Official: Brendan Elliot leaving the Knights

That's good news for the fella, hope he goes well. 1 year sounds like a smart option especially if he has a good season and the new coach backs him. With Hayne's deal up next season that'll free up some decent salary cap space.

Disappointed to lose him, but I'm still trusting the long-term recruitment plan.

Don't think I've ever seen such hand wringing over a couple of reserve graders like Elliott and Pete.
It's not that, it's the fact that they have been let go even though we haven't bought or improved the position. Quite happy for them to go if we had better replacements, improve the team in all positions.

The thing with Elliot is what if he improved as much from this year to next as he did from last year to this ? Young enough to keep improving and played for a sniff of my 5 best f*rts. Good luck to him and like others I await the signing of a decent center.

Farewell Brendan Elliot

Fri 13th October, 12:20PM

The Club farewells Brendan Elliot, who joined the nib Newcastle Knights in 2016.

The hard working and versatile 23-year-old, who has notched up 37 NRL appearances, made his NRL debut for the Sydney Roosters in 2014.

Signed up as a Knight midway through the 2016 season, Elliot played in a range of positions but always looked at home wherever he was on the pitch.

A consummate professional both on and off the field, Elliot added 12 NRL games to his tally in 2017, as well as four tries, and also played seven Reserve Grade matches.

The Club wishes Elliot the very best for his future, as he takes up an opportunity with another NRL club.

Still have plenty of time. Doubt Brown will go into 2018 undermanned. Still a few signings to come for sure.

Don't know why Chanel fell out of favour on here.
I was surprized that he came back from injury after so long off and looked great in reserve grade.
I think it was his second game back when he scored the best try I've ever seen him score - broke a couple of tackles, stepped around a few players and out ran a noted speedster to score an individual try from nearly halfway.
We have never really heard what his injuries were, but if he is over them, he is a lot better option than Sio or Elliot on the wing.

Hopefully he gets his weight sorted in the kff season. Brown has said as much that its not his talent in question but his training and diet if he can nail that he will be on the wing all year.

He has speed and strength and he should replace sio IMO.

Nothing wrong with Sio but he doesnt have the speed wingers need these days

Talking of injuries - the first time I saw Phythian in under 20s he was playing fullback and he did some great kick returns where he looked like a skinny, young David Peachey - massive side step from a standing start and great pace as well.
He didn't really show much of that when he came back after his first knee injury, which makes me wonder if he was ever really over it. If all these operations he is having get him back to being a genuine speedster with a big step, he could easily be an Ashley Gordon style winger for us.

For one I did not like that tripping incident Billy. Something only grubs do, and now sanctioned by the NRL as worthy only of a fine.

I notice Matt Cooper isn't listed in our under 20s summer training squad. The most likely explanation for that is that he is training with the senior squad.
In the season ending stats for NYC he was;
1st in the NYC comp for support runs
4th in NYC for kick return metres
8th for all run metres
5th for number of runs
6th for tackle breaks
6th for line breaks
8th for tries scored

Not surprizing that he was 1st for support runs. The thing that is most noticeable about Cooper is that every time someone makes a break and you look around to see who is with him, it's always Coops. He must cover a million miles during a game just following the ball back and forth and waiting for someone to make a break so he can go with them.

Anyway, he is the same age and same size as Ponga, and is no doubt going to train for wing and fullback.

Some very good stats, especially Cooper, notice both Gibbs and McIntyre mentioned a couple of times, pity we lost them
Tom Starling made a few of the lists and he only played 11 games.
He was our top defender, top attacking player, and he had an incredible 14 try assists in 11 games, while technically not being a playmaker.

Come on chanel is hardly a grub, its a knee jerk reactiom no malice in it unlike Maloney who everyone wants to come on board...

Chanel is hardly a grub like maloney

I'm sure we have all been in a situation where you need to make a split second decision and your auto pilot makes the wrong choice. I haven't seen this kind of play from him in the past and i think the trip came out of sheer desperation and pressure. Not really his game.

Everyone makes mistakes.

At least he isnt out there head butting people, or intentionally taking cheap shots like Blair. Those are the grub players of the league, one reflex trip shouldn't label a player a grub.

Shoulder charges once legal, now are penalised harsher than a trip with suspensions. Yet a player who reflexes a shoulder charge, are they to be considered grubs?

A trip is a reaction, But could turn into a bad habit I reckon. I did it once after I missed a tackle, it's definitely something you don't calculate.
