Really satisfying first win but a few things need to be fixed up for game 2.
Besides the ball security issues, there were times the team got a bit sloppy around the ruck - I get the impression the plan was likely for Hannah Southwell to play bulk minutes as she's likely the best defender in the NRLW and can be trusted to keep shoring things up and doing the dirty work without needing a break, while Boyle and Johnston were given multiple short breathers to keep the petrol tank running, but Hannah getting hurt and needing to come off early upset the rotations. With 15 minutes to go in the game Ronnie had only used 5 interchanges, and Caitlan came off the field in the 25th minute and didn't come on again until the 58th. That's effectively a 45 minute-ish breather, which is a bit silly, and playing Caitlan only 38 minutes meant she only had 6 runs for 55 metres. As she routinely plays 50+ (sometimes more than 60) in the NSW Premiership, and averages about 15 runs a game, this seems like a misuse of her. Karpani played more minutes and she's never in her career been that big minute player.
In fact I'm pretty sure when Caitlan came off she'd only had two runs. Even if you planned to take her off at a specific time, I can't believe she was gassed, and she looked like she was itching to get back on when she finally did. For me the consequence was that even though we were the better side physically, we weren't as dominant as we could have been.
With Hannah out, Caitlan needs to be relied on more in the way Millie is, rather than used as an impact weapon. It's not like asking her for 10 more minutes of work saps her of that impact anyway, she's one of the premier props in the game and she's only getting better.
For me the approach needs to change so it's actually the lock who's rotated a bit more and plays shorter minutes so more energy can be spent on defence.
Props:
Boyle - 55 mins (got this right).
Johnston - 50.
Karpani - 30-35.
Predebon - 25-30.
That leaves about 45 mins to be split between Simon and Weale. I get the impression Simon's a bit of a project for them - very young & raw but looks like she has strong physical attributes. So giving her a run for 10-15 mins each week is probably fair enough while she's built up. Weale plays bulk minutes in the back row in the Qld premiership (and her stats indicate she's quite a workhorse - an average of 136m at any level of the woman's game is quite a lot
https://www.qrl.com.au/players/qrl-womens-premiership/west-brisbane-panthers-womens/makenzie-weale/) so you'd have to assume she can handle 30 mins at lock.
Managing the timing of interchanges is a tough part of being a head coach, but with Southwell out, Caitlan is the one to pick up some slack. I think ideally you want at least 2 of Boyle, Johnston and Predebon on the field at all times (probably the most fearsome yardage rotation in NRLW history right there), or at least as much as possible, but only one out of Karpani (not the biggest/strongest athlete), Simon & Weale (both very young & inexperienced).
Unless the team is up 30-0 with 20 to go, at which case ignore a lot of that and take the **** with your bench forwards as much as you like.
