so brown is buying players that he and I think will be THE better players in a couple of years and we would,nt have to pay overs to get them here . His method will take time instead of cash....B.S.Benny tried to buy a comp because it was worth so much more money to him .... it didn't work . Browns way is so much better and smarter I think ...

Heard Tariq on the radio this morning. On what I heard he's got future in the media...very well spoken. Said being under the pump and finding out how you and others respond is great. Didn't defend Snowden 1 bit. Also when asked do players ask the coach behind closed doors why they were dropped Tariq said he'd be filthy if a player had a whine about it but asking the coach what he needs to work on is good. Pleasant change listening to a very well spoken player.
