Halves partners ready to steer ship

    Wed 24th February, 09:41AM

With the 2016 season fast approaching, one of the first things Trent Hodkinson is looking forward to is the opportunity to work with his new halves partner, Jarrod Mullen.

Even though the pair missed out on a practice run together during the Club’s trial period, the new recruit has plenty of confidence that he and Mullen will gel come Round 1.

“I think we just have to work extra hard at training.

We’ve been combining well and been out on the training paddock as much as we can,” Hodkinson said on Tuesday.

“I have no doubts it will be fine come round one.”

While the NSW Blues half only arrived at the Club at the beginning of November, his association with Mullen stretches back further.

It’s something that’s helped the new Knights teammates understand each other’s intricacies out on the football field.

“I’ve known Jarrod beforehand anyway and we are good mates, so I’m looking forward to starting the combination,” the playmaker said.

“We spend a lot of time off the field as well which is nice. That’s only going to help.”

From all accounts, Hodkinson says the partnership has already built a strong foundation.

“I know Jarrod and I will take a little bit of time, but the pleasing thing is that on the footy field, it’s not taking as long as what I thought,” he said.

“It’s happening right away and I’m looking forward to working alongside him."

Hodkinson’s is known for his ability to take control of play and he predicts his strengths will allow Mullen to shine at five-eighth.

“It’s something I really like doing as a halfback, you like to get the hands on the footy as much as you can,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to easing a bit of pressure off Jarrod.

He’s at his best when he’s running the footy, wide of the ruck and he has a great kicking game and passing game.

“Hopefully I can complement him in that way and we work well together.”

Taia ready to take on Knights

    Wed 24 Feb, 2016, 12:01pm

By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent, NRL.com

Titans forward Zeb Taia has expressed relief that a tackle from more than two years ago on the other side of the world didn't rob him of the chance to face off against his former club Newcastle in Round 1 next weekend.

The countdown to the start of the NRL Telstra Premiership season is now under double digits but Taia was concerned that a lifting tackle on Greg Inglis in last Saturday's trial against the Rabbitohs would see him on the sideline serving a suspension when the Titans began their season.

A Grade 1 Dangerous Throw charge attracts just 93 points with an early guilty plea, meaning Taia will get to play his first game in the NRL since Round 26, 2012 against the team where he played 101 games over six seasons.

The 31-year-old admitted that his mind had gone back to a three-game suspension he served for a shoulder charge while playing for Catalans in the English Super League in 2013 and was grateful that his disciplinary record was clear upon his return to the NRL.

"I was getting myself ready to miss maybe the first two games but during the session yesterday Neil [Henry, Titans coach] came up to me and said it was only a Grade 1 and with the early guilty plea I was free to play," Taia said.

"Very stoked that I get to go up against my old club, the Newcastle Knights.

"When someone like [Inglis] is running at you you've got to put a lot of intent into the tackle.

"He's so strong up top and you see him bump off anyone in the game and I just thought that it was going to be an easy 'fake high, go low' tackle and it just ended up that all of his body weight went over the top of me.

"I was still driving in the tackle and it ended up in an awkward position.

"Just stoked that I get to play next week."

Not offered a new contract by then Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett at the end of the 2012 season, Taia said that the prospect of playing against his old team in the first game of the season excites him.

He maintains a strong affection for the club that helped him through a potentially career-ending neck injury in 2011 but said there will be something extra to play for when he makes his Titans debut at Cbus Super Stadium.

"I've got to try and control my emotions because it's a really close club who made me who I am today," Taia said.

"When I first saw the draw and that we were playing against them it put a bit of fire in the belly to get myself ready for that Round 1 game and I think I've done that now.

"I've still got a lot of good mates there in the team now and they're probably some of my closest mates.

"No hard feelings towards the club or even Wayne. Wayne was awesome to me that year.

"He taught me a lot as a football player, how to prepare off field and all the psychological things in rugby league so I learnt a lot off Wayne.

"I think it was just time to move and try something else and obviously going to Super League was a good move.

"I had three good seasons over there and had the desire to come back, Good move in the end."

I'm pretty optimistic about round one.
We didn't see much from the trial about our senior guys, but we saw some great work from Hodko and some really good signs from Randell and Feeney.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how a spine of 1 Feeney, 6 Mullo, 7 Hodko, 9 Randell, 14 Levi goes. That looks as good as any spine we have had for years.

The forward pack should aim up in a real game, and the three quarters should be OK.

The real powerhouse of the side should be the halves. For years we have been putting big chunks of our salary cap into the backs and not enough into the halves and forwards, and we finally see a side where the halves are the quality players and big earners, a forward pack that should be up to it, and backs just good enough to do the job.

Anyway - I give us a chance in any game that Mullo and Hodko start - and a big chance against the Tits.

As far as current players ??

Snowden, Mullen, McManus (Retired ??), Uate, Gagai, Rochow and I'm sure there were a few current players running around in NSW Cup/NYC at that time like K.Sims

    Pauli at home in Newcastle

    Wed 24th February, 04:32PM

The first thing that strikes you about Pauli Pauli is his sheer size.

Measuring 193cms and weighing a whopping 120 kilograms, the newly signed Newcastle Knight is a formidable addition to the Knights' pack.

In what’s a stark contrast to his immense mass, Pauli’s humble and softly spoken nature seems at odds with the strength and intensity he showed on field during Saturday’s trial match in Orange.

The former Parramatta Eel believes the match against the Canberra Raiders was a defining moment for him as it signified a new chapter in his career.

“I found it a bit bittersweet moving from another club and having my first game for the Knights. But it’s worked out for me and is good to be out there with the boys,” he told Knights TV.

“It was a good joy being out there, hopefully I can build a relationship with the boys out on the field and that will help my game.”

While head coach Nathan Brown heaped praise on the Bankstown-born forward for making a strong impression in his first contest as a Newcastle Knight, a modest Pauli admits he finds it difficult to talk about himself or his performances.

“I will let the fans decide that, I don’t really talk about myself. My actions lead by example,” he said when asked if his dominating runs during the weekend’s trial are a sign of what’s to come from him in 2016.

“It’s a good lead up to Round 1 and me trying to find a spot.

“There were good comments and a good build up which is positive for me to learn how to be better for the team.”

The 21-year-old is pleased to have already created bonds with his new teammates and says he’s begun to feel at home in Newcastle.

“I’ve settled in pretty well and the boys have made me feel comfortable. It’s been very positive and good to see the other guys try to help me fit in,” he said.

“I have moved up here, now I’m just a local here which is good.”

I don't think this'll be as easy as everyone is making it out to be but in saying that I'm going to be optimistic as I think it'll be a tight tussle. Though I have a slight feeling that Pauli will tear their forwards a new one and Hodkinson and Mullen with gel well for their first game.
