RUGBY League has lost a legend with Cronulla hardman and Great Britain International Cliff Watson passing away overnight after a long battle with illness.
The 78-year-old was rated one of the toughest players to ever arrive from Great Britain.
Watson joined Lions teammate Tommy Bishop at Cronulla in 1971 and his leadership of a young Sharks pack was credited for driving the club to its first grand final, against Manly in 1973.
The rugged prop-forward was fearless, attempting to single-handily lead the Sharks, in a grand final famous for its brutality.
Watson’s legacy at Cronulla has remained, highlighted by his selection in the starting front-row alongside Andrew Fifita in the Sharks Team of The Half Century in 2017.
The loss will be felt heavily by the Sharks who will pay tribute to Watson and his family, who have remained in the Sutherland Shire, prior to Saturday night’s clash with Parramatta at Shark Park.
