Dane Gagai Re-Signs with Knights until 2017

Of course Dane will not go to the Broncos and had not even discussed it with Benny. Well, one would think so after his dummy spit yesterday. Bit of a different tune when he wanted Darby eh?

I agree with Insomniac. All this attention on contract negotiations is too distracting...and that's for us fans, imagine what it does to the players.

Negotiation time should be from the minute the grand final ends until the beginning of pre season and that's it.

Bloody Wayne! Wish he would just leave us be. I am still going to be hopeful that Dane makes the right decision and stays. It's a wonder Wayne hasn't made a play for Sione.

@TheDanHoward via Twitter: Honestly answer, which club is your preference for 2016 and do not reply with I'm only thinking about 2015?

DG: There is a lot that I have to take into consideration. Obviously I haven’t grown up in Newcastle but I do love it here, the team and the people. On the flip side, I have family in Queensland. An honest answer is I am working through this. My manager is helping me work through this and that is the reason we have managers, to manage this side of things while I focus on season 2015.

@jenko_seven via Twitter: How much will your family and Wayne at Brisbane weigh into your decision when considering your next contract?

DG: I have a tremendous amount of respect for Wayne, what he has done for me and how he has helped my career. In saying that, I am my own person and my decision will be based on what I want to do and how I can help my family.

So basically....we still know zip.

Basically he is leaving to go back to his family... Shame but not the end of the world I would drop him if he signs with another club we have sione ready to go and bj is too damaging to even consider replacing

I don't think he should be dropped. He has every right to sign elsewhere and shouldn't be punished for it. Sione I am sure will get plenty of game time this year and then the centre spot is his next year.

Everyone thinking mamo will be our saviour if gagai leaves I can't agree with? Apart from pure speed I don't get the hype around him, from what I did see in nsw cup on weekend he got man handled being so small

Yep and if he packs on any kg's or muscle there goes his speed.

This thing (and with stuff with DCE/Foran) highlights how bad the current negotiation processes are though. Fans have to watch players play for their team all year knowing they've chosen to go elsewhere. It just makes everything awkward for the fans for the remainder of the season.

I don't buy into that at all personally, I really couldn't give a rats if players are negotiating while playing at a club. God knows I would be in their situation and this talk of giving them a 1 month window is laughable - As if managers won't ignore it and go about as they please anyway, how on earth would they police it?

They tried to before and it was lol.

I dont think he should be dropped as long as it's still the best thing for the team for this season. After last weekend there's no way I'd drop him but if he starts playing poorly and Sione is a better option then I'd drop him. He shouldn't get luxuries like Aku and McManus get by still being first picked even if they're down on form if he's leaving.

It's a wonder Wayne hasn't made a play for Sione-

Anyone think his driven up the price of Sione and his brothers talking Sione up as the next Joey so he could drive up their price and he could have his pick of the rest of our squad and anyone else too out of spite?

He was a angry angry twisted old man when he left.

Second Gagai puts pen to paper its very easy and Sione should be straight in and Dane back to NSW cup.

The negotiating isn't my problem. It's how players are allowed to sign elsewhere in the first couple of rounds and then the fans still have to cheer them on for another 25 rounds after that knowing they chose to leave. It's awkward for everyone.

I don't get what the problem is. People change jobs all the time so do footballers and as adults you expect said person to perform professionally til they leave.

You've gotta remember it's no longer tribal anymore, these guys aren't part timers, its their job and people love playing for their club like they love working at their workplace but it doesn't go any further.

You have the odd exception like Kurt and Mullo but I guarantee you won't find anymore then 1 or 2 per club, I don't feel any animosity for a player that secures their future long term but I do hate players who p!$$ on their club or workplace like Boyd.

RE Loyalty it's dead and so it should be these guys are playing footy at a decent dollar value for 6-8 years at the most, they should be making a killing when and where ever they can.

I am loyal, loyal to the team and yeah I am sad when some players go but if they have put in for the club all the best to them, however if they are holding some guy back we are trying to sign like Sione I expect them to be in NSW cup.

Sounds like he'll stay if we chuck a tonne his way, my guess is around 500-600k. Definitely worth it, give him Gidley's cash with him going straight to fullback with Sione at centre.

I am just a bit irked because it was us that gave him a second chance, yet he goes back to the club that booted him for a minor indiscretion. Yes I know it was Wayne's idea but we still had to agree to take him on.

Love how it was written by the QLD journos who probably know as little as everyone else does.

As much as I didn't rate Hagan as I coach I am loving his work as a director/front office role.

No way should we throw crazy money at him. I'd be just as happy to put Sione at centre and Mamo in to fullback. We still have Chanel, Pat and a couple of other young guys coming through to fill the gap. Spend the money on a quality prop.

600k for Gagai??! No way. 500k absolute max...simply on the basis that he'll probably play Origin this year and that's what Aku gets. He shouldn't get more than Mullen or Scott. He's in a replaceable position too.

Fill what gap though? It isn't a collection of average players that win you games and trophies, it's the collection of special players.

I don't understand the argument which says we can sufficiently replace Gagai with 3 players of lesser ability

According to the breakdown of the current salary cap - if Gagai is one of our six best players then we can afford to pay him 600k. And if Gagai is playing FB then he Is definitely worth 600k

Get with the times guys, 600k isn't the marque payday it was 2-3 seasons ago. Tariq is on 600k...

Anyone who says Jake Mamo only offers speed obviously hasn't seen him play 20's and trials before. He just hasn't had the chance to show it in first grade yet.

And still, speed will always be his biggest asset just like some of the most exciting players in the NRL, you know if he gets a bit of space a try will be scored.

Trials, 9's and 20's are so lacking relevance it's not even worth bringing up when comparing to NRL.

Exactly Gagai, BJL and Uate are the guys that are going to bust a game open for us.

So if you aren't an NRL player by 20 you're useless?

Some players just take longer to develop than others. Give him time
