The Canberra Raiders are investigating allegations fullback Jack Wighton has been involved in a nightclub incident.

In a report published by News Corp, Wighton is alleged to have been involved in an incident in Canberra before the start of the season and the Raiders have released a statement.

"The Canberra Raiders are aware of an incident involving Jack Wighton and have been cooperating with ACT Policing on their investigation.

"The Raiders have notified the NRL Integrity unit and will be not making any further comment as the incident is an ongoing police investigation."

An NRL spokesman said ACT Policing had been looking into the matter in recent weeks but the league and the Raiders were waiting to see the outcome of that investigation before deciding whether further action was needed.

Wighton, who turned 25 in February, has started at fullback in all four of Canberra's matches this season.

He has made 121 NRL appearances for the Raiders since he made his debut in 2012.

The Raiders have had a poor start to their Telstra Premiership campaign, losing all four of their clashes, the first three were narrow defeats leading into last Saturday night's 32-16 drubbing at the hands of Manly at Lottoland.

THE immediate playing future of Canberra Raiders star Jack Wighton is under a cloud over allegations he was involved in a serious incident with up to three men at an ACT nightclub before the start of the season.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal police have studied CCTV footage and interviewed Wighton and are poised to press charges.

Wighton was out with a friend — not a footballer — when the pair allegedly became involved in an argument and then a fight with a group of four men.

An NRL spokesman confirmed the integrity unit had been alerted.

Raiders CEO Don Furner phoned integrity unit investigator Karen Murphy when the incident was alleged to have occurred.

The integrity unit is monitoring the situation and waiting to see if charges will be laid.

The 25-year-old fullback wore the green and gold for the Prime Minister’s XIII in 2015 and has played 119 NRL games for the Raiders.

The allegations have angered coach Ricky Stuart, who has mentored Wighton since he became Raiders coach in 2014.

In a statement, the club said: “The Canberra Raiders are aware of an incident involving Jack Wighton and have been cooperating with ACT Policing on their investigation.

“The Raiders have notified the NRL Integrity unit and will be not making any further comment as the incident is an ongoing police investigation.”

ACT Police are refusing to comment on the case.

“We are aware of the statement made by the Canberra Raiders today. ACT Policing cannot comment on individuals in relation to ongoing investigations.”

The Daily Telegraph is also awaiting a response from Wighton’s manager Paul Sutton.

CANBERRA Raiders fullback Jack Wighton has pleaded guilty to assault and public urination during a night out in February.

Wighton last appeared in ACT Magistrates Court in April, accused of assaulting at least four people, but he pleaded guilty on Thursday to two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Seven other charges were withdrawn.

Wighton will face court for sentencing next week.

It is unknown at this stage whether the Raiders will stand Wighton down in light of the guilty plea.

The Raiders are scheduled to take on the Broncos in Brisbane on Saturday night in their bid to keep pace with the ladder’s top eight.

Wighton’s guilty plea could not come at a worse time for the Raiders, who only last round were boosted by the return of injured hooker Josh Hodgson.

The Broncos clash looms as a must-win match for the Raiders if they are any hope of making the 2018 finals.

The Daily Telegraph has approached the Raiders for comment.

Wighton sentencing for assault set for November

Raiders fullback Jack Wighton's immediate playing future is still up in the air after his sentencing for an assault in Canberra earlier this year has been set for November.

Wighton appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday morning after last month he pleaded guilty to charges of assault and public urination from an incident in February at a Canberra nightspot.

The Canberra Times reported Wighton's lawyer applied to have the CCTV footage of the NRL star's brawl with three players suppressed from being released to the public.

Canberra's board is due to meet on Friday afternoon to discuss the incident.

The Raiders, who stood Wighton down last week after consultation with the NRL Integrity Unit, are expected to announce the club's sanctions.

He was not chosen in Canberra's 21-man squad to face the Bulldogs this Saturday night at Belmore.

Wighton will not appear in court again until November 14.

NRL pushes for stronger ban on Wighton over assault

The NRL is set to recommend a stronger suspension for Canberra fullback Jack Wighton after the Raiders handed down a six-match ban after he pleaded guilty to assault.

The Raiders announced on Monday that Wighton would impose a punishment of a six-week ban, but NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said on Thursday that the league would be expecting a stronger punishment.

"I notice Canberra have proposed a six-week ban. We've viewed the footage and in our view it will warrant a stronger action than that, and that will be a discussion we will have directly with the Canberra club over the next couple of days," Greenberg said.

"We made our feelings pretty clear to Canberra. They made a decision. Ultimately the power rests with us to come over the top if we don't think the sanction is high enough.

"I'm not foreshadowing that today. What I am foreshadowing is that there will be a discussion had with Canberra."

Raiders officials are likely to meet Greenberg next week to discuss the matter.

Greenberg said it would remain in the club's hands to initially impose a penalty for infractions and that the NRL would not be imposing their own sanctions in the first instance.

"We have always maintained that players at clubs are their employees and they set culture within their clubs," he said.

"To be frank Canberra have done a very good job of that over a long period of time, making hard decisions around players.

"On this occasion we will have a discussion with the club."

He had a fair period out of the game & wasn't let back until they were satisfied he'd done enough rehabilitation & met him to gauge his character. Wighton's done no time yet.

The NRL has suspended Canberra fullback Jack Wighton for 10 weeks and imposed a fine of $30,000 for his involvement in a pre-season incident.

Wighton, who has already been stood down by the Raiders for two weeks, will be ineligible to play until the end of Round 25.

He has pleaded guilty to five counts of assault and one of public urination and will return to the ACT Magistrates Court for sentencing in November.

The Raiders suspended him for six weeks but an NRL spokesman said video footage showed the conduct warranted a stronger penalty.

Wighton will have five days to respond to the proposed penalty.

The NRL today said the proposed penalty previously imposed on Canberra fullback Jack Wighton for his involvement in a pre-season incident will stand.

Wighton was suspended for 10 weeks and fined $30,000 after pleading guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to five counts of assault and one of public urination.

He responded to the breach notice and sought a reduction in the penalty.

A spokesman said that, after considering the response, the NRL had determined that the original proposed penalty should stand.

Canberra Raiders fullback Jack Wighton has been handed a suspended two-month jail sentence and a $3500 fine for a drunken assault at a nightclub earlier this year.

Wighton pleaded guilty in June to five counts of assault and one charge of public urination.

He was banned for 10 matches and fined $30,000 by the NRL in July.
