    Korbin shoulders leadership role

    Wed 5th August, 09:16AM

Instead of feeling daunted by the task of coming up against one of the biggest forward packs in the NRL, Korbin Sims takes it as a personal challenge.

It’s the type of attitude the 23-year-old attests to helping with his development.

With the Newcastle Knights bracing for a challenging clash against the Sydney Roosters at Hunter Stadium on Sunday, Sims is intent on drawing on past experiences when he’s embraced leadership responsibilities.

“That’s where I always reflect back to the Broncos (Round 11 game) where we had Doof (Dave Fa’alogo), Snowy (Kade Snowden) and Jez (Jeremy Smith) out and I was the senior member of that pack,” he said.

“If you look at it from a front rowers point of view, I took that on my shoulders and tried my hardest that day and will try to do it again this weekend.

“You have to try to muscle up against the Roosters because they will be coming out to be big and physical.

“We are facing a class side. They are a really good side this year."

According to the Fijian international, the Knights will need to maintain composure without paying too much attention to the opposition’s running success.

“Us as a forward pack, you can’t really focus on what they’ve done in the past, you just have to focus on them coming to Newcastle and trying to take our two points off us,” he said.

“If we can just move on from last week’s disappointment then we will go all right.

“That’s why it’s so important to get a win this weekend.

We have to get back in the grind of winning games and performing well for our fans.”

    Knights v Roosters preview

    Wed 05 Aug, 2015, 1:00pm

By Jack Brady, National Correspondent, NRL.com

The Danny Buderus era at the Knights began with plenty of positives last weekend, when Newcastle faced the Dragons.

That was, until half-time. Outscored 32-4 in the second half by the Red V, the Knights at least set themselves a platform to work from in the first 40 minutes for their remaining five games.

Unlike their opponents, the Roosters kept the good times rolling when they won their seventh consecutive match last Friday night against the Bulldogs.

Uncharacteristically conceding 28 points after being up 22-0, the Roosters will be looking for a more steely performance against the Knights.

A stat of note lies in the fact the Roosters have allowed just 240 points past them this season, a whole 260 points fewer than the Knights.

Though they are clea rfavourites to win, the Roosters will have to make do without Sam Moa who dislocated his wrist last round, replaced by Isaac Liu on the bench. Shaun Kenny-Dowall also replaces Brendan Elliot on the wing.

As for the home team, Tariq Sims and David Fa'alogo return in the back row and on the bench respectively.

Their inclusion means Chris Houston drops back to the bench while Joe Tapine and Lachlan Fitzgibbon return to NSW Cup in what is also Korbin Sims's 50th NRL game.

    Watch out Knights:

From their ridiculous back five including Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Blake Ferguson, to their halves Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney who lead a forward pack littered with Origin and International stars, the Knights will have to be wary of absolutely every single Rooster.

They aren't competition favourites for no reason.

    Watch out Roosters:

When these two last played – a shock Newcastle victory late on last year – it was Knights' halfback Tyrone Roberts who stood tall.

Much like last time Roberts will have to make do without Jarrod Mullen, a perfect opportunity to improve on his season tally of 25 tackle breaks and two try assists, while also showing he isn't going to give up his Knights' spot to Trent Hodkinson in 2016 without a fight.

Key Match-Up: Dane Gagai v Michael Jennings

The last time these two played one another it was Gagai who stood tall for Queensland in Origin III.

Jennings will have to tread carefully around the Knights centre, who is currently averaging 141.2 metres and 3.7 tackle breaks per game.

While the Roosters haven't been inclined to throw it to Jennings's left edge lately, it hasn't stopped the veteran from averaging very similar numbers to his upcoming opponent (99 metres, 3.5 tackle breaks per game).

The History: Played 47; Knights 19, Roosters 26, Drawn 2

Apart from their shock 16-12 victory over the Roosters in Round 20 last season, the Knights had previously failed to beat the Tricolours in their past four meetings at an average losing margin of around 19 points.

    What are the Odds:

The Roosters have been included in a stack of multis with Sportsbet punters, and there are very few people willing to back the Knights at their huge price.

Roosters 13-plus is a lock with Sportsbet customers.

    The Way We See It:

Who knows how the Roosters will bounce back from their hard-fought win over the Bulldogs last weekend.

Having played a similar game against the Cowboys in the semi finals last year, the Tricolours were a shamble against the Rabbitohs the next week – although the reigning premiers are far superior than the Knights.

Newcastle won't die wondering though, and it will be a lot closer than what popular opinion suggests.

    Roosters by eight points.

It is quite staggering how good the chooks bean counters must be to get no less then ten representative quality players under the cap compared to our one current and a couple of 'old' rep players!

It's scary to contemplate how poor the Dragons attack was until we played them, and they still put 46 on us ... and that was with us having one of our best halves of the year!

But maybe I'm overly optimistic, I see us keeping the Roosters to around 30-odd.

I hope you're right, but I think the Roosters will be out to set a new record. And they have the team to do it. :(

I'm just basing my hopes on lightning usually not striking twice (ok, three times) in a row with us conceding 40-50 points, than anything else.

The Roosters do tend to clock off against crap teams though. It'll be our only hoping of avoiding 50.

NRL Late Mail ahead of round 22: Team changes and gossip

    • TOM SANGSTER
    • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
    • AUGUST 06, 2015 3:27PM

Knights v Roosters - 4pm Sunday at Hunter Sports Stadium

    Knights:

    Expect big changes once again.

Kade Snowden (concussion) didn’t train on Thursday and is in serious doubt, with Sam Mataora on standby.

David Fa’alogo (neck) also missed training, with Joseph Tapine the likely inclusion.

Carlos Tuimavave (foot) required a needle to play last round and has been limping around Knights headquarters this week.

Coach Danny Buderus may be forced to play Tyler Randell in the halves, which would see Danny Levi added to the bench.

Akuila Uate (knee) did some light training on Thursday and is an outside chance.

    Roosters:

No changes expected, with Isaac Liu (shoulder) and Shaun Kenny-Dowall (mental health) to return.

Blake Ferguson (hand) went down in the dying moments last week, but is not in doubt.
