Unfortunately the problem with recruitment is that you can only buy what's on the market. As Joshhh said above, you pay what you think a player is worth to your club at that point in time. Sometimes you might pay overs if it's a player you really want, but generally not.
(Without delving back into the transfer market when we signed him to confirm) Hodko was probably the best available halves option at the time.
Regardless of the roster the coach had at that time to work with, they still had Mullen in the sides (dodgy hamstrings notwithstanding).
If they'd formed a consistent combination and the trophy cabinet didn't have as much timber added to it we'd probably be having a different discussion around Hodko.
